Thank you for this video on IDing hickories. I found a few nuts on our property and my plant ID app says I gave a young pignut tree sprout. The animals brought them here because we have so several varieties of ash trees but no hickory that I can see. When I try to identify the tree, sometimes (especially young trees) they have both opposing and alternating leaves. Leaflets range from 5 to 9 and are similar in shape to the hickories. The bark on their trunks are raised ridged... other characteristics which make identification (ash vs. hickeory) difficult, especially when buds were hit by frost so no nuts are forming. I wish someone would create a video to help discern the differences for positive identification. I'll keep searching around yhe neighborhood...

Be aware that Picture This has pretty poor privacy unless you take specific steps to limit cookies and trackers; they give a lot of your usage data to third parties using cookies and trackers. (It's in their privacy policy.) I have not checked on the other apps; some may be just as bad, or worse. I'm having pretty good results with PlantNet (free).

2:46 *fruit maturity is 1st week of Aug to last week of Oct, with a 3 week to 6 week harvest window, depending upon cultivar. Ripe flesh can be white to deep orange depending on cultivar. most have yellow flesh. There are white flesh ones in the wild SW of Cincinnati, North West of Florance Kentucky along the Ohio River. And also in Canada, plus parts of Georgia near Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. Some varieties have color break to the skin & some don't. best to slap the trunk or fast vibrate shack trunk. ripe fruits will fall. don't pick them. if they have to be pickedd they are not fully ripe. near ripe with ripen on the counter in 4 days. if picked too soon, they will never fully ripen. Some cultivars like Mango, marshmallow, Wabash, Rappahannock will go very soft. Some like Susquehanna, Siri Vishnu, KSU Chappell, stay very firm when ripe. Some like Nyomi's Delicious turn yellow before ripe. Others stay dark green when ripe. Best to vibrate the trunk!*

I've been trying to work up to trying bugs. If I ever actually do it, I know I will think back to this video lol I think you're my hero. I do wonder what they'd be like as "croutons" in a ceasar salad though. How would you describe "bug taste"? My brain wants to think it's dirt + bitter + sour.

Background: I have a BA in Botany and a background in the technical identification of plants. I have downloaded several of these plant id apps and a fair amount of experience with both PlantSnap and PictureThis. Of the two I prefer PictureThis, but to be honest it has given me incorrect identifications several times when I knew the correct identification of the plants. At the same time it has correctly identified plants with no flowers for me and in one case even correctly identified a newly emerged plant which only had cotyledons on a naked stem. So my advice: be cautious and double check against other sources if not sure. Both of those apps do cost money for usage. I have also downloaded Seek and iNaturalist which are both from the same developer and Planta and PlantNet, but have not yet had a chance to test any of them out. The PlantNet app interests me the most. I have not seen anything which lists any charge or cost related to PlantNet anywhere and I do have the app. It has a world wide reach. There are a number of specific groups on the app working on things like (these are actual groups): All the Yellow Flowers on Earth, United Kingdom Flora, medicinal plants in South Africa, Plants of South London, England. They also have very specific geographic groupings. In North America they have 10 different areas like Subarctic, Eastern Canada, Western United States, North-Central United States, etc. In North America most of those geographic areas has a listing of several thousand species. It is also possible to pull up a map of the whole world with all of the groups on their specific geographic locations and select that group. There are 2875 listed groups on PlantNet. Some of these are tiny, like one lone boy doing a Boy Scout project.
