Roaring deer

Walking in the park in the evening, I heard a loud, for the whole forest, alarming and at the same time fearless roar of some beast. As there are no large predators in Hamburg, it soon became clear to me that I was hearing the roar of a deer. Usually they are somehow afraid of people, but not this time. Enjoy the film.

    Thanks for explaining the gaff rig in such detail! I like it much more than the Bermuda, it's not only beautiful but simple in a hands-on way, it's "honest". However, watching you reef the mainsail makes me want a junk sail, which has to be my favorite for that reason. But, I just bought an old 25' gaff rigged spissgatter here in Norway, so I just have to get used to reefing a gaff sail 😊 I'd love to see more videos on the gaff rig. In any case, you have a new subscriber!

      Glad you like it! Gaff sails are for sure much harder to handle and also less effective compared to bermuda. But they are so beautiful that you just have to accept that we are not looking for efficiency or easy handling.

      @@Underbrownsails I agree with that. My mainsail should be small enough for me to handle, thankfully 🙂

    Why aren't these halyards rigged with a block and pulley so the effort is decreased by one-third?

    • @Underbrownsails
      @Underbrownsails 2 месяца назад

      Sure, throat halyard blocks give x3 effort and pick halyard x2 effort. I would say, the effort on throat is decreased by two-thirds minus some waste on friction.

    Joshua Slocum, who was the first person to sail around the World single handed, also says he sheeted his jib to the centre. Very good technique. I have also sailed in strong winds with the jib aback, as when hove-to, just to reduce power etc.

    I always loved being in command of a ship and having a well organised and safe way to “manage ship”, with practice it’s possible to do well but I am getting rusty now in mid life and an electric winch for the tougher jobs is really appealing! Looking forward to learning something new from you in future lessons. Fair sailing, SkipRay, Kenmare Bay, SW Ireland.

    How does the jib return the boat to a dead down wind course? Is it simply by pulling from the front? I really like your videos so far. What a great boat.

    • @Underbrownsails
      @Underbrownsails 3 месяца назад

      Yes, when the boat deviates from the downwind course, the jib gets some wind and returns the boat back. It can sail like this for hours if the waves are not too big.

    Nice work mate. What timbers is the boat made of I reckon I saw a little Huon Pine in the cabin. I notice you flying the Norwegian flag but is it a Norwegian built boat? There was a lot of Gaff rigged boats down here in Victoria and Tassie (Australia) so without seeing a side profile cannot see the style of boat. Thanks for sharing great videa. Subscribed!
