Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded is often viewed as the least important, least contributing title. However, there is reason for this, and that reasoning might help develop our perspective on it to be more favoring. No nostalgia bias included.

tetsuya nomura's foundational era.

And now we begin a multi-part series delving in to Mr. Tetsuya Nomura's character design by looking at everything he has ever designed. Ever. No joking. This episode is fairly light and lays the foundation for his career to come, focusing on his work on Final Fantasy VI (1994), Final Fantasy VII (1997), Parasite Eve (1998), and Final Fantasy VIII (1999). NAGORIYUKI NAGORIYUKI I LOVE YOU
So there's actually a practial reason to having oversized weapons in video games: readability. Having the weapons be larger and more distinct makes it easier to see what is going on. This is especially important in games that require quick reaction times. This also combines with exaggerated movements for the same reason, with smaller weapons usually having more pronounced animations. In real life, fights oftentime are about moving as little as possible. This is to conserve stamina, disguse your next move, and not leave yourself open when one wrong move can mean death. So when you see people complain that the combat isn't "realistic", that sometimes these things are done for a reason. Also note that these people probably watch CinemaSins and are not fun at parties.
2:24 definitely an ai narration
I remember reading this manga like 10 years ago where the protag had a cracked BFS. Havent been able to find it again. Feels bad man
you earned my subscription by way of starting a video about big swords (a thing i already love) with Nujabes
I was about to about to comment and tells about Ultraman max's max galaxy maximum power where his sword extendes so much it reach the outer space and more, But after I watch the entire video and realize it's all about actual blade made from metal and not blades made from energy like a lightsaber and normal ones but with the ability to extend it self
LOVE the video, had to skip Kirito, as I hate him more than I can express, but I love everything else. You're a solid youtuber, got the sub~
@@KasifelVT yay! Yeah, SAO was my first anime so it felt right to include, but after sifting thru clips idk if I could ever watch it again 💀 thanks for the sub! 🩶
I was kinda waiting for you to talk about Dante and Nero from DMC4 and 5 but hey it’s fine
BFS. I would say that more stands for Big F*cking Sword.
8:58 Ayoo what is mickey doing there ?!
It is a inherent need that we all acquire a Blade Of Humongousa Proportions, A Shaft Of Gigantic Necessitation, A Oblong Geometry With Monumental Length
You know whats better then a giant sword? A giant sword with explosions and turns into a giant axe, the switch axe.
I thought it was mimicry and justica on the thumbnail :(
2:12 So this guy is why highlander exist in For Honor.
zweihanders irl too also apply
bow-ken, not bocken
One I really like that isn’t discussed frequently is Red’s Transistor sword from the game Transistor. It’s fascinating because it is both the tool she uses to achieve her goals, but also the burden that sets the entire plot off, as it was used to attempt to kill her. Without getting into spoilers, it is such a fascinating use of the trope as Red is not a fighter by any notion, but she has to use the weapon which was meant to kill her, and in some ways stole the most important part of herself, while trying to save those she cares about
i think guts sword is a reminder of his childhood he uses an oversized sword because when he was a kid fighting on the frontlines all the swords were oversized.
I think aatrox deserves its place in this video
Would like to see some Warhammer characters in this but was genuinely expecting to see Dante from the Devil May Cry series
Ok fr tho where's my 7' tall Pierre history biopic or game?
I sobbed like a baby when it was confirmed Auron was already a dead guy. That character was everything to me in that game.
BATTLECRY!!!
Zangetsu has story and character significance like every other zanpakuto in bleach so it should’ve has both 1 and 3
The Samurai Champloo song ✨
Monster Hunter has some great swords. They are pretty great. Maybe make a tier list for all of them, maybe, idk, you decide. I do like Black Clover the most, where we get a decent training or some clever ideas on how to wield those huge hunk of metals. - Let the sword wield you instead of you wielding it, or use your body to keep the momentum, I think it could work in real life. Just like the difference between tennis racquet and a badminton racquet. The difference is the joint in your arm going from the wrist to your elbow, because of a heavier weapon. So to wield a heavier object, I guess you have to change the joint to the shoulder to lessen the stress of your body. Sorry for the rambling..
I still hope after they finish the remake trilogy they turn the advent childrens movie into a game that playable scene for scene(with added sections for length of play an fun) to finish the series
Great video man 👍
I am never going to forget the first time I saw FF7 characters. There was just something special about them, something I have never seen at the time. I think that something is Nomura's awesomeness. Tho that only happened when I watched Advent Children since FF7 never reached my crappy town. In a way that may have been a good thing because I am not sure if my young self would like lower poly models of FF7. I guess in that way I agree with Nomura's decision to "upgrade" thoese designs in newer iterations.
Look up dead shard blades from the book stormlight
Shout-outs to Zabuza Momochi
Wait until this man hears about shard blades
Giant swords? Power armor? Good writing?! Is it getting hot in here or is that just me?
Reasons you need to watch Berserk: big man big sword
zanbato? 🤔🤷♂️
one of my top anime this year is I Parry Everything. Noor is a Great Sword himbo that only knows the fundamentals, and thats all he needs. I recommend it for every big sword enjoyer, though he doesn’t start out with one. don’t worry, he earns it!
I'm so happy to see a video about these kinds of swords. I absolutely love massive blades, there's a reason my own character uses one lmao, so seeing a video just talking about them is dope Also seeing FF15 mentioned warms my heart. I love the characters in that game
Riven from league of legends carries a broken sword that, once it gets rebuilt thanks to her ultimate ability, becomes the big sword that she once wielded. She used to be a solider for an empire called Noxus which is an empire that values strenght above all else, she received her runic sword after getting recognition from the empire but the sword was just a way to keep her alive for a mission that killed her squad and a lot of innocents. She then deserts the Noxian empire after feeling betrayed for what she was tasked to do without her knowing, she tries to break the sword but by breaking it it also kills an innocent man that was trying to help Riven. She then becomes a farmer before having her past caughting up to her. She's now trying to repair her wrongs by fighting against the empire that she once fought for and represented everything that she stood for. Her blade actually represents her story quite well. A big and powerful sword that evoques strenght just like what she thought Noxus was all about, now being a broken blade just like what Riven is, a broken women who's trying to right her wrongs.
No Valkyrie profile?
Let's not forget about the Fromsoft games 2 BFSs Stormruler and the Moonlight Great Sword
Disliked because didn't give Guts "looks cool".
@@sirondium deserved 💀💀 thanks for the comment friend 🩶
An additional piece of information is that the big sword = bodyguard has historical roots, Montante/Zweihander (The irl BFS) were used as a bodyguard's weapon, because their size serves the purpose of area control rather than "attack power", by swinging it around you deny your opponent the act of getting closer, allowing you to protect someone by keeping them out of harm's way.
za-BU-sa
I’m so glad I’m not the only one with a big sword fetish😩
More like Big Fucking Sword
nero's red queen would be a good one
A subversion to this trope that I really like is when a small weapon or object is capable of dealing massive amounts of damage that has to be witnessed to be believed. Massive swords have this menacing aura to them because they immediately exude significance and strength; you KNOW BY SIGHT they do their shit. But small items are so unassuming and so unexpected. Once you see what they can actually do, they give off this similar sense of anticipation, making the viewer wonder about the worst the object can do. Best example I know in manga is BLAME! and the Gravitational Beam Emitter. Killy (the MC) has what is arguably considered as the very first GBE in existence: a pistol. Compared to whatever Killy has to contend with in the City and all their weapons, the GBE looks so unassuming. But once you see the destruction the gun is capable of, it puts you on edge. Canonically, the GBE emits gravitons that fire straight, collapsing the gravitational stability around its trajectory, forcing an implosion then forcing an explosion. And yes, the whole trajectory is affected. It ensures utter annihilation of everything in its path compared to conventional firepower and lasers. It's like shooting linear black holes that manifest temporarily before disappearing, tearing apart the molecular structures of anything. The manga showcases well the chain reaction of destruction that Killy's GBE can deal. At its weakest, a Level 1 GBE shot has an average trajectory distance of 70 KILOMETERS. And get this; the recoil of the GBE is insane. Most fired shots send Killy flying back. At MAX level, firing the GBE completely dislocates (and even tears off) Killy's arm in the process.
Of course there also the Noisy Cricket from Men In Black.
Personally I like it how it’s done in Berserk, Guts is just a human and even in universe people are extremely surprised there is someone strong enough to wild such a massive sword, the size of the sword is a plot point that shows Guts unusual monstrous strength and was part of the story since the beginning of the series, for most of the other characters is just visual flare.
Likely been mentioned at this point, but Ludwig and his Holy Moonlight Greatsword from Bloodborne. Ludwig was a leader of Church Hunters, holy warriers tasked with both killing beasts, and knowing the truth of that the Church's use of blood heling had turned, and will eventually turn everyone, into beasts. He became one of the largest ones, having lived so long nd taking so much healing blood, that he is no longer recognizeablle aa something that was once human. His Holy Moonlight Greatsword however, being dislodged from his own back in the fight, remind him of both the man he was, and the duty he weilds, becoming a hideous beast deftly weilding an incredibly powerful magic Greatsword
Damn, no devil may cry?
Once you get to "The Blade is Me" and find out what Ichigo's old Zangetsu truly was....... this is difficult to put into words without spoilers.
