Got Condensation? Exhaust Hood Makeover
If I had the gamn dood emoji icon on RUclips I would be using it!!!
So have you had a chance to brew with it yet? Do you still get dripping condensation or did it fix it? I have a similar dilemma, i build a new house with a dedicated brewery and have yet to install some kind of exhaust system. Condensate hoods seem to be the best fit except for the price...
@@arneschmidt3445 Yep, sorry I didn't follow up on this! It made the dripping issue about 98% better, so definitely a win. Basically if I just wipe it down a couple of times during the boil it's good which is WAY better than before. I've since added a 65L BrewZilla that I run over by a window with a fan blowing the steam out the window, but when I do a smaller batch this has proven to be a big improvement. Thanks for watching!
Forgot to mention -- I also started doing 30 minute boils which helped too. Just have to up the hops accordingly to compensate for the shorter boil.
Cheers Matt! Thanks for the kind words! The experiment is a bunch of fun! I need to get my reviews chugging along to!
Thanks for the excellent beer Kurt!
They look great
@@AlmostAny1 Taste pretty great too. Thanks for watching!
I did the Citra kit and was also pleasantly surprised how good it came out. These kits definatly have a place. For me, I typcally don't brew much in summer. I live in southern Nevada and its just too hot in my garage. So when I saw these kits just had to try one. Will be purchasing again.
@@kegtapper09 thanks, another great use case for these!
I’ve done 2 flash kits so far and all in all I like them. If I had to pick one thing I’d like to improve it’s the sweetness I get with the finished beer.
@@CTP-bbq-HundHutte Do you mean you think the finished beer is a little too sweet? That was kind of my reaction as well, particularly with the I Heart IPA. I tend to like pretty dry beers though. If the I Heart IPA was a bit more crisp in the finish that would be a big improvement IMO but everyone's tastes are different of course.
@@irondalebrewing yes I think they are a little too sweet but they are still drinkable and for the amount of work that goes into them I will definitely keep trying them
Thanks
good video
@@martyandjamie thanks for watching!
If you are filling pet bottles just use a carb cap on the bottle. Purge with CO2 first by attaching gas and cracking the carb cap open a little. Leave the bottle under pressure, connect the liquid disconnect and crack the carb cap open a little to control the flow. Simple!
@@stripeyjoe Nice! Thanks for the suggestion!
Jerry's beer was good and did taste a little of the quik, but it was a good amount used I feel. Not too overpowering. However now you have me interested to try yours and see the difference haha. Cheers!
@@WreckedBrewery Yep! The amount and technique worked well. I'll apologize in advance for mine.
I tried this and my ball lock made an annoying quaking sound. Like the the poppet in the ball lock is vibrating and not fully opening.
@@tjschuldt197 Hmm that's odd. Have you tried a different ball lock post or disconnect? Could also be the post wasn't fully sealed maybe? I had one leak a little when the parts of the post weren't tightened up.
I just did the same kit and i had a slight issue with adding the full last two gallons. I ended up with 5-1/2 gallons in my fermenter with all the ingrediants. Especially after reading in the Flash Brew FAQ it says to top up to five gallons.
Interesting, thanks for sharing that! On the instruction sheets they have you add three gallons, then add the ingredients, and then add another two gallons, so it's interesting they have an FAQ that says to top the fermenter up to 5 gallons. You of course do lose a bit of volume from the trub so in the two batches I've done I found that if you use 5 gallons of water you wind up with pretty much exactly 5 gallons of finished beer, but seems like some consistency/clarity would be helpful. Thanks for watching!
Cheers! Interesting thoughts as usual with this run of vids. You’re going to finish them all first!
Trying all these great beers is such a tough job. :)
easier just to buy a fermzilla all rounder -if possible
Yep, I'm kind of incrementally headed in that direction, particularly since I have a couple of 7-gallon Fermonsters with no spigot and I was going to add a liquid post and floating dip tube to those. I've built a DIY Fermzilla at that point, although these still can't handle true pressure fermentation. When I first started doing things this way I was doing small (2.5 gallon) batches and the smallest Fermzilla is twice as big as I needed so modifying these smaller Fermonsters made sense, but now that I'm doing mostly 5-gallon batches I'm probably going to get an all rounder. That'll give me the ability to ferment under pressure and in theory that'll also make things a bit less complex since instead of having to swap out the blowoff tube for the SodaStream canister to do the cold crashing, I can hook all that up at the beginning of fermentation and just lower the temperature in the fermentation chamber to cold crash. I appreciate the nudge toward getting a Fermzilla -- thanks for watching!
I have the TapCooler which is pretty much the same thing. You may have figured this out by now, but after purging shove the bottle up into the seal and then press the purge button AGAIN to pressurize the bottle. Then, open the faucet, and since the keg and bottle are at the same pressure it shouldn’t even flow at all, this is when you open the PRV thing up, slowly at first, then once you have about 2-3 inches of beer in the bottle, slightly twist out to fill faster (the foam seems to only really happen at the beginning of the transfer). Very little foam and no O2, I’ve had even hazies last in bottles for months. Cheers!
@@GREEENZO Nice, thanks for the tip! That makes a lot of sense and will definitely work better than how I was doing it so I appreciate you sharing. I've since gotten a Rapt filler and Cannular canner but I'm sure I'll still have the need to do some bottles with the Nukatap filler, and this will help me do much better next time. Cheers!
Thanks for the kind words. This has been a fun experiment. I'm loving all the different ways to add strawberries to this wheat beer. Cheers!
Thanks for the beer -- really enjoyed it!
good video cheers

Thanks for watching, and thanks for the subscription!
When I did mine, I used a sanitized malt paddle to mix up the DME's "doughballs"...(my fermenter isn't so easy to pick up and shake)
@@brucecampbell8355 Nice! Since MoreBeer said you didn't need to stir I went "by the book" but I'm sure stirring can't hurt. This all reminds me that I think this batch is ready to taste now! And since I still haven't done a tasting video on the Citra Session Pale Ale I'll probably just combine the two. I'll be curious to hear what you think when your batch is done!
I just kegged a batch of this kit - tasted good coming out of the fermenter - we'll see how it tastes in a few weeks!
What is the tube minimum length say for 250cc beer bottles
@@michaelcatto8323 Pushed all the way in the stainless tube is 6 5/8" from the bottom of the silicone fitting. Adding the depth of the silicone fitting that goes into and over the top of the bottle, the total minimum length is about 7 3/8". Hope that helps!
good video cheers
👍🏻
Does the bag say what malts are in the DME
Kind of -- it says "North American 2-row barley malt blended with a touch of Carapils malt" but doesn't get more specific than that.
What if you used a spunding valve during fermentation? You could just set it to 1.5 to 2 psi which the fermonster can easily handle.
@@draculasdaughter36 Yep! You could definitely use a spunding valve instead of the blowoff tube, provided you have plenty of headspace so nothing would come through your spunding valve. I keep telling myself I'm going to take my blowtie spunding valve out of the box and try this so thanks for the reminder and motivation!
Good job Matt! Good job Bacon!
Thank for the kind words, glad you enjoyed it! I couldn’t agree more on the strawberry smoothie assessment.
I'm not sure if you need to use a filter on the smaller keg since you are pulling clear beer from the larger keg.
Good point! I just assembled all the pieces that came with the small kegs but definitely not needed for this use case.
Thanks for the video.
Great looking beer! I need to start reviewing these while they are still semi fresh heh. Cheers!
I’ve read most of Tasting Beer ages ago. I always thought it was odd that the BJCP scoresheets are ordered to consider appearance first. I usually do aroma, then back to appearance… but that backfires too if the head drops super quick. Anyway, I’m sure this is a fine beer!
@@FermentationAdventures a fine beer indeed!
High hopes for Nick the legend Lesogor
@@preuc3367 It's a fantastic beer!
@@irondalebrewing it looks delish!
Did your Flash Beer stall fermentation on the second day. Mine did. Little nervous. Brewed it on Monday September 1 and it’s stalled or done.
@@CraftBrew23 Mine didn't -- it definitely started fast and the visible activity in the blowoff tube subsided relatively quickly after about 3 days. Are you saying it's stalled because you're not seeing any airlock activity?
Have you noticed a benefit to this rather then the using a balloon, also what do you do to your blow off tube when this is setup do you have to remove it
@@stewbeats3171 This approach serves the exact same purpose as using a balloon so there's no real functional benefit, I just find it more convenient than messing with a balloon and getting the timing right on capturing CO2, though of course you could just fill a balloon with CO2 to avoid that part. Versus using the CO2 generated by fermentation this approach is definitely more "wasteful" but particularly if I'm moving my fermenter to another fridge to cold crash, I like the convenience and more direct approach of just applying a bit of gas. Once I'm ready to cold crash the blow off tube does come off, and I just replace it on the same ball lock with the CO2 setup. At the end of the day a balloon, or something like the Cold Crash Guardian, serves the same purpose. Hope that helps -- thanks for watching!
@@irondalebrewing thanks for the response!
@@irondalebrewing I was wondering why my fermonster had a gas valve on it, previous owner must have watched your videos! I think I’ll give the balloon a shot to save the co2 but I can use the gas valve to inflate my ballon now
@@stewbeats3171 I saw this modification somewhere on RUclips too -- I'm definitely not the inventor of it! :) I'm going to do a further mod I've seen other people do and add a liquid post with a floating dip tube since I have two larger Fermonsters that don't have a spigot. I'll do a video on that as well.
Interested in trying this one!
Interested in the follow ups and whether it gets skunked or not!
Yep, should be interesting! Based on MoreBeer's explanation since you're using those hop bites instead of boiling bittering hops that should avoid the skunking, but I had a REALLY hard time not throwing a towel or something over this to protect it from light. I'll be sure and report back in a future video!
Great video! I’ll be kegging the Irish Red Ale next Wednesday. Looking forward to the results!
I used to do something similar, but instead I'd use not just a gas post, but also a liquid post with a floating dip tube so i could pressure transfer to a keg when done fermenting (also didnt have a need for the spigot at the bottom so i opted to use a fermonster without a hole at the bottom). It would've been the perfect setup but unfortunately there is a issue with the fermonster lids, they eventually crack (yes, even when not using pressure) if they could solve that issue id switch back to them in a heartbeat. Ive since switched to using a fermzilla all rounder which is more pricy but also pretty versatile and has a far better lid for this kind of thing, only drawback is the inconvenience of not having a flat bottom and having to rely on the stand.
Thanks! I accidentally ordered another 7 gallon Fermonster with no spigot, and I have another solid lid and the parts (another gas post, a liquid post, and a floating dip tube, as you described) to get this rolling as a better configuration for transferring. Good to know this setup won't last forever and what you're using now -- I have a Fermzilla tri-conical on my list because I'd also like to dry hop with a hop bong as opposed to the sous vide magnet trick. Overall are you liking your all rounder? Still a bit on the fence between the all rounder and the tri-conical.
@irondalebrewing I love the all rounder, I'm using it well past the "expiration date" without issue. I wanted kind of a minimalist setup as I don't have a lot of room for storing fermenters and extra parts, the all rounder fit the bill for me. I do like the fermonster a lot but the lids are the weak point. (And I don't trust spigots on fermenters, they are difficult to fully clean and sanitize). When it's time to replace this I'll probably go with another all-rounder. I considered the kegmenter but I like to be able to see what's going on inside the fermenter from time to time.
@@itznolimitz Same -- I had a couple of stainless fermenters I got rid of because I like seeing what's going on. I'll see what I wind up with. :)
How do you like that kegland mini-regulator? I have an older style mini regulator that i can't find replacement parts for so thinking of investing in one of those.
I really like it! I have a couple of them and they work great. I will say the gauge it comes with is pretty hard to read (for me anyway) since it's small and I think is 0-60 PSI, so I'd recommend replacing the gauge with either the 15 PSI analog one (they also make a 30 PSI analog), or I'm using the digital ones which are cool. Some people have said the digital gauges can flake out in a cold environment (e.g., cold crashing) but I haven't had any issues yet. The regulator itself is really well made, and I really like the flexibility of the design since you can change the connection from the front to the side as needed, and use CO2 cartridges (either 16g or 74g, but the 74g requires an additional adapter fitting) or a SodaStream canister. From my use I highly recommend these little things, they're super handy!
Sweet
Wow, that turned out as a pretty good looking beer!
Yep, I was kinda surprised! Tastes pretty good too.
I have the same setup. Not a huge deal but your hose is full of air. I push in the plunger of the gas quick connect for a second or two to flush the lines. It’s a good setup but I do find that regulator REALLY finicky and those Kegland connectors hard to use with standard metal posts.
Good point, thanks! Every little improvement helps. Appreciate you pointing that out!
Thanks interested in these kits. Suggest to do one of their flash IPA kits. 👌🏻🍺
@@kricketdude thanks for watching! The next kit I'm doing is the I Heart IPA. Have you done one yet?
@@irondalebrewing No yet but planning on it!
Cheers! I agree, I think the approach you described is the way to go next time!
Nice. Looking forward to seeing how this all works out after you get it dialed in.
Cool!
You should do a side by side with Mr beer kit haha
@@Peanutbuttergalactic That might be interesting!
I like the blowoff idea with the ball lock. I never thought about it but I’m going to start using it. Thanks for sharing
@@CTP-bbq-HundHutte Thanks! It comes in super handy when moving over to cold crashing to avoid suckback since at that point I just swap the blowoff for a SodaStream canister to put 1-2 PSI on it.
Thanks for the recipe!! I love west coast ipa.
@@CTP-bbq-HundHutte sure thing, thanks for watching!
Always a great feeling when you formulate a recipe and it is darn close to what you were aiming for. Great Job!! CaraPils will help with head retention and provide some body, start with 5% of grain bill.
@@RiggerBrew Thanks for watching! It'll be even better next time. :)
@@RiggerBrew Sorry, I didn't notice the carapils part of your comment. I typically put carapils into nearly all my batches but was hoping with this one the white wheat might do that job, but yeah next time I'll throw that in the mix. I also just saw this crystal red from Briess that I may throw in (either that or Munich) to get some orange color going. homebrewing.org/products/crystal-red-malt-briess
