    Hey Josh. Just purchased one of these D18 VT Adi used 2022 but was like new . Sounded really dead to me but arrived with not so great light gauge strings. Played it for a few days and changed out medium better strings for lights. Sounds better but......Unfortunately past my time to send it back. Was hoping the Adi top would open up soon. Wondering if I got a dud like your first one. Really like the neck but dry dead sound not sure I can get used to. Had a 2022 stand D-18 that had much more punch and brightness. Wondering if these guitars are made the standard bracing to replicate the dryer duller sound of the 1930 style.

    Guessing it's African Mahogany like Sipo or Khaya, not "genuine" like the standard series? Seems to cancel out some of the benefit from the VTS Adi top, value wise. Nut is 1-11/16 presumably? Annoying that GC doesn't make these things clear. Great sounding guitar and thanks for the video.. I think I'll stick with the standard series though.

    I had been eyeing the 64' pickups for a while now to put in my Fender Partcaster Tele that I was planning on building. Then today, I bought a Squier Affinity Telecaster, which the price had gone up again, but was able to get it at the price before the increase. I will also order a Fender neck at a later date for it. The prices on the 64' pickup has just gone up (again) to $209.99 + tax at Long & McQuaid and other Canadian Guitar store website (I live in Canada), so I saw Amazon had not increased it price yet, so I got it for $179.99 + tax. All this to say, I'm glad you made this video, because you put yours on a Squier as well, so this gives me an idea of what mine will sound like when I install the 64's n my new Squier Tele. After researching for the last 3 months for which pickups to settle on, the 64's were the ones I always keep coming back to. Glad I bought them and thanks for this video.

As much as i like this guitar, part of me wants a 'regular' Standard D 18 so they don't sound too similar. Do you ever play a Standard D 18 now and kinda wish you had the non-torrefied top? I love it for my 000 but think id regret it if All (both ) my Martin had the same sound to it. Cheers, thanks for the video.. Oh, i haven't played this one, but played the Special 28 of this guitar. Hi Josh, & Happy New Year. I have a 1988 USA Standard Telecaster, alder, rosewood board, 6 piece modern 'flat' saddles I play a wide variety of stuff from classic rock (not metal!) and blues to country, funk & jazz. I'm looking at both the Fender Pure Vintage 64's and the Fender 51 Nocaster pickups. I'm looking for that classic Tele sparkle & chime but it's also got to sound good for Country, funk etc. What's your take on comparing these pickups and which you think are better? I'd love you to do a demo of the Nocaster 51's and get your views on these.

    • @joshcarter617
      @joshcarter617 Год назад

      I used to have a set of the Nocaster pickups and I personally prefer them over the 64 pickups, but they were far brighter. To get a great bridge tone, I would have to dial back the tone knob a tiny bit, just so it wasn't too piercing. The neck pickup on the 51s to me had a "strattier" sound to my ear which I prefer. That being said, I do feel like the 64 pickups are a bit more versatile, even though to my ear I preferred the Nocasters. To me the Nocaster pickups have a brighter less full sound, but give that quintessential twangy Tele sound, while the 64s have a fuller, thicker sound, making them more useful for less twangy genres of music, but they still do the twangy thing. You really can't go wrong with either! Hope that is helpful!

      @@joshcarter617 Thanks Josh, really appreciate the prompt response. I don't know whether you've heard or played one but I also have a Harley Benton TE52NA which punches way above its price point, and I really like the stock Roswell pickups. These are bright & chimey but interestingly are Alnico V's. I suspect these are nearer the 51 Nocaster set tonally than the 64's. In reality, I appreciate that getting that balance between chime/sparkle with a bit more punch for rockier stuff is a tough one and will mean some compromise somewhere - no one pick-up can be perfect for everything. But I'm thinking it's perhaps easier to add a bit more gain and dial back brightness, than it is to add sparkle/chime. Would you concur?

    • @joshcarter617
      @joshcarter617 Год назад

      @@richardbirch5744 No problem! Yeah, those recent Harley Benton T style models that have come out are exceptionally good for the price. They do have quite bright pickups too, I would say closer to the Nocaster ones, just without as much clarity, but are still quite good. But yes, I agree with your statement. It is always much easier to take away treble than to add it. When it comes to these pickups and overdrive, to me the Nocasters just have a very old school rock sound and the 64s have a more modern sound, but still maintain that vintage sound too to some degree. You will certainly be happy with whichever you choose though!

      If you want your guitar to sound like a Tele, go with the 64’s. If you don’t like Tele tones but have one and want it to sound like a strat, go for the higher output pickups like the twisted Tele set, or some of the ones that brag about the neck sounding strat like.
