Nikon ZF - My Thoughts - 100% Impressed!
I've had the Nikon Zf for about 2 months and done 8 weddings - it's AMAZING!
The AF is where it should be, the video is ok, I (now) love the flippy screen, BUT the Image Quality sets it apart from every other camera I've owned - the images are comparable to my Leica M10 - (in many ways better!) very low noise, film like character and perfect skin tones.
I've never been more excited about a camera! (inc. the Z8 and Leica!)

      That was end of 23 - I kept a fair amount of Nikon gearr inc. D780. By April 24 I'd had it with Sony! Too much noise, couldn't get to like the handling, but mostly I missed the Nikon image quality. So now have a Zf, D780, Z6ii and just (yesterday!) got a Df and use all F mount 1.4 primes. Finally realise just how good Nikon images can be 🙂

    I've bought a Nikon Zf recently in indigo blue leather skin and i am very satisfied with it. It's exactly what i wanted (and tried with FUJI long ago but build quality and ergonomics was not for me). I want to buy some Voigtländer primes for it. This camera is great for smaller primes. I also have some Nikkor F-Mount stuff. The 50 mm f/1.8 with the FTZ II is already a nice combination.

    How is the automatic eye-focus? Do you use Eye-AF, or do you use single point placed on the eye (which is what I always did with my original Z6 - because I found its eye-AF was very unreliable.)

    • @CreativePixelPhotos
      @CreativePixelPhotos 8 дней назад

      I use 3D tracking with eye AF turned on. If there's a face or eye it'll lock on and you can move the camera all over the place and it stays locked. Pretty much as good as the Z8 which is same as Z9 so pretty amazing!

    A big heavy brick of a camera. Still not a great selection of compact lenses that look remotely aesthetically appealing on this. Mismatched card slots and it will stop recording once either card fills up. The micro slot appears to be only UHS-I compatible. Why does Nikon keep making these stupid design choices?

    • @CreativePixelPhotos
      @CreativePixelPhotos 11 дней назад

      I DO agree about the lenses - wouldn't be great to see some attractive Z mount 1.4 primes - ones that even have an aperture ring! Heavy brick? Only slightly heavier than my Leica M10 so no problem. Filling a card up - I get about 4k shots on both cards so never ever come close to filling one up. I undersatnd the micro card due to space limitation - I'd rather have that than just a single card.

    D700 looks much nicer. Might be one of the best colour pallettes of any digital cameras ever made. At least top 5. But its not just relative to their Z cameras, it also applies to all the Nikon DSLR cameras that came after the D700 with the exception of the D4 and D600/610 which also have very nice colours. Here is the issue. There is a green cast which very visible, at least to my eye. Yet very unintuitive to fix. The tint slider wont fix it. This really degrades the richness of the reds and blues. The greens also have too much of a yellow hue. Its the same on Sony cameras but significantly worse. You can really notice how green everything is in neutralish tones like dark browns. Canon doesn't have this issue on their DSLR range which is probay why people love the colours on those cameras. Canons also had less dynamic range so they tended to be a bit more punchy, which is probably why people rave about canon colour science. However canon's mirrorless cameras do suffer from digital greenness and the colours arent as nice as they used to be.Fujifilm are also very good when it comes to rich reds and blues and not over saturated greens, probably thanks to their x-trans sensor design. Bayer filters do mean that digital cameras have twice as many green pixels as they do blue or red and they are found in a regular pattern. This means there are lines running diagonally across your sensor that have no red or blue information . This I think is part of the problem. You can fix this colour shift in lightroom if you go to the calibration panel. Shift the greens to a bit more blue and reduce the saturation. Shift the blue a hint to the cyan and increase the saturation on the reds. Then set your white balance. Go to the colour mixer, decrease the saturation on the orange and increase the lightness of the oranges if you want to improve skin tones. Then decrease the green channel saturation, but balance it by also reducing the lightness of the greens. This should get you closer on later nikon models but every image different and will need different tweaks. But it should be a good starting point. Same for Sony, except you also have to deal with and balance it with weird magentas, so probably calibrate the red channel to be more orangey red if on a sony. In addition to colour, there are also much more pleasing tonal graduations on the d700 and d600/610, more microcontrast (3D pop) as long as you have a lens that can render the 3D pop. This makes black and white images look amazing.

      I'm referring to Raw - in the past I've had many presets that I'd apply depending on light, situation etc - to get the look I wanted (which is kinda 60's colour film - Fuji400h I particularly like) and then I'd play around again to get realistic skin tones. But the ZF I could seroiusly just adjust the crop a tad and maybe exposure 1/4 stop and that's it! Raw files are good enough not to need any adjustments. Now I do apply a very gentle preset but point is I don't HAVE to. Also has "camera Rich Tone Portrait" profile which I've not seen before so jpegs are even better!

The noise was the biggest issue - with the D780, Z6ii I can shoot at 12800 iso and still get a useable photo - the Z8 has noise at like 4000! The ZF btw is the Best ever of low light / high iso. Battery life wasn't great - maybe 600 shots compared to 7/800 with z6ii and over 2k from D780 and around 12oo from Zf. And the Z mount lenses never pleased me - I "thought" the Sony GM lenses would but in the end mothing matchs Nikon's F mount G primes. For me....

      @@CreativePixelPhotos I love the G lenses and the character they have. Lovely to see you are in love with the Zf, might pick one up myself.

    Hi Allen. What happened to all your Sony gear? Last time I’m sure you had switched to Sony right? I love to see the videos of you gear heads with oodles of gas 😂

    Glad you love it! I love mine for walk around, casual shots. I’ve moved from weddings to sports photojournalism so my Z8 fills that niche. 👍🏽
