The Hurricane has slowed down the work on the Exterior Restoration, so I’ve been spending it working on the gardens. Lots of planting - 28 boxwood, 6 Burford Holly, 3 Azaleas, 2 Tea Olive, and more and more. Plus the shutters have come in so a sneak peak at those.

Part of the beauty of Cedar Grove is with its gardens. It has an 18th century terraced garden laid out when the home was first built. The ancient boxwood that once graces the front of the home were sold to Colonial Williamsburg in the 1930s and can still be seen at the Governor’s Palace today. This tour walks through these features and then lays out my plans for restoring and building upon thes...

A new tour giving you a look at what has changed inside. Don’t get too excited. It’s not much. The only thing I’ve done is unpack and arrange furniture. I haven’t done anything with paint or window treatments or rugs. There is still a long way to go with this house restoration, but the interior will be the most fun part!

Some sad news arrived at Cedar Grove over the weekend. One of the largest oak trees has been deemed unhealthy and needs to be removed given its close proximity to the house. A large limb fell out of on Saturday, without a storm or anything. Luckily, it fell in such a way that it avoided the house, the boxwood, and other trees. So as warning shots go, this one was a perfect one.

I recently bought a c. 1790 Federal style home in SC. This grand home was in the same family from 1825 to about 1980, so maintains all of its original character, including the French handpainted wallpaper that was installed when the house was first built - allegedly a wedding from Napoleon himself. I am about to start restoring this house, so wanted to show you what I am dealing with before I p...

My name is Brian Branton, and I recently purchased this amazing historic home in SC. Cedar Grove was built between 1790 and 1805, is on the National Register of Historic Places, and has amazing architectural details like a barrel vaulted ceiling in its center hallway, its original mantels, and the hand-painted French wallpaper that was installed when the house was first built. She needs a lot o...
