Chronically Curious
Добавлен 13 сен 2014
Hullo! I’m Amara, and I’ve had chronic pain since 2002. I’ve been through the wringer, but I’m slowly in the process of getting my health back, and I’m hoping to document that. I also happen to be a healthcare provider part time and I think having the perspective of both the patient and the caregiver is an interesting one. It might give other people with chronic pain a peek behind the curtain they wouldn’t otherwise have.
I also plan on living up to my name and posting a few things I simply feel really curious about, because it boggles my mind that more people don’t know about them or talk about them. Why not!?
I have another channel, AmaraJordan, where I post One Shots, which are music cover videos without post-production to tweak my singing and playing of the piano or harp. I sit, I play, that’s what I get. I hope to evolve and look back and see how my improvement has come along. They’re fun hobbies I picked up while sick; I may as well use them!

The Power of Placebo (A Brief Reading) - Research Update
I fully intend to go into the placebo effect in much more detail and outline how it impacts peoples’ health and could improve quality of life. However, I’m at my mother-in-law’s for Christmas, and a full video was beyond me this week! I wanted to share some of what I’ve found, with interesting and exciting possibilities for the average person as well as the chronic pain patient!
The specific portions I read are all found (funnily enough) in the book Fast, Eat, Repeat, by Gin Stephens. I’ve been gathering notes about the placebo effect and ran across this and just wanted to share it!

The Danger of Christmas Cookies - Life Update Chronic Pain Vlog

So, instead of not posting for the first time since I started the channel, I figured I’d level about why I’m not posting what I’d planned. I’ve been doing so well lately that I don’t want to “complain,” about my flare, but it also makes it a bit more disturbing when a flare like this happens, because it’s stopping me cold. I’m just lucky the timing isn’t worse, when I physically need to be at s...
30 Day Walking Challenge - The Vlog

I’ve had chronic pain for 19 years and only in the last year have I gotten enough momentum to try something like this. But because I’ve seen such progress, I was really curious to see what effects I’d see if I walked every day. I started at 15 minutes and went up to 30 minutes. I was pleasantly surprised at the results! I have a longer video discussing the reasons why walking can be helpful, es...

There have been several accounts I’ve been told throughout the years that have haunted me. Given the feasting and celebration going on, this felt timely. It is important to remember that even as ill as we may be, there are others who are suffering in different ways. Chronic Pain Holiday Survival Guide

The holidays can be a great time with supportive family members and rockin’ food. But it can also be isolating and take a tremendous toll on our physical and mental health. I’ve broken down a few stress-inducing categories and ways to maybe get around some of the anxiety this time of year can provoke.
Chronic Pain Meditation with Guided Imagery
Просмотров 9Год назад
One of the things I learned in an intensive physical therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy program was how to meditate despite hurting. It was difficult and took weeks to get down without feeling frustrated, but once I got accustomed to it and found my rhythm, my anxiety went down, my pain was easier to deal with, and I slept better. I wanted to share this in the hopes that it might help som...
Quitting Sugar Helps Chronic Pain?
Просмотров 272 года назад
I’ve gone back and forth about cutting out added sugars for a long time and now with added evidence against sugar, it’s time to put my affairs in order and just kill the sugar addiction. It might work wonders, it might not, but it’s better to know than always doubt if it may have made a difference. I hope the video and the info on the impacts sugar can have on people, especially those in pain, ...
Autumn Hit Me in the Face - Chronic Pain Update

Every autumn, I have an issue with increased pain and fatigue. The time is upon me! This video wasn’t planned, but I decided to go ahead and be honest about my experience and share some things that are useful to me, as well as why people tend to experience more pain during cold weather.
Why (Most) Pain Scales Suck & Need Change
Просмотров 102 года назад
This topic has been on my mind for at least 15 years. It’s frustrating when a tool that should help clarify your pain adds to confusion and, even worse, can lead to a loss of trust between a care provider and patient. We take a look at some pain scales that absolutely suck, to the mediocre, and one that I’m in love with. Topics also touched on are the stress cycle, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy,...

18 Years a Patient - My Journey with Chronic Pain
Lol why is this so relatable
Hey Amara! Found your channel through that one comment on the memory foam pillow Scott Cramer video! Between the music covers on your other channel and the health insight on this channel - I’m happy to have found your content! Fibromyalgia and any chronic conditions can feel like they take all control away from your life, so I feel like videos like these are invaluable for helping people get through it! Thank you for sharing your experiences and advice!
Thank you! Who knew a pillow comment would lead to this rabbit hole you’re in! 😅 I feel like… it’s so easy for people with pain to feel really isolated, because the nature of chronic pain leads to us receding from public life more, but I think we can still find strength in other people’s stories. I may not reach many people, but I hope I can do some good in this world, at least! Thanks for the kindness, and thanks for being here! 😊
@@ChronicallyCurious RUclips rabbit holes are one of the best parts of the platform! Yes I completely agree that stories do so much work to improve the lives of people struggling. If there’s any justice on RUclips, then it’ll help spread your videos to others trying to find them! I used to do RUclips myself before I got unwell, and thankfully I got lucky in finding an audience within smaller niche communities, so I hope you can achieve the same thing if you keep making videos on these kinds of topics!
@@Evanz111 Thanks! Maybe it will reach people. I’m kind of leaving it up to the algorithm Gods at the moment. 😂 But I hope that some people who need to see them will find their way to them. I hope you are able to continue with your channel and have more good days than bad!
I Love this stuff! It is very exciting to realize that so much of our experienced reality begins in our brain. Very intriguing to think deeply on that. Thank you for sharing 😊.
Your perception is your reality!
It is good to see another video from you. Even if you are in the ups and downs of chronic pain. I am sorry to hear that you are so painful. It is so frustrating. Be easy with yourself. My heart warmed when you talked about the women decorating cookies together with you. School is amazing for your brain. Taking on counseling is huge. Go gently with yourself. You are doing A Lot. When I overthink things or am mentally frustrated with my body and want answers, dang it. I call it going down the rabbit 🐰🐇 hole. Eventually I come out. Life is interesting. Thank you for your video, and I honor you for being vulnerable.
Thank you so much! I figured… it was better to just be honest than going silent. I’ve made that mistake too much in my private life to repeat it here! I am trying to be as kind to myself about things as I would be to a friend. My Mom taught me that. “If they deserve the support, so do you.” So, I’m trying. I just sometimes can see my expectations so clearly that when they don’t work out, it bursts my bubble and I have to get a new plan! Thank you so much for your time, your kindness, and your continued support! It means a lot to have someone who has seen several videos and returns, and takes the time to comment! 😊 I really appreciate it!
I am proud of you. I know, from personal pain experience, how hard this is. 😵💫 Walking is a big push for me too. I do feel much better when I walk, even though it hurts. I support you!!! 😊😊😊 P.S. you look great without makeup on. I Love Clouds! Nature is my jam.
Thank you! I actually just got back from a walk! Took a few days off because I have family over, and I feel like crap, so, I escaped the hubbub to go for a walk. 😅 And thank you! I was unsure of involving that clip in the vlog, but since it showed the logistics of juggling trying to add the walk in, I decided it was worth it. Yeah, that sky was unreal! The camera couldn’t capture how amazing it looked. Awesome day! 😁 Thanks for watching, and the support! 🌻
I like the combo of this with the longer sit-down video going into detail. Where's the link though?
I hope the vlog added something different that I couldn’t really capture in the original video. And you can find it here: ruclips.net/video/u4zuIzeY6mE/видео.html
“I need to rest after I’m active, like a cheetah,” is random, but… accurate? But they chase at high speeds. 🤣
And when you make the holidays are better for you, they are better for those who love you!
☺️ Thanks! I do try my best. 😊
This is super interesting and very helpful.
I came across your channel today. This video really hit home for me. I too have chronic pain and a serious sugar habit/cravings. This video has given me a lot to think about! Thank you for posting this.
I’m glad the video was useful for you! I’ve been doing a lot of research about inflammation and its effects on the body, especially for people with chronic pain. While we can’t completely prevent it, we can work on certain aspects to reduce its impact. It’s going to be really hard to not have sugar, but hey, at least I’ll document it, and maybe that can be useful for someone too! 😊

Good discussion. If only ER nurses could remember admin is only one aspect of their job and be more attentive to pain. I've been asked to fill out forms with two shredded hands, while on another occasion was expected to calmly wait my turn with a kidney stone, which, on your Koski (spelling) scale I rate as a 9 (I've experienced a 9.5 too, but won't bore with details.)
First, I’m sorry that you went through those experiences; that’s awful! And secondly, having someone write when their hands are injured is just… not a practical idea, on top of it being incredibly painful. It’s like trying to get someone who almost bit their tongue in half to tell you their history and medication allergies. 🤦🏻♀️ I feel like a lot of people in various areas of the medical field just don’t… know what to do about pain. It’s glossed over quite a bit. I’m going to do a video about it at some point, but there’s less than two weeks of training on dealing with chronic pain in all four years of med school, and if you don’t do an ER rotation, you are less likely to honor how much pain can incapacitate someone. You have to see the horror, kind of, because they DO NOT teach it. It’s seen as an anomaly, which is strange, because so many people have chronic pain, and so many illnesses present with pain. Before, they could just kind of throw narcotics at the problem, but now with the opiate crisis, they’re more distrustful and less likely to give medical aid for pain, more so to women and people of color (there’s a study about how people were believed when it came to cardiac pain that I’ll discuss in that video I’m thinking of doing). They’re taking away tools to help cope with pain, without replacing them, while not even understanding what kind of pain the person has, because they don’t even get a baseline pain scale correct most of the time! It’s absolutely bonkers! Thanks for swinging by; I truly appreciate your feedback and involvement. 😊
