I am passionate about chemistry and scientific experiments and I would like to share some personal projects that I do as amateur. I would also like to share my opinion on some scientific or related topics.

PREPARATION AND EXPERIMENTS WITH DRY WATER
“Dry water” is an unusual substance, which resembles powdered sugar. In the sixtyes it was developed for cosmetic applications but now it has been rediscovered for use as a carbon sequestration agent to capture and seal away greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The powder shows bright promise for a number of other uses: a greener and safe way to store and transport gaseous hydrocarbons or potentially harmful materials.

Dissolving cotton, paper and wood cellulose with a "green" and non-toxic solvent: the N-methyl morpholine N-oxide. This is the same reaction used industrially in the Lyocell process. Here I used very simple lab equipment showing dissolution of both purified cellulose fibers or raw hemp fibers. Moreover it is showed how to make films and fibers from this regenerated cellulose.

What kind of aparatos did ypu use at the end?
When I try to washing it with distilled water for convert crude gel to pure gel but from this way hydrogel is fully spread in water. Also water distributed the shape of Gel it mean it convert in viscous solution…there is any other way to washing Hydrogel???
In my opinion the chitosan should be washed when it is in base form (it should not gel), after the hydrolysis with NaOH. Then, after acidification it will became a gel and adding water it will disperse and viscosizing the solution.

@@sasarello8124 Additionally, will there be any other substitutes for hydrochloric acid? I find it difficult to find it in my country (Philippines)
@@renz.5592 This is difficult. Someones used formic acid, but this is even more difficult to find. You could try with acetic acid but I cannot guarantee the result. Sulfuric acid can work, may be in the initial decarbonization phase, but I would not suggest its use in the final phase (salification of the chitosan aminic form).
Is it possible to synthesis a version of this that is hyperthin, perhaps thinner than a millimeter?
I think yes. You can try depositing a thin layer on a glass slide and wait, the nature of the gel will cause it to flow and decrease in thickness. Alternatively, you can deposit a more diluted solution and wait for the excess water to evaporate by decreasing the thickness
Correct me if i am wrong but this type of hydrogel can also be used as a scaffold for cell seeding right?
I think yes. Moreover the borate into the gel may work as preservative

Hi, in the video I talk about extrusion (with a syringe) but it is a solution of NMNO, water and cellulose. However, the cellulose extruded with this method is not thermoplastic. There are thermoplastic cellulose derivatives such as cellulose acetate. I am not aware of any elastic cellulosic derivatives.

I think that graphene/graphene oxide can be incorporated but I don't know if it will be conductive.

Good day, I have a question about the ml and the grams. Is there are ratio that can be followed or a formula for the specific ml to put per grams of the shrimp shell. I am planning to use more shrimp shells to create more chitosan for the product.
Hello I am a student from the philippines, is it possible for me to know your email as I have some questions about certain things. For starters, how many ml of reagents are need per grams of the shrimp shells. In your video you have a specific ml for each grams of shells you put. I am wondering, is there a way to make the crosslinking process slower so that I can remove the bubbles inside of the hydrogel? I would like to use an empty glass bell
Just a crazy idea: add more glycerol in the recipe, this should slow down the speed of crosslinking or inhibit it. Then, whasing the hydrogel in water the glycerol could be extracted. I can not guarantee that this will work. Best
If you mix using an Ultrasonic Emulsifier, you should be able to dispense with most of the air bubbles
hello, sir. if i have 1 kg of shells, can i still use it in 750 mL of NaOH 2 wt% solution? or is there a specific shell - solution ratio to be followed? thank you.
Hi, Unfortunately for 1Kg of shells 750 ml of NaOH 2% are probably not enough (I treated 15 grams of shell with 750 ml NaOH 2%). To try to use as less as possibile of NaOH I suggest to try to add at least 1 liter of NaOH 2% and then add more NaOH solution to wet and cover all the shells. I hope this helps.

Not safe, It should be done in a lab with suitable equipment. Like in the video. Also don't forget personal protection equipment (gloves, glasses, labcoat)

Hi,, you need to neutralize the chitosan by adding an acid (e.g. chloridric, acetic, lactic...). You can starting adding a small amount of diluted acid and then stirring and observing: at a certain point a gel of chitosan (strenght depending on the MW of chitosan) will be formed.

Dear, I my opinion the amine form can be better vs, eg, the HCl neutralized because you will not introduce Cl ions. On the other side, using the amine base form you have to check if the soil became more alkaline (but I think it does not). Best regards

Dear Annika, I did not try with mushrooms. Howeverr, I think that the procedure could work even if chitosan into mushroom is complexed with polysaccharides, e.g. in form of chitin-glucan complex. best regards
