I Failed My Private Pilot Check Ride
I failed my private pilot checkride on Tuesday (Nov 7), and I’ve gone through an absolute wave of negative emotions. Sadness, bitterness, resent, anger, hurt. A lot of pain. Becoming a pilot has always been my biggest dream. It’s been a few days, and it’s still fresh. I wanted to give up, I wanted to quit - I really did. It’s hard, but I won’t allow myself to give up. I just needed time to sit in these feelings and these thoughts, time to heal, and time to recoup. I’ll get back to it once we get to Tennessee!

Failed my private too in the flight. Now I’m a CFI with 8 students and I’ve never loved flying more in my life. I know the pain all too well with a failed ride like that. Thinking about aviation made me sick. Didn’t really get over it till a year later, I would think about it every single day. Going into my instrument checkride made me a nervous wreck because I didn’t want to feel the those same feelings if I failed, but I didn’t. You have a great attitude about it all. Well said about failure. You are only a failure when you give up. Keep pushing and enjoy flying!

Am I incorrect that getting one calculation wrong isn't a fail? Either DPE was fucked up or that was your final failing question

Tristan you didn't give up did you? I watched this video several months ago, I was looking forward to seeing the "I finally passed my check ride" follow-up video. Hang in there man! I'm doing my solo this weekend.

Had this DPE that would not allow me to look up anything. Could not use the FAR-AIM, ACS and or the weather legend. There was a chart symbol that I did not know and wanted to look it up on the chart legend. He wanted me to list all the items in a convective sigmet as such as size of the hail, percent precipitation, at least 3000 square miles. I only stated a couple of the items them including severe thunderstorms. I did not know the hail size of the 40 percent precipitation... He would not allow me to look it up in the FAR-AIM. I had it tab and could of looked it up in a flash. Then I got asked about thunderstorms. He asked me how lightening was created and I was not able to explain other than it was created by electricity. I was explaining what went on in the mature stage of a thunderstorm and I said rain, thunder, lightening, turbulent,up and down. This was not enough to satisfy him. I was asked on how lightening is created and I stated it was caused by a charge of electricity but that was not enough. Then he kept switching back and fourth between sigmet and airmets. At that time I became flustered, I stated airmet instead of Cigmet - got them mixed up by accident and tried to correct my self but it was to late. . He asked me about airmets, Tango Zulu and Sierra. I was explaining about Sierra, Mountain obscurations. When I said Mountain obscurations, that was not enough he wanted more on which I did not understand. Then he issued me a disapproval. Question, Do DPS's try to trip you up and go to this kind of detail and not let you look up anything in FAA approved material? I understand that somethings you should know without looking up such as VFR min, airspace, understand AGL, MSL, basic aerodynamics, and the like. This DPE has issued a Disapproval to another student pilot at my flight school the other day. His friend had a weather related flight accident some years ago. Also, The DPE had trouble with my application and appeared that he had trouble with the computer. I had to help him with my computer. Took about 1.5 hours for that. We were into the ground for about an hour. He kept the complete 1000 bucks. No credit either. He also said that his oral is about 3 hours long after the application and review of the log book process. Any tips on how to pass a PPL check-ride. Not sure if I am able to do so if the DPE's are like this. PS, I had three mock checkride orals with different CFI's all of them said I would pass. Any tricks on how to pass.

PS, I think this DPE was trying to make a quick 1000 bucks and he did not want to fly due to it being super hot outside. This DPE was not in the best of shape and is oversize at 235 lbs. So bad that I have to adjust my W & B.

I remember getting away from the home airport by myself , it was the flight where I realized that I have in fact learned a ton just to get to this point. All sorts of radio contact from Toronto Center and Cleveland Center was giving me a helmet fire but by the end of it I felt more confident. Cool flight man.

Your DPE sounds like a real prick. There’s no reason you should fail over making one little calculation mistake. I hope you pick a new DPE for your next checkride and put the DPEs name online so that other people don’t book a checkride with him.

It's always tough to do a "DoOver"! "Never Give Up, Never Surrender"! You're so very far ahead of me with only 45hr that it makes me laugh. I've gone through at least 7 different CFIs (3schools) and I'm at over 100hrs student pilot over two years. Before my check ride, I still need 2hrs more solo cross country, 3Solo landings at Towered airfield. It's been 6 months since I've passed my Knowledge exam so check ride study and practice remains. I'm not giving up either, but I would have rather used the funds elsewhere too. (Plane or Instrument training) YOU DEFINITELY shouldn't even think about stopping and knock it out of the park next check ride. You have many more years of joy ahead of you than myself given this is a retirement gift to myself that's taken twice what I expected and I still haven't completed. Ive passed every professional exam on the first attempt in my life, Engineering in Training (EIT) then Professional Engineering (PE) license for Civil Engineering. But the massive amount of information and skill development a Private Pilot must master before the Check Ride seems even more daunting than my Engineering career.

Hey Tristan, part 61 student pilot here. Sitting at 45 hours myself, check scheduled for 1/13/2024, super nervous. I’m feeling every emotion that you felt. Nothings been more frustrating during this process than being at the FBO with weather and or maintenance issues and not flying and feeling like a waste of time when I could have been home… BUT that being said, noticed you haven’t posted a video in 3 weeks, hope you’ve met a good CFI, get those trusted endorsements, and push through this and get your PPL!! I believe the stat is 80% of people don’t complete there PPL. You’re at the finish line, go get it!!! And your radio skills are 10/10 in my student pilot opinion! 😂
