Beck Bio

Passing the torch to the new generation of biologists. Hi. My name is Amanda Beck and I am a biologist in southern California. This channel is for students and the public, but it is mainly for young biologists who have recently entered or are thinking about entering the California environmental consulting field. Experienced biologists who might need a refresher lesson on biological topics might benefit from this channel as well.
I started to create these educational videos in 2016 when I had to put my career on hold in order to take care of my autistic son. So that I wouldn't fall into a deep, dark, brooding depression, I started to make videos to keep my mind busy and active and to have a creative outlet. I've poured my heart and soul into this project. These videos have helped me and my mental health so much and I really hope they help young biologists and students too.
Enjoy and thank you for your support!

Ground Cover
Ground cover refers to any natural or organic material that lies on the surface of the soil. Ground cover may be composed solely of or as a mixture of botanical parts, rocks, shells, algae, and other organic debris. For plants specifically, ground cover refers to those that are dead, fallen, or otherwise not in their original growth position. It’s important to note that ground cover is distinct from plant cover, which refers specifically to the area of the ground surface covered by live or dead vegetation that remains in its original growth position (i.e., still rooted in the soil).

Same Wildlife Species, but Different Statuses Designations

Sometimes federal or state wildlife statuses or designations only apply to certain: populations, subpopulations, metapopulations, clades, units, locations or ranges, fish runs, and seasons. This allows resource agencies to apply environmental protections selectively to a lesser portion of a species' overall population. Two terms are often used in conservation biology to define specific groups o...

Thanks for the well explained and much detailed video
Yay awesome! I'm glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much madam.🎉
Good❤
One correction; Brown-headed Cowbirds are native to the west and central US. Their range expanded into the east. They are just far more numerous in CA than they were before.
My video just focuses only on Califonia and not the west in general. While the range of brown-headed cowbird has expanded to CA, they are not true natives and are consided invasive in California. Please see CDFW's page on the cowbird. wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/Invasives/Species/Cowbird
Can't believe why this channel is not famous 😢
Good
Good job, Amanda. It's always good to refresh the basics.
@@karenness5588 totally 💯
WOW! I graduated in Biology in 2001. I recall how it was difficult to get any information without resourcing to our library. and teachers showing off their cell phones, because they were the first to buy some. It was literally the Stone Age. Thanks for the video.
Getting u well
Thanq so many ch mam .superb explanation
Nice 👍 please explain in gujarati
I support and respect your courage . The contribution you are making through these videos are extremely helpful. Thank you and I wish you will continue the tradition for the welfare of future biologists. Even though there are not many views in your videos but remember the fact that the process of creating a history begins from the cave only where u are alone .😊 Thanks you 🙏

@@earth4u7888 I’m currently trying on zoology. They just take a long time to put together because it’s only little old me making the videos. Thanks 😊
Plz more videos on zoology. ♥️ from india
Soo nice explanation dear 💕💕💕💕💕
Very helpful!
Wow 😮😮🎉❤❤ I love it 💕
I love this video - ferns are my favorite plants and this is such a well made, professional overview , very good job. I do have one thing to say about lycophytes though - just because I also love paleontology - for sure, modern lycophytes are all small, but during the paleozoic there was the order lepidodendrales (which i think are probably most closely related to spikemosses?), which could get enormous, i think some specimens are estimated at like 130 ft tall. I don’t think they had true wood though, more of a stiff stem like structure. It’s not necessarily a criticism that you didn’t include them in the video, I just think that they’re cool.
I did not know that. I’m no lycophyte expert or anything, but thanks for sharing.
Superb
Thanks 🤗
Most useful video
Louder n clear
i dont understand the problem or the science behind it or know how much sense proposed solutions make. im sure there are situations where it doesnt matter if invasive species are grown, like in a pot on your property where it will never spread anywhere
Ecosystems are very delicate and introducing new species threatens all of it. Plants, pollinators, animals etc can be affected by just one new species being introduced. It can also be even worse than just the flower not being right for local pollinators, eucalyptus for example has oil that spreads in the soil and makes it so other plants can’t grow, it also burns like gasoline which makes wildfires worse.
A lot of invasive plants that have spread widely like crazy have started as pet plants. To answer your question.
Bottom line these don’t do anything for local pollinators and wildlife and instead take resources from the plants that do help the ecosystem, and end up growing rapidly.
@@valiant_to_vile makes sense. in terms of actionability, i may tell others and also manicure my property (to benefit my pocketbook and make my dream garden by careful native plant selection), maybe do more if i have time (like community level)
@@joelschmierer3544 that’s good!! Grass lawns waste so much water and aren’t as pretty as flowers. Any property you manage or any property manager you know please inform them! You’ll be doing a very good deed even just raising awareness is important. For those of us without property or maybe HOA lawn rules, we just carry around a spice jar shaker with some native seeds and spread them where we go haha look up guerilla gardening.
Great detailed video Very informative Very professional Thank you
Great video!
First of all thank you for all the videos you publish. I do field recording so this one is good to have an overall overview of biophony. Nowadays we could add a parameter which is the presence of human disturbance. How are biophony and antropophony related, how do animals respond to the loudness of traffic for example, how can whales and others keep their communication with that much of sound pollution coming from boats as sound travels more freely in water. And there is the part of sound that we humans simply do not hear: ultrasound. I have many ultrasound activity in some recordings that are not in the human hearing range. This can be pitched down but I like to keep it the way it is and accept the flaw in our hearing capacities. Again keep up the work you do. I came here for the ferns and now I have been looking at several videos!
Awesome !! Thanks so much. I’m no expert in in this sub field but what you said is interesting 🤔
Can you upload more videos of botany for example - related to Anatomy, Morphology, plant physiology. Thnks for this video, excellent work. Regards - Rajesh ( from India🇮🇳)
Well I’m not a botanist, but I’ll see what I can do. 😊 thanks
the first one on comment,it is very teaching i appreciate you with subscribing!!!!
Awesome, thank you so much
Im a gymnosperm ally!

I like moss.
Now I understand the plant world so much better.
Awesome 😎
These Beck Bio videos are terrific: concisely informative, visually rich, and entertaining. Please continue making them.
Thank you for the compliment! I definitely will. 😊
I thought ferns were polypodiophyta so I looked it up and it's saying pteridophytes includes polypodiophyta, as well as lycopodiophyta, and equisetophyta. I've never heard the term "pteridophyte" before. Thank you for sharing. They didn't say anything about psilotophyta. Would that be included in pteridophytes?
Nevermind, you answered that question at the end of the video😊 I'm surprised your channel doesn't have more subs. I really love your style. No music l, no pretentious intro, and not trying to win people over with editing and charm, and tangents about your day, just getting right to the point and sharing information. That is exactly what I look for in informational videos. As you must be aware, it's not very common to encounter that style of video creator. I appreciate that you respect your audience. That, and everything I mentioned above is why I subbed.
@@noeditbookreviews oh man…you made my night! 😊 Thank you for really nice comments. It meant a lot to me.
