      True, but others have pointed out that they enjoy putting the things together but have a hard time with cutting, so something like this would be amazing if it was cut better.

    The concept of this box is good . Unfortunately the instructions have lack of technique, which a beginners needs for a growing foundation. Videos lack of attention to detail which that is a key element for a good end a product . My opinion as a past subscriber , owner needs to take sewing classes .

    Good morning and happy Last Sew What Project Review Monday! I appreciate that you plan on giving the subscription as a whole a good think-over, with a final overall review pending. That seems like a very fair thing to do, and I look forward to seeing the video when it is ready. This looks like it would be good for a beginner to try, but for more experienced sewists it might be a little boring to make. I feel as though the finished project looks...well, unfinished. Some batting & quilting as @lizwarnke4689 suggested would help immensely, as would a border. I'm envisioning making a border out of the some of the red fabric, the same width as the strip pieces, then a second border (same width) in the background material, and finally a nice binding in the dark blue. Not only would that jazz up the front a bit, it would add some interest to the otherwise very plain back. It reminds me of a beginner's cookbook that I have ("The Can't Cook Book: Recipes for the Absolutely Terrified!" by Jessica Seinfeld): it's a good starting point, and a good way to dip your toe in the pool if you have no clue what you're doing, but the final product is definitely lacking in spices. I agree with you that the drawings rather than photos for the instructions & "this is what it will look like" picture is annoying. It seems very unprofessional, and it makes me wonder if they actually stitched one up before sending out the boxes. This is complete conjecture on my part, so take it with a grain of salt: I think that printing the instruction cards has a longer lead time than making the tutorial, so they shipped them off to the printer before actually sewing up the table runner. While it's also unprofessional to have the uneven cuts in the tutorial, you gotta admit that at least it matches the reality of what was in the box. I think the word you were looking for in regards to interfacing on the pieced section is "stablization." Hope you had a wonderful birthday! 🎂🎉 BTW, I'm going to be extremely busy starting on Wednesday *very* early in the morning until mid-morning on Monday, so I won't have time to watch any videos during that time. Didn't want you to think I'd abandoned your channel, LOL.

    • @fredmakesthings
      @fredmakesthings 3 часа назад

      What do you mean my videos are not your everything? 😁 Thank you for “stabilization” it was indeed the word I was looking for. I would think that since they started this subscription back in 2018(?), it’s older than Sewers Club, they’d have their back end production down but what you’re saying makes sense. As for the project, some batting and quilting would definitely improve the look. I bit more ironing on my part might help too. Stopping the cats from snuffling in my finished projects would help too. Anyways, I hope your busy-ness is a good one and not a bad one. It’s been crazy for me since a sick kitten literally walked into my house last week. I look forward to your next comment, whenever that happens to be 😊

  • @lizwarnke4689
    @lizwarnke4689 День назад

    I think this all would have looked better with batting and then quilted and some binding on the outside. You are right about the video. The video should be correct. Thanks for the very thorough review.

    I was looking for someone who did covers for this exact chair! I refuse to pay almost 1/2 the cost of the chair just for removable covers. Your cushions turned out great! As someone who has no sewing skills whatsoever, I would've liked to see that part of your process (ASMR anyone?), but that's okay. Keep up the awesome work!

    • @fredmakesthings
      @fredmakesthings 2 дня назад

      Thank you 😊 I wish I had the set up for ASMR, maybe if my channel grows enough I could invest in some equipment 😁 The covers themselves weren’t too difficult, especially if you don’t include the curve on the bottom cushion. It’d be labor intensive without a sewing machine, but pretty easy with one if you can sew a straight line. Feel free to email me and I can help you through the steps if need be!

    Baroo? I thought I sent in projects for June, but perhaps you didn't receive them. I'll send some later today; maybe you can have a community update in August, even if it's just one person LOL. Those temperatures are insane! Your inside temps are higher than our outside temps, and that's saying quite a bit since I can literally drive a couple hours and be in the desert. It's generally quite warm here. On the plus side (if there is one), you'll be able to add lots of that pretty orange to your quilt. Although, you might need to add another color if you hit 100F or higher. Nice simple blocks for the Symphony BOM this time around. I bet it felt good to have an easy-peasey bit of a break compared to the more complex prior months. Looks like you're in the home stretch there. It's going to be quite exciting to finally see the quilt in all its finished glory. Please get your wiring checked out by an electrician; the breakers should not be popping that easily, and the fact that your wiring is old is concerning. Teal deer version, we had similar issues that got worse over time, and after I got a jolt when Mr O flipped the breaker back on we called in an electrician. After checking out the wiring he told me I was very, very lucky that it was a mild jolt and not a fatal shock. We'd kinda like you to stick around, you know.

    • @fredmakesthings
      @fredmakesthings 6 дней назад

      You did and I completely forgot! I'm sorry. I put your email in a folder to find easier and then promptly forgot the folder existed. I've never lived in a place that felt like this too, I grew up in a semi-arid desert with temperatures as high as this but it was dry and easy to keep out of the house. Here, the humidity is what gets you. The saying "it's not the heat, it's the humidity" is so true. I have white for it it gets hotter, I also have some yellow kicking around if I don't like it. I was so happy my BOM was simple and laid out what I have, I think it's going to look pretty cool. We are very aware of what electricity can do. My husband has a PhD in Electrical Engineering and deals with high voltage power on a daily basis. We are stupid careful when it comes to house wiring. We have an electrician coming for a few things, so this was just added to the list. We had a lot of issues when we moved into the house and had him check all the rooms and outlets and such, everything had the all clear then, so that's why we think we know what the problem might be. Still, we are leaving that room alone for now. I also want to keep myself around and maybe my husband too. it took me a minute to figure out teal deer and thought it was a weird auto correct, until I sounded it out. TLDR. weird autocorrect or not, it is now my new thing. 😁

    • @susanowen1709
      @susanowen1709 6 дней назад

      @@fredmakesthings I'm glad you're being smart about the electrical. I feel a lot better for the info, thank you! Teal deer, yeah I'm not sure where I picked that one up, but I liked it so use it a *lot.* Probably Reddit or Tumblr, who knows.

    We can't have our coffee maker or toaster going at the same time as our microwave. LOL.😅We got new air conditioners that don't need as much power and they work great and don't trip out breakers anymore. The heat here in Maine has been simply unlivable. If I didn't have an air conditioned house, I'd be sick. Usually the nights are cooler and we can open windows but the humidity has been awful and we can't do that.

    • @fredmakesthings
      @fredmakesthings 6 дней назад

      I'm learning that houses are fun and that each has their own quirks. I am hoping that a more efficient air conditioner does the trick. I'm not too far from you, I live in the Hartford Connecticut area, so I understand how hot it is. I haven't been here too long, but I swear the humidity is going to kill me. I spend most of my day in my air conditioned bedroom. It is the first time in my life I have contemplated whole house air conditioning. Before this summer I was even adamantly against window air conditioners until we bought one for our room, now I understand.

    Good morning and yay! Two more members of the Unpronounceable Surname Club! "But Susan," I hear you say. "Owen is EASY!" Except that's only the last four letters; my full surname has thirteen letters and a hyphen. Also, for some reason people like to put an "S" at the end of "Owen." Oddly enough, my maiden name (the 9 letters before the hyphen) does end with an S, and people like to pretend it isn't there. Oh, well. The older I get, the more I learn that old people had it right all along. Caramels & butterscotch are delicious. Sitting on the porch on a nice day & waving at the neighbors is pleasant. Knitting, sewing, and baking are fun. Why not go out to dinner at 4pm & beat the rush? Then again, having turned 60 a few months back, perhaps I need to face the fact that I *am* an old person....nah. Not for at least another decade. My dog would go nuts over that crinkle toy, presuming he was allowed to have it (he tends to eat any toy that he can rip apart, and that looks a little fragile for a tough chewer like him). Notepad, yes please! I miss the days when real estate agents would leave notepads at the door as a way of marketing themselves. (Do you remember that, or is it another old people thing?) The one in the box is super cute with the little kitty face border & dad-worthy pun. The clips are adorable, too; they look perfect (purrrrrfect) for keeping a bag of chips closed. Or maybe glue a magnet to the back, and use them to hang reminders/shopping lists/photos on the fridge. And the slippers would be quite helpful in getting fur off the floor; not sure how they'd work on carpet, but tile or hardwood - yes, very useful. Just curious how they fit width-wise? I love the color of the shirt, but the image is a little cutesy for my taste. All in all, good box this month. They stayed on theme, everything in it is nice (yes, even the shirt; just because it isn't my style doesn't mean it's inherently bad, plus the color is quite pretty), and that was a lot of stuff in one box when you get right down to it. Using prices in my area as a guideline, I'd say the value is there. T-shirts are about $25-$30 (higher than in Connecticut, apparently, but there's a high cost of living where I live) and the slippers would be about $15. That's $40 right there. Add in the toys, the notepad, the clips, the postcard, plus all the intangibles of putting the box together (paying employees, shipping, packing materials, etc etc) and the price isn't so bad after all. Happy belated birthday to your husband, and happy early birthday to you! 🎂🎂

    • @fredmakesthings
      @fredmakesthings 6 дней назад

      My maiden name is French, it's only 8 letters but four are vowels and it messes people up. My first name is also a creative spelling of a classic name, so that's fun too. My husband's is an anglicized version of a Ukrainian name, and could be shortened to something like Owen too. He kind of wishes he had for his professional life. He finds it can be a bit embarrassing when he's being announced or presented in a large group and his name is messed up. He also has a heck of a time when travelling in Eastern Europe because his name is so easily recognized as Ukrainian and there's some issues they have with that. Everytime I pass by Werthers Originals in the store I am tempted to pick them up. My grandma always had them on her person and I can see why now. It's nice having a little treat while doing something else. I am not quite at the waving to people and eating at 4pm yet, I am not quite 41, but I am at the age of asking what are they doing on my lawn and why is everything so loud. You're not old, every decade has aged down 10 years, so you just hit 50 and i'm in my early 30s. my in-laws are in their mid 70's and are more active than I am. But that could be because I am an introvert at heart. Now to the actual box. I'm glad you found value in it. I'm sure prices in CT are higher than I think they are, especially since I haven't bought a tshirt since starting to get these boxes. I am really stuck in 2008 Canada for pricing. My real estate agent sends out fridge calendars with recipes every year, which is a nice touch. I don't remember notepads exactly but I do know we always had some kicking around. I'm going to put magnets on the clips and bring them to my sewing space to hold my various project pieces together. The slippers are 4.5 inches at their widest, which I find to be snug enough for my feet, which I would say are about average. Thanks for your thoughts in this box, it is nice to have a different perspective. I am happy with my choice to pause for a bit. I hope when I do Octobers, I will be excited for it again! Thanks for the birthday wishes and a happy belated one to you too!

    Good morning and happy Wednesday! This is a great project for sure. They did a fantastic job coordinating the fabrics & matching the thread. While there are free tutorials online for making fabric baskets, they're not as - what's the word I'm looking for? - polished, that's it. They're not as polished as this one is with the rounded shape, leather strap, gold screws, and labels. It looks like it will be sturdy, too. The awl was a good choice for the add-on notion; much easier than trying to poke holes with snips or a seam ripper. You can easily see that Sewers Club put a lot of thought into this month's box.

    • @fredmakesthings
      @fredmakesthings 13 дней назад

      I think this is what makes SC so great! It’s a simple idea but they try to elevate it and make it unique. I’m so excited for the awl too, I’m sure I’m going to find it so handy. It’s also something I haven’t seen in the box before. I’m so excited to make this one, but what else I new 😁

  • @susanowen1709
    @susanowen1709 15 дней назад

    Good morning and happy Monday! May you all have an easy day today. There are definitely issues with this month's offering. As you pointed out, it would have been better if this were a June box so that there would be time to make it before the 4th of July. I'm sure you weren't the only person who received/opened it after the holiday was over. If you pause the video at 7:13, it's very obvious that the red & white strips are shorter than the blue ones by about 3/8". Not an insurmountable flaw - the finished contrast row can be trimmed to match the length of the shortest strip before stitching it to the background - however since one of the big selling points of this $39 box is that the cutting has been done for you, they should take a little more care in doing those cuts accurately. If in fact the red & white pieces are too short (as opposed to the blue ones being too long), then the finished runner is going to be slightly narrower than it ought to be. I'm curious as to what kind of table this runner is supposed to fit. Using the "measure your table and make your runner 1/3 as wide and 12" longer" rule of thumb, we're looking at this fitting a table that is 36" wide by 24" long. It would work as a topper on a 36" x 60" table since that would leave enough space between the fabric & the table's edge to hold a place setting, but they're not advertising it as a topper. Frankly, with the amount of material in the box, I think the placemats would have been a better project choice. The patriotic theme is not my style at all (and I'm not even Canadian, although both my parents were). I do like the colors, I just don't like them as a combo. I'd much rather have the same patterns with a different color scheme; just think how nice this would look in shades of green, white, and aqua. As for their stash builder subscription, I'd bet a shiny dime that they're going to be JoAnn fat quarters (which as you know frequently go on sale for as low as $1.59), and the patterns will be ones you can find online for free. Why pay $40 for a box of random fat quarters when you can buy the exact same ones for half the price directly from JoAnn? Now there's no shame in using their fabrics - but if I'm paying high-quality prices I expect to get high-quality materials. You've already been disappointed with the project box, and I think you'd be disappointed with the stash builder, too.

    • @fredmakesthings
      @fredmakesthings 15 дней назад

      I didn’t clock the different cuts, I’ll have to take a closer look when I’m laying it out. I do think the colours don’t quite work, especially the brighter blue, but we’ll see how it comes together. I also agree about keeping the same pattern but then they might have to purchase new stock. The more I get these boxes, the more I think they are just clearing out their overstock. This my curiosity about the stash builder! It would be such a waste of money, but I’m so curious.

  • @lauraburch7315

    I guarantee it'll be Joann's fat quarters and repeats. That's one of the reasons i canceled. I check back sometimes to see if its changed because i like the concept, but it hasn't. That blue star fat quarter you got in your project box this month is the same one that was in a box from over a year ago. $39 for 10 low-med quality fat quarters is insane. ☹️

    Good morning and happy Wednesday! I literally did the Wallace & Gromit flail when I saw the thumbnail for today's video, because remember last week when I said I got a fabric that I knew you would love? You got some of it, too 😀 It is, of course, the Jungle Queen Cream/Black Tigers. Your reaction was exactly the same as mine - "Oh, a stripey print, that's ni- OMG IT'S TIGERS LOOK AT THEM IT'S TIGERS!!" I'm really happy that it was in your box, too. (All told, we received five of the same fabrics, including this one. I'm a little sorry you didn't also receive the Flora & Fun - Ostrich in colorway Thistle, but perhaps you would not be as enamored of it as I am. It's easily the most absolutely ridiculous bird print I've ever seen and I adore it completely.) It's no surprise that this is a lovely box, since it *is* Sewers Club after all. That Full Moon Lilac Floral is particularly nice (my late mother would have loved it), with the pale purple background and the not-in-your-face floral print. I'm loving the Party Time Blue Fringe, too; it looks kind of like the paper ruffles on a piñata. The Fresh Flowers in Violet is another beauty, and yes it does indeed look good with the Local Honey; it really brings out the magenta of the leaves. And do I even need to say that I love the Banyan Assorted Green? Because I do, very much. When I saw it I thought, "Oh, I got some of that one too!" but alas, I did not. Must have been in Dandelion Stitches' box because I *know* I've seen it recently. Surprisingly, it's only my second-favorite in the box; the Cream/Black Tigers easily comes in first. Speaking of the green, I disagree when you say it has nothing to pair with it in this box. Try it with the Fresh Flowers. Bright green and violet is such a stunning combination & I'm willing to bet a shiny quarter that they'd be amazing together. 50km converts to...31 miles. Egads, no wonder your feet hurt! Yes, please do share a video of your vacation; it will be fun to see all the places you went to & what you did there.

      I had to look up the ostrich fabric and I'm a bit jealous. I know I am on a bird ban but that fabric is absolutely fabulous, it's no random tiger but still pretty awesome. If anyone ever wonders if i know what I'm getting, I think my tiger response indicates that I never have any idea. I never thought to try the green with the violet, normally I would but I didn't even consider it. I think maybe because the green is so bright and the violet so soft that the contrast just didn't fit. Who knows. They made it into my sewing room but haven't been put away yet, so I'll pair them and see if I like it. I've subscribed to Dandelion Stitches but haven't really had a chance to watch her videos, now that I have some downtime, I think I'll check a few out. As for walking, my feel a lot better but my phone is confused as to why it doesn't seem to be going anywhere anymore😁

    Good morning and happy Wednesday! You're at 666 subscribers at the moment; the perfect number LOL Lordy, I forgot how gorgeous those fabrics are. And you've got some decent-sized scrap pieces left, too, for all your "going rogue" and fussy cutting. Looking forward to seeing what you do with them later on, presuming you decide to share that with us. 30C = 86F; 39C = 102.2F so yeah, it's gonna be hot as heck for you. We've been having temps in the 25C - 27C (77F - 82F) range and that's been miserable enough. Be sure to drink more water than you think you need, and maybe throw a couple Gatorades in there as well. Love, love, LOVE how the bag turned out. It's the perfect grab-and-go size, the faux leather looks so good with the turquoise-y fabrics, and I still can't get over how perfectly that zipper goes with the green of the leaves. Fussy cutting really paid off for you on this one; having the little squirrel and all those non-decapitated birds is just so satisfying to see, ya know? The matching strap is a nice touch, too. While there is one itty bitty tweak I would have done (adding tabs to the top zipper), it's really overall a fantastic project. (And what do you *mean* green is not really your favorite color on the planet, I am sorry but I cannot.) It's no surprise that Sewers Club reached out to you with advice on your May project video; their customer service is top-notch. Still, it was incredibly kind of them to have done so, and by putting it in the comments it may help other subscribers as well. EDIT - I deleted the original last paragraph for this one: my Stash Builder just arrived a few minutes ago, and I'm looking forward to Wednesday so I can see if we got any of the same ones. It's in the new craft mailer rather than the pretty box, and surprisingly I'm happy about that. True, it's just plain cardboard, and I can absolutely live with that because it's a little bit larger than their old box which means the fat quarters fit inside it better. As usual I love every piece of fabric that's in it (there's one that's a repeat from the December box, and I'm super stoked about that because I already used up the first one in a project and was wishing I had more of it), and there's one in particular that I hope you get because I think you will really like it.

    Good morning, and happy Monday! Hope you had as good a weekend as I did. Overall, I think this might be their best project yet. There are a couple things I would tweak out of personal preference (deeper cut-outs for the boxed corners, different color zipper, adding zipper tabs and maybe a summery charm to the zipper pull) but generally speaking this is a really nice bag. Having the option of adding a pocket is a plus, and like you I wish they'd included the materials for that option. The water-resistant lining is an excellent choice. Even if you don't put a wet bathing suit inside it, it's perfect for keeping things dry at the beach or pool. And as I mentioned in my comment on the unboxing, I adore the fabrics. It's still a little pricey for what you get, however I'd be much more willing to overlook that if all the projects were this nice.

    First off that teal/purple/blue color combo is to die for. It's so gorgeous that I had to point out how gorgeous it is before I can even say good morning. So. Good morning! (Ha! I just hit the 1 minute 52 second mark, and apparently you were too excited to say good morning first, too LOL). "It's currently 33 degrees..." Me: God, that's cold!! "Celcius" Me: God, that's hot!! While I'm sorry you're going to be broiling the next few days, it does mean more of that lovely orange in the quilt so hey, silver lining? (Digression: Mr O just said they're getting snow in Montana??? In JUNE, that is crazy. End digression.) The quilt is getting more & more beautiful every month, and it's such fun to see the progress on it as time goes by. Question: How did you calculate the amount of fabric to buy for each temperature range, and are there any colors that you think you bought too much or not enough of? Soooo, my projects. The dog blanket is still in timeout for bad behavior; I'll need to get back on it soon before it stops being a WIP and turns into a permanent UFO. In the meantime, I've been making a whole bunch of scrappy QAYG blocks & strips. No clue what I'll do with them when they are finished (although I did make a boxy bag with one really big scrappy rectangle), however Mt Scrapmore really needs to be eroded a bit & this was a good way to do it. I'm stitching them to cut-up pages from a magazine I was planning on throwing out anyway, so at least the paper is being put to good use before it eventually hits the trash can. I can make two 5" squares and one 3" x 10-1/2" strip from each page of the magazine, so I should have quite a few blocks and a much smaller scrap pile in the end. One thing I did learn is that I need to buy more bright fabrics; never realized before how many dark colors I tend to use.

      I love those colours together, I always have, now I am considering seeing if I can order more of that fabric. It is so beautiful and i'm nearly out of layer cake squares! All of us are sprawled out on the various open floor in the house. I think the only happy cat is Berlioz. He's in the basement with a dedicated fan. The other cats can join him, but I'm up and about so they need to be too 🤣 I say, put the thing you've lost interest in away and come back to it when you're ready for it. I have a quilt top that needs finishing, a half finished embroidery project, several half finished paintings and drawings, a stack of mini cross stitch projects, an untold number of resin projects waiting on finishing touches and a half painted house, and all I want to do is continue with crochet. There's a beam in my kitchen that has been waiting for a gradient since I moved in almost three years ago, I vow it will be finished before my inlaws come for Christmas.

    Good morning and happy Friday! Um, Monday.... (Good grief, that's the second time today I've put Friday instead of Monday.) Hope everyone had a great weekend. Lots of goodies in this month's box, although I must say that when you showed the parrot cat toy I thought, "Wow, even the cat box lady is sending Fred birds!" At least it isn't grey, LOL. The vintage cat artwork on the card, towel, and wine cups is right up my alley (as is the green of the towel, no surprise there). The color palette is fantastic, too. And then you get to the t-shirt...sigh. It doesn't really fit the theme/style of all the other items, and the artwork is not my style at all. The cats look like stuffed toys; why didn't they stick with the vintage style, or at the very least a more realistic cat? And why the weird blue/teal instead of a color picked from the palette of all the other items? Just a very odd choice overall to go with this particular box. All in all, while I like most of the items in the box, I have to say I don't think it's very impressive for the price. The towel does not look like it's very high quality, the cat toys could easily be bought for a couple bucks at the dollar store or bargain bin of a pet shop, and while I do like the wine glasses rather a lot, let's face it, when you get right down to it they're just plastic cups.

That little bit of faux suede just takes it up a notch, and those cunning little bird zipper pulls are simply ::chef's kiss:: And the fabrics! Absolutely gorgeous. The pinkish-orange of the birds looks like a sunset reflecting off their feathers against a twilight sky. They did a great job with the coordinating thread and zipper, too. It looks like everything you need is in the box, including the fleece so that's a plus for sure. I'm glad this and the Sew What boxes seem to have pulled you out of your slump :-) It's a shame that SC is switching to mailers rather than boxes. I love the thought they put into all the details. It’s never just random zipper and somewhat coordinated colours. You can tell everything is intentional and even when I’m not a fan of colours or patterns, I can always understand where they are coming from. This is a pretty simple bag, but I agree, the faux leather changes it up. I am hoping I do eventually stop getting birds though 😂 it’s like I spoke something into the world and the fates took me literally. These boxes and the looming deadline of converting my sewing space over to a guest space helped pull me out of my slump, so let’s hope I manage to get it all done by next Friday! I like the boxes too, but my millennial heart could not just recycle them for years, so I may have a surplus and shifting to a mailer could help me overcome my hoarder tendencies.

Need more coffee!) bag is a good one, although I'd really love to have seen a photo of it rather than just the sketch. Even if one doesn't use it for a wet swimsuit, it would be handy for carrying anything that might spill/leak without having to worry about stained fabric. But the dark grey zipper - well, that was certainly a choice. Who knows, maybe it looks better than we think it will, but without a photo to confirm that - yeah, I'm with you; if it were my project, I'd head to the fabric shop & pick out a more suitable color such as teal, orange, cream, or maybe even a green to bring out the leaves. Oh! You are a TEASE with the Sewers Club box! I actually already know what the project is - Dandelion Stitches opened hers last week - however I'm curious to see your reaction, and if you received the same fabrics for it as she did. It’s a pretty cool little project and also doesn’t have any binding. I hope you enjoy making it!

    Such fun fabrics! It's a very cheerful table runner, and a great stashbuster to boot.

      That’s a great way to look at it! It definitely was a great stash buster and I think the pattern is so pretty.

    Can you do it by hand I don’t use a sewing machine

      I think this specific project could be hand sewn quite easily but you might find some of the other projects to be a bit more difficult and time consuming.
