Glad to hear such a good technical question...👍🏻 Answer to your question : when we see the section of installed batten from top ( Plan view) then X- asis becomes major axis & Y- axis minor . As we are looking for maximum load resisting capacity of Shuttering structure while doing concrete work , so we need to look for how we can get more stiffness . This shall be ensured when we calculate moment of inertia along X- asis as depth is more in this case Hope my answer clears your doubt. If not please revert , I shall explain it again in a video. Thank you for asking a very good technical question & so sorry for delayed response from my end. Yes you have rightly pointed out, explanation joints you will find :- 1. In case of boundary wall , expansion joint is provided both in sub-str. as well as in super structure 2. In case of buildings : Buildings will have common foundation ( raft) but expansion joint in super structure 3. In case of Non tower area : there will be an expansion joint in super structure but they may or may not have common foundation. Concepts can be discussed with more examples. Thank you for asking a very good technical question & so sorry for delayed response from my side Understand the concern of client,they generally expect a unit / room without any projection. But please try to understand such projection is due to structural requirement of the building. Usually column coming out the wall thickness may be oriented due to Bending moment distribution subject to column. So increase in dimension of column ( coming out of wall ) gives more stiffness to the column & hence increase the load bearing capacity. Yes , such projection may be dealt with some Architectural consideration to make unit aesthetic. Hope you agree with my points. Please try to understand the concept of staggered lapping of steel reinforcement - in case of retaining wall / shear wall we should ensure staggered lapping of steel on outer face & inner face (( It means we must ensure minimum gap i.e ( 0.3 x Development Length) to maintain staggered lapping)).
