Act VI always gives me the chills, gives a hopeful future for humanity vibe, which is somewhat ironic considering it corresponds to a "Great Collapse".

Pero como esta obra maestra no está nominado al Oscar?? Es la banda sonora mas ecléctica de Joe de toda su carrera, no digo que se merezca el Oscar o no, pero mínimo merecía estar nominado, es una obra maestra!!!

@@kensukefan47 Mh for me, I think the motivations of the key characters are all really well presented - through their behavior and actions. Naturally Mahito and his family members are the most obvious/clearly presented. But I also just saw the movie for the 2nd time in the cinema. That certainly helps. I also got one step closer to the core interpretation I think. Simply incredible. I was again brought to tears multiple times.

@kensukefan47 I'm not mad at you. We are all free to like or dislike a movie for various reasons. I have a friend who doesn't like "Lord of the Rings"and "Harry Potter". I'm not a fan of her favorite movies ( mostly romcom) . We are still friends and mocking each other with our taste in movies. Have a great time wherever you are. 👋

@@kensukefan47 The story and world-building feel rather odd I'll agree...but at the same time I find "The Boy And The Heron" to be more of a psychological journey than a proper novel , despite the fact it is presented as your usual children's fairy tale . I feel like the author's intention here is to convey the emotions , the process Mahito goes through and ultimately share the moral of the story ( or rather , its teaching ) throughout the protagonist's and the main cast's actions and answers . Miyazaki's also rather old and has been in his "I don't really care about other people's judgement about how I do / wanna do stuff" for a solid while , at least towards strangers , likely . The script's also fairly auto-biographic when it comes to many details ( Miyazaki's father re-marrying to Hayao's mother's sister , still his dad being an airplanes manifacturing company's director , the bombings , etc... ) and it is not entirely unlikely that Hayao might have needed to craft this story to process some of what either are or used to be at least some of his feelings and thoughts towards it all . The movie is about mourning ( the fire and Mahito's mum ) , struggling with the pain and closing in to new possibilities ( Natsuko trying to bond with Mahito because she legit wants to be his new mother being initially rejected by him ) , coping mechanisms ( Mahito harming himself , trying to draw the attention of his father away from Natsuko and back to him ) , the difficulty of moving forward ( and the possibility of seeking shelter in dreams thus rejecting life and its flawed nature , such as the old man did by creating the alternate world ) , the necessity of confronting fear ( from both Natsuko and Mahito , the first one being afraid of not being worthy or capable enough to be Mahito's mum , afraid of him rejecting her...until she's indirectly reassured by Himi...and the second one afraid of being rejected himself , afraid of betraying his former mother's memory , afraid of losing Natsuko as well ) and much more . It is about whether or not , knowing the ending , you'd still be fine with living the journey ( Himi ) because you are happy enough with who you are as a person and with where your choices led you in life / what they produced you simply wouldn't change things even if you had the chance to cause that'd mean not being the same person anymore , not having met all the people whom you cherish and contributed to make you who you are , not having experienced all the things that brough you to be yourself...and ultimately not being able to see the fruits of the seeds your actual self has been planting throughout its entire life . It is about realising the people we mourn wouldn't feel saddened or betrayed by us trying to move forward...but would instead encourage us to seek our happiness out of their own love for us . Remember them but live . That's what they'd want . It is about rejecting the comforting shelter provided by dreams and ultimately choosing to fight against the pain , against fear , against doubt , to find our own answers and resolve and finally managing to move on , bit by bit , one step at a time . I personally felt like the characters and their motivations were understandable enough...though I obviously must be missing on some stuff myself as understanding it all is no easy task by any means...and this comment has already turned into a massive essay and I don't really wish to have it grow even larger by explaining what I managed to grasp about each character in detail . A lovely movie and soundtrack in my opinion but it's totally fine to think otherwise .

I guess you can say that in a way. What I got out of it was: There'll at least be some sort of someone to take at least a building block from your works. Whether it'll for their own stories, improvements, innovations, applications, desires, its up to them to decide. There'll alway at least be a person to take something away and figure out what they should do with it.

I’ve only just finished seeing it and dear god you’re all right. You’re all so right. The little nods to things he’s passionate about I can’t believe I didn’t realise it sooner. Those plane canopies are for aircraft which is one of his great loves and here they are in a film that has nothing to do with aircraft. It really is all his final way of saying goodbye, to us, to his passion for animation, to his love of aviation to it all. It’s all one big metaphor, god that makes this film so much better and it was already good.
