In 2018 we interviewed business owner, Soon Yi, who operates the restaurants Golden Bell and You and I, for our South Korea to Trinidad documentary. She spoke of her experiences in Trinidad as a Korean person, dealing with racist remarks, the difference between the two countries, among other things. We shot and English version of the interview, along with two takes of the Korean version. This is the uncut raw version of the English interview. A candid interview with my great grandmother

My great grandmother's name was Sookmin Ramsampath. She passed away on the 6th of June 2021. Please enjoy this video of a short time I spent with her a few years ago. I barely knew her, and was not emotionally attached to her, but I still mourn the death of this beautiful woman.

Here's a little video I filmed in July 2019. Here's some info on the dish: Long ago this dish was first made in Trinidad and Tobago, by our poor ancestors and was considered a poor man's dish. The ingredients were relatively affordable and grown, and thus needy families could prepare this meal for their loved ones. Nowadays, it's a staple in our breakfast or dinner cuisine, paired with fried ba...

Some of y’all in these comments are riding so hard🙄😒 probably a bunch of K-pop fans. It’s not that serious, Trinidadians use generalizations for everyone and they don’t do it with any kindve malice. They call ppl who spk Spanish, Spanish now is that person from Spain usually no,most likely Venezuela but that doesn’t change them calling them Spanish. Now if she tells them to call her Korean and they refuse that’s showing malice and just plain ignorance. U think if u go to Korea and tell them u Trini they will refer to u as such? From someone who has travelled Asia I can tell u they won’t. They will take pics of u,sometimes without asking, they will touch ur hair and ur person or just stare at u dead in ur face. Mostly it’s because they never seen a poc in real life, some are curious, some can be racist and you’d never know cause u don’t speak the language. They have done a great job appropriating black culture as far as their music, dress and dance style. I guess that’s the diversity she’s talking about. I’m happy for her she was able to find her place in Trinidad.

I always found that racism is overlooked in Trinidad and this is coming from a mixed “red” Trinidadian child. I have kind of asian looking eyes and my name is a Russian name called “Anya” and people use to think how it’s an “asian name” and mock my eyes, butcher my name by saying it with a fake Chinese accent and mock Chinese language. (I must say though that this happened while I was in school and doubt that grown adults would act this way therefore making this a very uncommon thing to expirience) About the being called “Chinee” thing is not racism but our slang. However, I can see from the foreigner perspective how it can be viewed. Overall, we’re educated about our history but hardly about ethnicities. It took me years and my own research to learn how there were different kinds of Asians and not just Chinese people. Which is absurd to me. I enjoy learning about asian cultures and am currently learning Japanese and am planning on learning Korean next. I already know some Hangul but yes I get very interested in these kinds of interviews.

Are you studying on a micro-level? I didn't get what his interest is other than - I like to take pics and collect and need money to facilitate more of this. So to end, I want to see a more in depth piece on this guy to justify his need for funding.

Nah don't do this here. I live in Trinidad and Tobago my whole life and I only ever see Asian people in they stores. They don't interact with the wider culture and vex talking about isolation. Brother in Christ, I stop going by the asians by me because some of them just don't care about customer service abd honestly I have to think it's racist they racist. I not saying asians don't belong here "every creed and race find an equal place" nobody never do allyuh nothing here except buy your merchandise. The Chinee parang song is the best you could come up with in terms of anti asian sentiment? Lol I'm sure it really sucks to be referred to as Chinese but we don't know and they don't even attempt to integrate, not we problem. To the ignorant bastards that does do they nonsense, seriously stop kimchi is delicious. Don't fuck that up for me.

To me, this video is a bit misleading. It makes it seem that this poor lady is subject to incessant racist behaviour coming from Trinidadian people and I am willing to bet that that is not the case. While Chinese people are not the majority in Trinidad, Chinese influence is huge and I will readily admit that we ARE ignorant in the sense that, if you look Asian, as in, "oriental" Asian, most people are predisposed to assume you are Chinese and will address you accordingly. When we address, describe or refer to such people as "Chinee" it's just the broken English that we speak and not in any way a racist term. There are not as many Korean people in Trinidad and with this lady being a native Korean, relatively new to our country, I empathize with her sense of isolation and I can see how her unfamiliarity with our culture can leave her feeling some kind of way. However, what she is dealing with is more ignorance and naivety and not racism, the way we know real racism to be. She says she loves the country. I seriously doubt she would love a place where the people are being malicious towards her.

True that when it first happens its Most likely a simple mistake but It becomes a problem if they still push that nerrative after it's addressed and they're informed about the correct information. Different type of Example being: a guy tries to flirt with you and you tell them you're taken or married or simply not interested and you refuse their advances yet they still continue to flirt. They don't have a bad attitude or treat you unkindly but they continue to flirt even though you've made it clear to them that you don't want to be flirted with...... It doesn't matter how kind and gentle they treat you, they're not listening to you 🤷🏾‍♀️

I always gotta be telling people that whenever they see an Asian person to say "Asian" and stop assuming that they're Chinese, Trinidadians are so ignorant 🤦🏾‍♂️. And if you guys talk to a Korean person, please don't instantly say "I love K-pop" or "I love Kdramas" or anything along those lines, talk to them the same way you'll speak to any other Trinidadian.

At first glance, she does look ethnically-Chinese, rather than the 'typical Korean' we experience via K-pop/K-drama. That said, most Trinidadians are very ignorant! My family's history on the island dates back to 1724, longer than many other Trinidadians, but I am still mistaken for a foreigner, and called various names, because I am I white. What's funny is that people in northwest Trinidad are always accused of "living in a bubble", though it is our 'brethren' from outside of the northwest who continue to wallow in their ignorance. Fantastic video!

They speak just like us and everyone recognizes them as Trinidadian. If she doesn’t like it there she can back to the homeland! Nobody is making her stay in Trinidad. We are so ignorant YET I’m the states we have the highest incomes out of everyone from the Caribbean. Does that sound like an ignorant population to you?

This is precisely why I hate Trini sometimes (yes I'm Trinidadian), the height of ignorance. I get that she looks Chinese but even when she says isn't, they keep pushing "Chinese" onto her. Trinidadians don't wanna be called Guyanese but they must call her something she's not. It's Wrong. And trying to educate them is a waste. I'm someone who wants to visit S. Korea, loves the culture, loves the food, loves the music and the shows and the fashion its irritating to see people treating Koreans this way, and it's especially irritating to be a part of the people when this is their behaviour. Also... Golden Bell is the first place I've eaten Korean food, I had Japchae and it was so good I went ahead and learned how to make it. Would you look at that... A Korean wants to create a nicer Trinidad but Trinidad don't want to create a nicer Trinidad. Smh. I'm still. Happy she loves it here.
