Unfortunately mass tourism in Thailand is a double-edged sword. It’s both hated and needed. As a 20+ year resident of Bangkok I simply avoid tourist areas and am rarely downtown.

Hardly slept last night… boarding the plane in 7 hours heading to beautiful spectacular Sydney. Love Chiang Mai but come on… There is so much som tan you can eat. I crave familiarity. I need to go home to my familiar haunts, have proper western food, get out of this stifling heat loaded with humidity. The other major thing is driving Haven’t driven in over 2 months…. Nice video, remember your previous ones. I’d actually booked the coach/ferry from Hua Hin to Samui but gave it a miss as it looked too much hassle. Just spent three years living in Hua Hin, but back in the UK for a holiday at the moment. First visited HH in 2010 and enjoy it as much as I always have. Currently live on soi 88 and soi 94 and that area is certainly where you’ll find a lot of expats. Happy New Year 👍🏻

The thing about , Hua Hin , is that the beaches arnt that great . Colour of the water is not great, and the months of Jan-March , air quality is hazardous due to the smokey season 🥴

loads of westerners (not just retired boomer generation-age 60-80) escaping the West and all it's problems , heading for greener pastures- Thailand is high on the list

Glad you came down to have a look. Im in Hua Hin at the moment and have been here since 24 December. It was extremely busy over the Christmas/ New Years period but things have settled down now. I personally dont think that it has changed much over the 17 or so years that I have been coming here. Yes, lots of people come down here on the weekends and especially long weekends. At the moment, lots of Europeans are holidaying here. The change to visa on arrival has also helped tourism i.e. 60 days instead of 30. I fly back to Australia at the end of the month so I might catch you in Samui when I'm there for two weeks just after Songkran.

Every Aussie beach suburb I've ever lived or visited eventually got crowded and pricey, there is only so much beach. Thailand of course will do the same thing, Samui is popular and well known so it will too. Traveled to Phuket 40 years ago, we hired motorbikes and rode around the coast, there was nothing there. Recently visited the Rayong beaches, very quiet, laid back and cheap. But not full of bars so more for couples and families. One day that too will probably be built out and crowded, but probably not for another couple of decades, as especially Mae Rumpheung is a very long beach.

Prices will go down again, also for long term rent, from April. It's high season, if landlords have a place available right now they rather rent it for short term to get more money. It's normal on a tourist island. Also the demand is higher than usually because of two major conflicts in Ukraine and Israel, this will also hopefully be over soon.

I first visited Samui in 1989 ~ the place is unrecognizable now.

Paradise island is no more.i was there in 1998 was beautiful, ive been back since 2018 to march this year and what a change, it is very sad,i like the old Thailand ,not busy✌🙏🏼

I recently went to Koh Samui, played spot the Thai. Not many, mostly migrant workers from Myanmar, Cambodia. Not many Thai tourists, Thai families etc. Too far and too expensive. Strangely, Pattaya/Jomtien is absolutely packed with Thai families and friends on the weekends especially long weekends. Easy to drive to from Bangkok and the surrounding industrial hinterland where large numbers of people live and work.. Koh Samui is a world class theme park designed, built and maintained for the international tourist market and it provides the authentic Thailand holiday experience as envisioned by the international tourist market. It is similar to Bali, Ibiza, Majorca, Phuket, Cancun etc theme parks, just with a "Thai theme", like Bali has a "Bali theme". 😂

I returned back to Thailand in mid-2024. I dont recognize it. But then again, if you leave a place for a year and return, it's changed. Stay or leave things chsnge. James bond put Thailand on the map, youtube finished it off. I avoid all tourist areas and tourists. So far, 30+ million people have visited thailand to date. Donthe math, saturated

Prices in Tourist areas are going to be more expensive to live than the west shortly even in other parts of Thailand hate to say the best days have long gone

I’ve been living on Samui on and off since 2013. Then you could ride you motorbike without fear of getting run over. We bought a house in Ban Tai in 2018 and the area has been evolving ever since. The infrastructure cannot support this out of control expansion on this island. They can’t even safely manage the disposal of trash properly. Last year we bought land in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Can’t wait to move there and get off this wretched island for good!!

reality is every previously nice place in south east asia is getting turned to shit by too many foreigners coming to escape the terrible conditions in western nations now...actually wherever...lots of africans and indians in Cambodia now...all south east asia getting flooded with expats from everywhere...lots more europeans and americans and brits and australians and also arabs and africans and indians...even latinos coming to settle and their nations are already cheap but way too dangerous so they come to south east asia...and even large numbers of other asians such as chinese and japanese and koreans flocking to thailand and cambodia to live long term and in lesser numbers to indonesia and malaysia and vietnam or laos and also philippines...myanmar too dangerous

Interesting!!!! Long term expat here in Chiang Mai. Same thing happening here in CM. The amount of tourists in CM already for Xmas/New Year is totally out of control. The traffic chaos is like BANGKOK. The Chinese have invaded CM buying up whole condo buildings, doubling the rents and only renting them out to Chinese. They are buying up commercial buildings, businesses, arable land, anything they can get their hands on. The precedent is being set with majority of accommodation rents doubling tripling in price. Sale prices are the same. It’s changing the whole CM low cost chill vibe ambiance. Like all the hotspots around the world that are finished, the word is out on CM now and it’s now being loved to its detriment. Every Tom dik and wanka are now coming to CM, bringing with them all their western AND eastern BS….. the glory days of CM are over, and in another 5-10 yrs CM will be just like Bangkok. All the utoobers and bloggers that espouse how good it is are only adding to its death knell. The more the shite hits the fan in the west, prices rising, societies collapsing, millions of people are exiting and resettling in Asia… and Thailand in particular. All over Thailand this western exodus is simply diluting and destroying the wonders of Thailand that we once knew…… Don’t get me wrong, Thailand, CHIANG MAI is home to me, but thinking now it’s time to go. It’s only going to get far far worse………….. PS I first went to Lamai in 1980…. There was ONE PLACE TO STAY ONLY, small bamboo huts built by an Aussie guy and his Thai wife. Food was banana jaffles, rice, fish, black tea and thai Buddha sticks…… it was cheap as chips and a real PARADISE.. I never went back as I found Chiang Mai that same trip….. it’s making me sad watching your video and feeling sad about CM, and Thailand in general….. as it’s MORE PROOF we are witnessing the decline of Thailand as we have known it. ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!!!!! Call it the inevitable progress, but the glory days are well and truly coming to an end….. Thailand will end up just like all the other dead end western cities that we all escaped from all those years ago…… Sad as it is, thank you for calling Samui out for what it is….. As countries pulled their populace out of poverty incomes have risen enabling others to travel and experience different cultures. Go to any tourist hotspot in the world and you will now experience rising prices and queues a mile long.
