So, I wanted to make this video to tell you 5 reasons to be grateful to be in residency. Let me know in the comments why you are grateful to be in residency or medical school! As always, thanks for the support (Subscribe...

Glad it was helpful!
I wish I had this advice in college! Would have made my journey much easier! Keep up the great videos!
Thank you! Will do!
Can you give the link to Divine podcast?
Is there a doctor and nursing shortage? I rejected the medical field because I was forced to go to certain patients house via my parents. I also am not too big of a fan or those majors, but I do enjoy biology here and there.
Depends where you live but I would say most likely yes. There are many underserved areas in need of doctors and nurses.
Maybe this falls under helping people, but I enjoy caring for people. I teach kids at my church and I enjoy helping them grow and develop, and want to be able to help parents raise healthy children. Even though the kids I teach are very little, I know that what we teach them now and how we treat them effects them. That's why I want to be a pediatrician.
That’s amazing!
Good luck ruling out optic neuritis all the time😂
😂
I’m also in residency, also grateful!
Awesome 😎
I agree to an extent. I think for certain specialties it does matter more. I know someone who matched IM at a smaller community program, and wasn’t able to match GI fellowship even after two chief years. They ended up becoming a hospitalist and wasted two years of attending salary.
True. Some programs may set you up better for fellowship.
Hii Nick Do You think that my score in Neurology when I was student could be important???
Hi! Thanks for watching! Scores can always help if they are good. If they are not so good I think showing how you have improved is key. For neurology in particular if it’s a field you are interested in, the most important thing is to show interest! Letting people know that this is a field you want to go into
@@drnickbella thank you so much for your answer and for always share information extremely important for us to help us! God Bless You!!
Of course. Thanks for the support!
I'm a pre-med student who's 7 years older than my classmates and I'm constantly battling with the thoughts that I'm too old to do well or I should pick an easier job and work full-time. I'm very keen on doing medicine and being a physician, I'm just struggling with the feeling of being alone or imposter syndrome.
I understand how that could be difficult. I know many people who went to med school later on in life and doing well. Imposter syndrome will always be there even in residency and as an attending! Keep doing what you feel called to do!
@@drnickbella Thank you for the support :)
What a lovely video ❤ Have you heard about the Catholic Medical Association? My nephew's fiancée is very catholic and she mentioned it during a conversation. My nephew was baptized as catholic and he was not practicing that much but their relationship has reignited his faith, they go to mass together whenever possible. Both are in med school in the US and are going into their fourth year. They will be applying to residency as a couple and I believe they will be successful because they are amongst the top students in their class. And most important of all, The Lord is good and He will bless them because they have been working extremely hard. May the Perpetual Light of our Lord Jesus Christ, Doctor of doctors, always shine upon you 🙏 Greetings from Quebec City, Canada 🇨🇦
Thank you for the kind comment :) I am sure they will do well and get great residencies! I have heard of CMA! It’s a great organization. Thank you for watching ✝️
The Lord will give you strength. Relying on your strenght can drain and burn you out. The Lord gave me strenght yesterday and it was nice. Also cast your cares. When I'm stressed and anxious, I now want to cast and just give it to the Lord so someone smarter and more capable then myself is working on it. Your admirable and working hard. Let the Lord carry some of the weight. ❤
If things go according to plan, I'll be entering med school next year and honestly the residency part is what scares me the most, everyone talks about the ugly an hard parts of this stage but I love that you were able to still find things to be grateful for. Thank you for this video and loved the optimistic approach.
Thank you for watching! There are ugly parts but that’s with everything in life. I can say I have witnessed beautiful moments in residency. Working as a physician is a great career and even though it is hard I do not regret it. I wish you the best of luck on your journey! Thank you for sharing your thoughts
@@drnickbella Love it, at the end it is all about having a positive impact on people's lives and everyone who has the opportunity to have that effect on someone should be grateful for it.
So true
You think I could shadow u this summer? I’m debating between neuro and IM right now before Match next year
Always open to people observing but unfortunately I am still in residency so my program has rules about shadowing. I would recommend contacting any local neurologist about shadowing. Most would be excited to help out!
thanks for the advice
No problem. Good luck in the match next year
I love ur videos Dr Nick. I am an IMG applying to neuro next cycle. Can u please make a video on behavioural neurology and neuro psychiatry next? 🙏
Thanks for the support 😎 that’s a good one! Good luck and you chose the best speciality !
Hi I wanted to ask, many in medical school praise anki because it enforces active recall (asking and testing whether a student knows the answer). I realized while auditory listening is much more efficient, did you listen to content over and over again or did you answer questions in a similar way as anki but with auditory format (ie a podcast that asks questions with answers)? If not, what did you find worked best with using the listening method instead? Did it enforce and solidify content despite not being a flashcard? I know questions are meant for that however, I still see many people use active recall in other ways in addition to questions for information to stick long term. Would love if you could provide a thorough response on how your method worked for you.
Hey thanks for the comment. I mainly used divine intervention podcasts. I think he does a good job promoting active recall by intertwining different subjects into one podcast. I also would listen to things on repeat to promote learning. I would do questions on question banks on the specific topic I was focused on which would also promote recall. I wish anki worked for me. I tried so many times but I think the most important thing is honestly to stop trying one method if it’s not working for you and to find the method that works.
@@drnickbella that’s awesome that you found what works for you! Do you still use the same tactics to study in residency? when listening multiple times, did you go back and listen based on proven learning curves (1 day, 3 day, 7 day etc)? Are you only an auditory learner or did you feel like looking at sketches, images or diagrams led you to retain similarly?
I do use some auditory learning. It is easier to study while doing household chores, working out, or driving. Since the main limit on residency is time listening to podcasts to learn has been helpful. I do not use proven learning curves as residency makes it difficult to do that. I just listen to what I can when I can.
As always great video
I appreciate that!
As a Catholic pre-medical student this is super inspiring! Thanks brother, God bless!
😎 you got this. See you on the wards!
I'm Muslim, but I relate to this video. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and tips!
Thank you for watching! I know we can relate in many ways 🙏
I’m glad you are part of the household of Christ. I’m still waiting for your response though on one of your shorts I commented on.
Thanks for watching! I just commented on it
Great doctor and amazing vidios Thanks 😊
😎
How do you mean bro?
Are you referring to offering up study as prayer?
@@drnickbella Yes bro
There is a quote from St. Josemaria Escriva . “An hour of study, for a modern apostle, is an hour of prayer.” I view it in two ways. 1. When we study we are becoming the best version of ourselves that God wants for us; to help others with our knowledge/talents. 2. When I do something difficult which is studying, I use the sacrifice of the task as a prayer. Letting God know I am doing this on behalf of someone else. To me this shows our sacrifice for the other and can be a powerful way to show our love.
@@drnickbella wow. This is so true and amazing. Thank you for sharing!
Ever notice the bible has medical wisdom human's couldn't have had when it was written Fruits and their seeds as food fights cancer The way Jews circumcise their children is at a point where the baby's immune system is particularly strong and keeps their pp clean with less effort waking before the sun each day can help with mental health and more just saying
It's a great field! I feel like as neurologists we can do more justice to it than IM. Also with all the cool gepants and monoclonal antibodies, I feel like it's right up there in terms of good patient satisfaction and good lifestyle for us.
Agreed 😎
I'm glad you made your residency program better! Toxic people can ruin the experience!
We stay away from toxic
I love sports and neurology! This is such a great specialty

Thank you! More to come :)
Fellow Christian medical Egyptian student . 4th year struggling but God is with me un every exam but studying for long hours is something I'm failing to do
You can do it! Take it one day, one hour, one moment at a time
are they teaching you QI in med school/residency? if so, what are their backgrounds (MD, MD/MBA etc.)? thanks
Yes. I have been involved in a QI project while in residency. You just need to find a mentor
@@drnickbella thanks! in your experience, do oyu know if med schools like applicants having QI experience in healthcare before medschool? like i really love QI in medicine/clinical research so will talking about this in my app extensively be ok? bc ppl have told me its not related to why medicine? any advice is appreciated!
I can’t speak for all programs in particular but I know my program values QI. I would imagine all programs should value it as this is the only way we will make positive changes to healthcare! I think it shows leadership
Fellow Catholic doctor here starting pgy2 this July in nuclear medicine-cannot agree more that the morning offering is crucial before getting lost in the day. I love to see fellow Catholic men keeping the faith and becoming doctors-Ill say a prayer for you and hope the best in your neurology practice
Thank you I really appreciate it. Will be sending prayers your way as well!
great vid❤❤
Thank you!!

I have not taken that exam so cannot exactly say! However I believe Botha qbank offer free trials so would give that a shot and see what you like better!
Thank you for making this!🙏🏾🙏🏾

Dr. Bella-what is your opinion of chiropractic neurologists (aka functional neurologists)? Is their training evidence-based, evidence-informed or evidence-free? 🥼🩺
Not too familiar with chiropractic neurologists. I would say if anyone goes to an accredited institution and uses evidence based principles there can be a role for them in a patients care. However, I guess it depends on the disease state being treated.
@@drnickbella Oh OK. Thank you.
