Soil is a freeware space RTS game. You mine resources, you build ships, you destroy enemies, then you mine their remains for resources. Ships can be crippled by destroying their subsystems or weapon hardpoints. Your ships gain experience, making them better, and you keep them for next missions in campaign.
Soil - Menu scene / cinematic camera preview
Just testing a script for "cinematic camera" and making a "menu scene" so there isn't only a static background. (UI is removed here obviously)

I've added a thing I hate in games: "screen shake" You can choose to sides only, or rotate as well. Of course you can set multiplier from 0% to 200% (effect in video is exaggerated). I'm also trying to limit it to big explosions only.

very nice. I would like to see thinner projectiles that are smaller and more appropiate to the gun size. and perhaps tone down the lighting on the missle trails as they look like a bit like glowing snakes on the screen
I plan to reduce size of projectiles (I received same feedback recently). I originally wanted them to be more visible, especially when zoomed out. Yes, the shader for missile trails is really bright, I'll have to revisit it sometime
Did you edit this at all, or is it all the script moving the camera around. Because if that is all script it is frickn amazing.
The first shot is manually done in script, the rest are automatic. There are 5 shots that are requested by script, that is only set what to focus on and type of shot (first flyby, subsequent focus on miners, and then 3 flybys when attackers come). The rest is automatic, so "cinematic camera" button will do same thing in the future

imagine making a game that is better than homeworld 3 alone.. what are the times
and its rare someone actually trying to do something in this genre, and especially after a lot of people are unhappy with certain someone who pushed redesigns

Sorry about that, I've broke it some time ago and didn't put a lot of time into finding out what exactly happened, since nobody played multiplayer. And I also see now that I've made debugging it harder from determinism test. After next update, I'll take a look into this again.

I am stuck on the first mission where you have to kill the big enemy miner? I can beat it but I use EVERYTHING to kill it and the cargo ships, which leaves me unable to play the next mission as I am to depleted?
It is not very well communicated by game, but both of those objectives are optional. If you fail non-optional objective you usually get "defeat"/mission end immediately, if not, you can still continue to next mission. Not completing them will either result in no extra research points (in case of transports you should get some for each destroyed), or some minor consequence in later missions. (I'm also adding difficulty setting in next update if you want to complete everything)

Any plans to add assault shuttles for boarding?
Not in the near future. I would like to finish the campaign, assets, and basically finish the "1.0" version. Then possibly some co-op mode, and only then second campaign, for which I would add boarding. I already have some notes about what I'd like to do with it, but it is currently not priority
@@soil-rts - Sounds good. Look forward to seeing more progress and will definitely seek to DL soon. You know, a good option would be to have assault shuttles be used exclusively for taking control of stations where we get scripted events like a hostage rescue, grabbing intelligence, or an HVT being taken out while the players fleet engages enemy targets. I think that would add a lot of immersion to your good and give more variety in your missions. Just my thoughts. Keep up the great work.

Thank you. No idea about your second comment, google translate probably failed there :D . There are 2 factions (+2 very minor unplayable), and AI is not very bright at the moment (by AI here I mean script that plays the game, not some sophisticated learning AI)

Hello, currently I don't have any plans for mac version. The game runs fairly ok with wine on linux, so I hope it should also work on mac the same way. If there are any problems with that I can try to fix it, but I don't expect there will be native mac version

Nice game, Is this a passion project or crowd funded? Are you aiming to get it on steam, because their aren't a lot of space rts (that are good) like homeworld. But this looks pretty good
It is a hobby project. I would like to get it on steam and/or gog at some point in the future, but no idea when

Hey, this game loooookkkk reallllyyyy goooddd. I was wondering before I dl it, is there any shield or something like that? If not, no problem, the game is just "wow".
There are shields on big ships of one faction. I wanted to keep them on only few ships to not detract from the whole "destroy subsystems" thing of this game. (unless you mean something else by shield)
@@soil-rts I just wanted to know. I figured with the quality of destruction and combat, the shields must be incredibly well made. Good luck with the rest of it, I hope it breaks through at once. If I had to make a list: your game in 1st and falling frontier in 2nd if you know what I mean!

@@phungle2657 Soil is freeware and will most likely remain free. I'm not sure what do you mean by "download a virus". Files aren't signed (because that requires money and some initial paperwork), so if you download it and run it first time, windows will complain that identity of author cannot be verified (because it isn't signed). Do you have any anti-virus software that complains about some of game files?
So dose it support laptop as well?

Hello, currently I don't have plans to put game on Steam, GOG or similar stores. I'll consider it when it will be closer to being finished. My reasons are that it looks like more work than I'm currently willing to put into, and game being published for potentially years without being finished also doesn't look good :D. I understand thought that having it on Steam would make it way easier for players Google translate: (I don't speak french, I can't tell what it says :) ) Bonjour, actuellement je n'ai pas l'intention de mettre le jeu sur Steam, GOG ou des magasins similaires. J'y penserai quand il sera plus près d'être terminé. Mes raisons sont que cela ressemble à plus de travail que ce que je suis actuellement prêt à mettre, et le jeu publié pendant des années sans être terminé n'a pas l'air bien non plus :D. Je comprends que l'avoir sur Steam faciliterait la tâche des joueurs

Sorry, currently I don't plan on making native mac or linux version. I cannot really tell how much time porting would take (I think biggest task would be to just create mac project and build all the libraries... I also don't have any mac I could use this for), and there is tons of other things I have in my backlog. But I had no problems running it on linux with wine. Maybe it would be possible to also use something similar on mac. I realize it is not ideal, but it is at least something. And if there are some problems running it on wine or something similar, I'll do my best to fix that

I've tried it and it looks like starting game crashes server... I didn't test it for some time, I'll fix it in next release. Normally it should work that you create room or join existing room from lobby (preferably with someone you know, it is currently very unlikely someone will be there (even if it worked!)), when every player chooses their colors, fleet, etc. and hit "ready" button. If everybody is ready, player that created room can start the game. Normally it should start the game, now it crashes server because I haven't tested it in quite some time :D

Nice work. I always wanted to do something like this by myself and I started with the fighter moves and struggled so hard even after weeks of work that I have given up. Do you have fighters in the game? So far I don't see them and I guess the missiles are just basic steering behaviors.
I have fighters in there, they sort of look like missiles due to being tiny and leaving a trail :) . Ships, fighters and missiles all "drift" (turning is more like in space than turning in a car) and need to correct their course by pointing bit sideways. It is most visible with ships due to size (and some missiles have high fake "friction" so they don't do that so much. (you could argue that all this is bit pointless for missiles and fighters, and that is mostly true) In Soil you control fighters by giving orders to their carrier, unlike in Homeworld where you controlled them individually (I don't remember how it was in HW2)

Thanks! I'm using my own engine (if we're being generous about the word "engine"). It's a decision I've come to regret many times :D . It is good for learning, but not as good for actually finishing the game in any reasonable time. And of course I use libraries for things like physics, it's not completely from scratch
@@soil-rts Ah ok that makes sense, I've thought about doing something similar but having to write an entire physics/math library was usually the main hurdle I didn't want to get through lol. Either way that's incredibly impressive and respectable.
@@Silencer0151 If you'd decide to have a go at it, I can recommend bullet physics, and for math there probably is lot of options (I use glm, but at least some older versions I used were kind of inconsistent when it came to angles (degrees/radians) so it was bit annoying), but it probably got better Of course if you want to make a game commercial engine it is.
