Helluva Boss Has A Helluva Problem
Helluva Boss is one of the premier Indie Shows, that has helped shape the perception of Indie Animation on the internet. I just wished the dads in the show did a better job of shaping their kids into functional adults. I uh, also think Hazbin Hotel will be of similar quality to Helluva Boss, for the reasons I talk about here. A video review/critique/analysis THING!!

    8:12 I understand how you can have grievances with a perceived lack of character growth, but you also have to Understand that even multifaceted characters can have a baseline. Just because say, you lose your watch or broke up with your girlfriend doesn't particularly mean that every moment of your waking life will be forever changed. Every experience isn't going to immediately cause some life altering event where you become an entirely different person. That's disengious. Heck before Chaz (who is only theoretically alive for one episode) we didn't even know that Millie had a bad ex, and their dynamic was obviously played for a joke. Not everyone incident/statement/event should spark such a drastic change. That's not how people work, not how you should handle pacing, and not how you retain a long term audience.

    At first, I was a bit apprehensive to your critique because I was thinking "If you categorize them in such broad vague ways of course they're all going to look the same. Without the details and little intricacies of course they're similar." But then I thought a bit about how uninteresting it is that when stripped of the deeper details they're all basically the same. It's like, "this one's scarlet" " this one's vermilion" "this one is crimson" and it goes on but who gives a fuck, they're all still just RED slightly warmer slightly cooler but still RED. Similar character motivations not much nuance. I know they're all supposed to be like working within the themes of the show, but I can think of so many ways to have characters be different while maintaining the themes of the work. Just give me some blue to work with guys come on

    I think one good reason as to why the writers don't generally have as much liking towards characters is because this show is solely focused on Blitzo. Yes, he won't have an episode dedicated to just himself from time to time, but they put in all the attention on Blitzo that they don't really know, nor care enough to handle the other characters. Some effort and thought put into these characters could actually make a big difference and give us a show with juicy character personalities. But for now, every character is just built off of Blitzo's relationship/daddy issues. Which sucks.

    I am the onlyone who thinks that having Millie like its weird racist mother figure for Loona is loke a gold mine for jokes and drama?. I mean, as far as we know, hellhounds are treated almost like dogs, or slaves, the bottom of the social structure. So, Millie have been raised on a farm and probably not having any interactions with amother of its kind and also probably having a conservative education, it SHOULD treat Loona like an actual animal that piss on the rugs every time she says something bad to Moxxie or to Blitz. I can see an episode of her actually spraying water to Loona scraming "Bad gurl!", only to Loona sometime later ACTUALLY piss on the floor right in front of Millie. To end up building up this hate relashionship in a fight were Loona is really hurt, like, near death hurt, and Millie carrying her to a pets hospital and finaly talk to each other like normal people. Something like Loona:... Why (inhale), you treat me like a dog? Millie: Because you are a bad girl, thats it. Loona: No, i mean... why you try to... dicipline me, and then save me...?. Am a bad girl, right?. Bad girls just... just don't... (tries to move to not see Millie face but she can't, the pain is too much), forget it. Millie: **Puts a hand on Loona shoulder** Even the worst dogs deserve the chance to live a good life, ah know ah was very, VERY strict, but a just want you to act. Good, you know?, all the time you punch Blitz?, all the time you treat bad Moxxie?, moving around like you were in a hotel and everyone had to act like you were some kind of queen?. Loona: Pft, like if they care about me... Millie: Blitz CARES about you!. Loona: Yeah, right, thats why he treats me like hes pet "CoMe heRE LoOnENy!, gOoD jOB lOoNEny!, tRIEs tHis LooNEY!, IT'S JUST!. Millie: **Stares trying to process what Loona it's saying** Loona: You would'nt understand, hellhound things. Millie: **Gives Loona a rubber bone** Loona: See?, that what i am talking about, no matter how nice they talk to me, no matter how hard i punch them, no matter what i do, EVERY SINGLE ONE PERSON I MET, JUST SEE ME LIKE AN ANIMAL!. **She treis to not cry** Millie thinks: So thats why she is always like this... she expects a diferent reaction. Millie: I don't know what you go throught, but what i know is that Blitz loves you more than anything else, he surely will sell I.M.P. if that helps you on any way. I know he is not perfrct, maybe it's not even the father you deserve. But he is trying to come close to you. And THAT, is more important than you think. Just let that enter on your head, and if you feel not being listened, or angry, mash that bone as hard as oyu can, i hope that helps you. Loona: **Sniff**, thanks... shortie. Millie: Your welcome muddy. (Millie goes away the clinical room.) Aaaand scene!, i think its pretty solid, and even conects with what Loonasay to Octavia, and it gives Loona a more deep desire, its not just family issues, or daddy issues, more like SOCIETY ISSUES, she believes that every one is potencialy someone who will hurt her, but hates even more people that treat her nice, because in her head is "Oh, they don't see me as a person, just the hellhound". So she close herself by the idea that the other people that can understand her, and that could be someone is around another hellhounds. Like Vortex, and also this scene shows that Millie even how bad she can treat Looma sometimes is for a good reason, and even try to let her racist view on her, to transform into this mother figure i talk before. I don't know you, but i'd PAY for watch that on an episode. I would even write a fanfic. (But i don't have the energy, at least not right know). So, what do you think, do you like it?, what other interactions or relatioships do you have in mind betwen the character?. For example, how would be an episode of Moxxie and Loona, or Octavia and Octavia?, or the agents and Atriker?, and so on, and on.

    I feel like Moxxie should have been a more wholesome character from a healthy family. Hear me out: - He already is a character with morals. That made him one of the most promising characters in Episode 1 -- he is literally an assassin and yet he is so terribly conflicted about killing a mother in front of her children, he makes his boss miss his shot. He is willing to jeopardize their entire job and not get paid because of his own idea of right and wrong. He is appalled at the murder family and calls them monsters - even though Hell is full of people like that family and it’s considered normal. He is happily married and loyal to his wife (and if the incident at Asmodeus club is anything to go by, public demonstration of loyalty, pure love, and devotion is mocked and ridiculed). He always tries to be the voice of reason and civility. I liked that about him because it made him contrast so well with Blitzo and many, many other denizens of Hell. It was interesting to observe him and see his response to different situations. - His entire “LGBTQ son of a homophobic mafioso boss” plot is kinda redundant if we remember that Angel Dust is already a gangster from a crime mob, is openly gay, and has a less-than-stellar relationship with his family (he renounced them in Hell, IIRC). That entire conflict with the father using slurs and openly despising his son for his orientation should have been Angel Dust’s (if Vivzie even bothers to remember how she planned Angel Dust initially) -- because they actually used to be humans and his dad could have easily brought all his cruelty, prejudice and mob attitude with him to the afterlife (and the idea of Angel Dust not being free from his abusive parent despising him for who he is even after death is very painful). It makes no sense for imps to copy gangsters to such an extent since they are Hellborn. They have never been humans. They only copy human stuff they find cool and they supposedly shouldn’t have the same issues about orientation and other stuff because their society has been developing differently from human society and same-sex relationships have never been a taboo. - Moxxie could have benefited more from having a much simpler background. For instance, his parents were a happy and healthy couple, who loved each other dearly. They worked simple jobs but practiced self-defense because of how expendable imps were in Hell -- and they taught Moxxie well. He grew up with a fond idea of what a relationship and family should be like and was generally well-adjusted without thinking he ever had to prove anything to anyone. But then something bad happened to one of his parents -- maybe they got caught in a crossfire during the power struggle between Overlords, which left him as a provider for his remaining parent and very angry at Sinners. As a result, he resolved to work only for Hellborn-run businesses, which led him to Blitzo. He is conflicted about what they are doing for both practical (he doesn’t want more Sinners coming to Hell and fueling Overlords) and emotional (he feels bad for some of the humans they have to assassinate because he can sympathize with their struggles) reasons, but this is the only steady job he can get and he can’t help caring for the well-being of his team, including his boss. He is a bit intimidated by Blitzo, his roughness, and the way he treats him, but he still sees that Blitzo is putting up a facade and is quite a sad person underneath it all, so he sticks around. - In turn, Millie with her violent streak makes a lot of sense as a character from a troubled background. She could have been born in a very toxic environment, growing up to believe that if she isn’t strong and on her guard all the time, Hell will chew her up and spit her out. She got used to resorting to violence to make her point. She had partners who always ended up ditching her or betraying her (Striker could have been such a partner, the one she almost fell for and got painfully burned by). And then she meets Moxxie -- who is that super polite and soft-spoken guy -- and thinks that he is either a good liar or a weakling. She doesn’t trust his nice gestures, she is wary around him. She expects him to leave her to save his own ass on the job. But then he doesn’t -- he gets her out of danger while being an absolute badass about it. And when she asks him why, he responds “Because I promised, didn’t I?”. And the ice thaws as Millie realizes that Moxxie means everything he says and he doesn’t need to act tough to back it up. She ends up spending more time with him, enjoying less aggressive and combat-related activities and reveling in the fact that Moxxie accepts all of her -- when she is dangerous and gun-toting and when she is dorky, silly, and goofy. If she ever stops doing the only thing (she thinks) she is good at (fighting) he will still be there, confident about her and her abilities. This is why she loves him so much. - Blitzo’s dynamic with Moxxie would have also made more sense, because it would have made Moxxie an anti-Blitzo. He is everything Blitzo isn’t -- his father isn’t a POS, he had a good childhood, he is liked by everyone he meets. Not only he got Millie to like him -- he actually married the woman. The guy is a freak! And the worst thing is, Moxxie made Blitzo feel envious and bad about himself -- and at the same time Blitzo too wants to be Moxxie’s friend, but he hates to admit it because he has no experience with friendships and being a boss gives at least some feeling of superiority over Moxxie which he desperately clings to. It could have been a great dynamic between two viewpoints -- Moxxie’s who is trying to be his best and care about people he loves like he was taught and Blitzo’s who has a very jaded and cynical perception of the world but at the same time is frustrated with how miserable it makes him feel, which makes him think that Moxxie is the problem. That hidden rivalry with Moxxie could have ended up becoming his motivation to bond with Luna and finally talk things out with Fizzaroli, mending his life bit by bit. - Luna and Millie could have had a great friendship because of how similar they are (due to their backgrounds). Maybe Millie kept having smoke breaks with Luna and helping her to play pranks on Blitzo or maybe they had a good synergy as the team muscle -- but they never actually called each other friends because of their social upbringing. But then Moxxie appeared and Millie started spending less time with Luna and Luna actually found herself feeling bad about it -- which made her angry with Moxxie. Maybe, that even pushed her to actually talk to her dad because they had something to fume about together. And then at the end of her arc, Luna finally admits to herself that she is angry at Moxxie because she thinks he stole her friend. And then she realizes that she actually considers Millie a friend and wants friends. And then she realizes that Moxxie actually didn’t steal her friend from her, and she could still hang out with Millie because having a relationship doesn’t replace social life and it’s possible to have a partner AND friends. Luna just had to accept that Millie became much happier now and work on her own happiness too. In other words, Vivizie gives me the impression of a person suffering from the fanfiction author syndrome where she needs to “woobify” every character she finds attractive (Angel Dust, Stolas, Blitzo, Fizzaroli, Moxxie) for the single reason of putting them into fanservice-y situations. Even though such situations don’t contribute to the plot or even make sense in terms of the characters’ personalities, backgrounds, and dynamic with the rest of the cast. However, what works in fanfiction (sometimes, mind you, there is a lot of great interesting fan works focused on worldbuiling, lore, and the way characters interact), doesn’t work in shows. Especially, when you start a show with a certain premise and then diverge from it greatly.

  • @Bgh583
    @Bgh583 3 дня назад

    Despite the initial excitement and viral interest "Helluva Boss" managed to generate, the show reveals itself to be an underwhelming mess that relies heavily on shock value and superficiality rather than meaningful storytelling or character development. The most glaring flaw of "Helluva Boss" is its incoherent narrative structure. The show struggles to maintain a consistent or engaging plot, often darting haphazardly between various storylines without providing sufficient depth or context. This erratic pacing makes episodes feel both rushed and dragged out, lacking any sense of purposeful direction. The attempts at story arcs are half-baked at best, leaving viewers confused and unsatisfied. Character development is practically non-existent. The characters are painfully shallow, often pigeonholed into stereotypes that strip them of any unique or compelling traits. Rather than evoking empathy or interest, they come off as caricatures designed purely for cheap laughs or shock tactics. This approach rapidly becomes tiresome and, frankly, irritating. The protagonist and supporting characters alike are delivered with such predictability and lack of nuance that it's hard to care about their fates or motivations. Worse still is the show’s reliance on crude, often offensive humor. The jokes not only fall flat but also frequently cross the line into distasteful territory. The creators seem to mistake vulgarity for wit, flooding episodes with crude gags and explicit content that add nothing to the actual narrative. Instead of clever satire or incisive parody, we're left with an endless barrage of tasteless jokes that quickly grow monotonous. The show’s tonal inconsistency is another major downfall. "Helluva Boss" repeatedly attempts to balance dark humor with emotional moments, but the integration is clumsy and ineffective. The supposed heartfelt scenes feel awkwardly tacked on, devoid of genuine emotion or resonance. The transitions between different tones are jarring, further detracting from any potential emotional impact. In terms of representation, "Helluva Boss" falls into disconcerting territory. The attempt to include a diverse range of characters is laudable in theory, but the execution is severely lacking. The show often resorts to offensive stereotypes and derogatory humor that can be alienating and harmful to viewers from marginalized communities. Rather than being a beacon of inclusivity, it risks perpetuating damaging clichés and insensitive portrayals. Finally, the visual and audio presentation, while technically competent, cannot mask the deep-seated issues with substance. High-quality animation and voice acting are squandered on a show that fundamentally fails to provide a satisfying, coherent, or respectful narrative experience. In conclusion, "Helluva Boss" is a stark example of wasted potential. Its failure to construct a compelling story, develop complex characters, or provide genuinely humorous content renders it a disappointing watch. The overreliance on shock value and offensive jokes only exacerbates its flaws. For those seeking a thoughtful, engaging, and respectful animated series, "Helluva Boss" is a regrettable misstep best avoided.

    Viv is VERY into queer men and Helluva Boss just makes it so painfully obvious. Show me 2 female characters that are as in depth, well written, fleshed out and have as much character development as literally every single male character in BOTH of her shows. The more you think about it, the more you'll realise the ONLY characters who have any hope of staying relevant are male, or queer...Preferably both. She put SO much time, effort and energy into the queer relationships and the male characters but either forgot to, yknow, actually flesh out the female characters or just made them the token women/token straight person of the friend group which is REALLY aggravating from a show that's helped me in such a traumatic time in my life. I only didn't see it sooner from the concussion I've been suffering from since my accident in MARCH but now I CANNOT UNSEE IT

    I love comparing backgrounds in this show to other entertainment. Luna story would be much better if instead she had a hard time trusting blitz because her family abandoned her in the past so she in general has attachment issues to fear of abandonment. Changing Lina’s issues into a different story arc for her character. You could make blitz issue also attachment issues and irresponsibly adopted Luna to try to get over his fear of attachment. Them both having the same issue but also in different levels of getting over there issues Luna being still in a place where she doesn’t want to try to get attached to someone who thinks is going to abandon her. Where blitz is in a stage where he is pushed over that hump but doesn’t fully know how to accept Luna as his daughter and Luna not being willing to accept him as a father. It would be a very interesting story. Of course blitz needs to stop making sex jokes every 2 seconds. For moxie they could make his family much more supportive of him in private but in public they constantly treat him terrible because there entire community treats moxie like crap during his childhood because he’s easy to push him around and one of the reasons he fell for Mille is because Mille didn’t treat him like crap when he met her and Mille would constantly defend moxie. Mills’s drama could easily be her parents don’t accept moxie as there son in law. I think these dynamics would be highly interesting and the characters could easily have hearts to hearts with each other pushing them further and to develop their characters. But many times it just seems like they don’t care for each other very much then other moments they do.

    Not even gonna watch the video the premise all of these characters have daddy issues is blatantly wrong to anyone who watches the show and doesn't just see any and all of problems involving family as daddy issues. An arranged marriage, abandonment issues, being a kid going thru a messy divorce, being the same kid's parent who was put into an arranged marriage and the gilded cage that is aristocracy and Blitzo's whole existence are not daddy issues. Moxxie is the only one who can be said to have a direct issue with their father, but that's purely because he was born into a Mafia family and it is such a tiny portion of his character. To even tar these characters with the brush of daddy issues is so dismissive and clearly shows a lack of understanding of the characters it's embarrassing.

      Blitzo- His dad was abusive and preferred Fizz. He has daddy issues Moxxy- Forced into the mafia life by his dad and made to kill others by his orders. He has daddy issues. Loona- Constantly argues with Blitzo on him not being her dad. She has daddy issues. Stolas- Had a father who forced him into a position he was very unprepared for and didnt seem to even care about him. He has daddy issues. Olivia- Is in a constant battle between her mom and dad because Stolas fails at being a parent. She has daddy issues. Charlie-Barely seen her dad since she was a child. She has daddy issues. Need I go on? The fact that you disagree with him yet refuse to watch the video shows how ignorant you are.

      Millie receives constant appreciation from the other characters. Moxxie loves her more than he loves himself, Blitzo never takes jabs at her the way he does towards Moxxie and even Loona paid her a compliment in "Truth Seekers". It's shitty characterization and people are right to be dismissive of it.
