Just a video that's been tickling my brain since the Metro centre bus rally in 2024 when as you hear an overheard conversation about engine sounds different because of the different fuel pump fitted to a 680 engine. It does and when I was there taking the footage I was ruling out mechanical layouts and air filter intakes. Then I noticed they are both registered in 1971-2 which gives them both K...

Cumbria Easter Rally Kirkby Stephen Brough Leyland Bristol AEC Bus Lets go for a wander ?
C.I.E of course made a fatal mistake when designing their double deckers, in that they effectively put the engine inside the saloon of the bus. I remember travelling on them well, while they were pleasant to look at, the smell of diesel fumes inside them was awful. Another example of gobshite engineering on the part of their design teams of that time. They continued to make bad decisions even when buying in ready built buses into their provincial arm "Bus Eireann". Coaches were altered by them against the advice of the coaches builders resulting in operational problems with them throughout their service lives.
The Edinburgh Atlantean takes me back to student days! The Lothian Regional Transport buses had the smartest livery of any buses I have ever seen.
This Plaxton Supreme V Express on C53/F body work is, quite simply, Supremely Superb. I like it a lot. Enjoyable video too.
Many thanks for your kind words The previous owner Tim Phillips has a lovely documented history of this restoration and how he stumbled across LFT 5X and may I add spent the money to make it look superb.
Thank you for this video. This National is a credit to the NNRG. I remember these buses because I travelled to Amersham College each day in one.
Think respect to all those whom preserve classic transport for us to revisit memories and enjoy the rides of yesteryear.
Think they ran these buses on 136 Ripon (then Station) to Harrogate. (50-60s). West Yorkshire shared route - 36 and then onto Leeds. Latter still running today
Very obvious Volvo sounds coming from this. I’m guessing it must have taken quite a lot of modifications plus a lot of work to do the engine swap?
I remember a National going into Leyland dealer Hargreaves bus and coach in Stockton Teesside for this Volvo conversion and it was back on service within a week. Think it took longer to clean up the oil spill it left in the bus station when something exploded in the engine bay
Bit of an aside from the National, but seeing the GNE 78 "Lime" there, on which I very likely have ridden, wow, brings up some memories of moving to Annfield Plain from Colne in Lancashire in 2011, where the latter at the time had mostly Burgundy & Cream bus liveries on their Wright Renowns, to seeing this bright green citrusy-themed thing, it was a shocker (though, their bright orange 44 "Diamond" was just as jarring!), never thought I'd see one of those again!
Leyland Atlanteans were the main stay of CIE in Dublin during the 1970s - bodies were built by CIE themselves and Vanhool if memory serves me well. The bodies were very different from these two. Spent so much time travelling on these CIE buses back in the day. One thing always piqued mu curiosity and that was why the drivers never switched the engines off - winter or summer, even if they were parked up for 20 minutes and were stood outside the bus. Was there an issue with restarting these diesels ?
Maybe if the bus was far away from depot the driver was told to keep it running or had problems in the past with with same vehicle or trying to keep the bus warm. Thinking back when I was on the spanners or driving we weren't told to switch off engines unless it was a very long stop over. Thank you for your comment it's good to interact and share thoughts and memories
There was definitely no problems with starting those engines in Poland (O.680 and O.400) According to stories, drivers were stilling and selling saved under a limit fuel and they were turning off engines before even stopping completely 😂 The fun fact was, that it turned out that Autosan H9 (medium size bus) had defacto as low as 15l/100km fuel consumption and was still in use in private companies for a long time, as it was as economical as smaller buses based on vans.
Brings back memories of the early fifties in Norwich. I remember catching an Eastern Counties bus, (91 on the route board), from Stump Cross to Norwich Thorpe station. This was during my summer holidays from grimy London to stay with my grandparents in Bull Close road. I can still hear the distinct whine of the gears from the 5 cylinder engine, and the size of the flywheel cover at the front of the lower salloon. Happy (inocent) days.
@@user-bc6mz8ob9m many thanks for your comment and sharing your memories
RUclips algorithms are really incredible. I was recently watching a video about old Polish Autosan busses with a lot of unforgettable sounds of their engines and I found this video on the feed. Quick Google research and yep, 0.680 engine license was sold to Poland and that's why SW680 "big Leyland" is singing the exact same song of its people. BTW. 0.400 is SW400 small Layland and damn we love its sound, as it was rumbling and whistling in the legend of local transport and school buses Autosan H9.
Many thanks for your lovely comment. I don't think my videos will ever spike into the you tube algorithm but I am happy sharing my content to the world. I was looking at an old Bristol yesterday and that was fitted with a Leyland 400 series sadly it wasn't running but video is currently being edited and will be on my channel shortly. It had an interesting life and back story when I stumbled across her a few weeks ago but only got chance to film this weekend due the appalling wet British weather
Leyland were bang on with their engines in the 1950s and very successful with these direct-injection engines which used (if I'm not mistaken) a Ricardo patent. DAF in the Netherlands bought the license for the O.400, and made its own derivatives of it, including petrol powered variants. For the big trucks the O.680 was first purchased from Leyland, later on produced by DAF themselves under license. The origins of the Euro 3 11.6 litre engine can, although not much remained the same, still be traced back to the O.680. The smaller engine even lived on to reach 9.2 litre in Euro 5 guise!
Love the starting handle at the beginning

Shame about the non working speedo.......
Maybe because of the working modern tachograph on the left ?
@@The-Silent-Ridernever noticed the later add on....... But to be fair it is mainly obscured by the steering wheel.
@@JohnUnderwood-yz2xu Hi John , when I saw the video I was drawn to the original speedo not working but knew that the the tachograph was fitted as I have driven this vehicle many many years ago on school contracts and repairs. @@The-Silent-Rider FAB!!!!!
Brilliant video, Manual Leopard too, very rare , I had one too Duple dominant 4 bought new from Paul Sykes psv in 1982, had 20 leopards in the end for my school contracts, had then so that drivers didnt bugger clutches up , like on my Scania coaches, had SND352X which was a Tiger plaxton, wish i still had one of them, Dave Smith, formerly Smiths of Brenzett, retired.
@@DavidSmith-jm2ux many thanks for your comment and kind words and information. It was a quick grab and go video as most of my content is driver kindly let me hop aboard and take a video . I learnt to drive a manual leopard and that was my bus of choice on school contracts as it was always left in the corner of the compound as drivers said it was too hard work but it was a great drive

An unusual manual Daimler.
oh she's a lovely old bus with a long and interesting history , wonderful 👍👍
You have just made me remember about it's story and what I should have done when editing the video and I didn't add the photo of its history within the video. I tried to document it in the description but a photo is better than a thousand words. This will be in my next community post as you point out it's a lovely history Many thanks for your lovely comment it makes doing these videos so rewarding to me to share what I see with the world.
Very keen to learn more about this one, especially to hear/see running and driven.
Yeah I wish I caught it running and hearing the Gardner lump ticking over
I think the dug's feelin seek. Keep waiting for him to change up into top gear.
Sadly the site speed limit within Beamish is a maximum 12mph so all the buses chug along waiting to change up

Beautiful Looking Classic Coach
It was a great experience to travel on her and when I got home I did some research and saw it's restoration and it must have been accident damaged at the front as when purchased it had double oblong headlights and the owner put it back to original twin round headlights. Thank you for your comment

Theres a modern shape ok coach in sheringham norfolk.. Shocking a bit of the north east in norfork. Driver wondered why we were so taken by it ..
I wonder what it is? I know there are still some old OK buses stored in barns as well as the preserved in museums. I will have to enquire to those whom might know in the bus circles when I see them again Thanks for your message gets the cogs whirring
Thanks for sharing the video. From the engine sound, very well maintained Leyland. Hope someone will buy after retirement. Instead of selling for scrap metal.
Check out my recent video for chippy trip which we ride in L14 and within I have added some engine notes within as we travel to the coast. She is in preservation with its current owner and selling is not an option. Thanks for your comment
@@The-Silent-Rider You are welcome. Glad to hear that it's been taken care.
The leyland growl. Love it 👍
Leyland still produces only front engine underpowered buses in India. They're not of so good ride quality and yet to introduce a multiaxle bus chassis.😢
What a beauty !!
