Still have my issued ones in the loft from a winter Bosnia tour in '96/97. Different Goretex outers. Plain olive/ grey colour IIRC, that don't come as far up the arm. There was also a white wool wristlet.
Ok, still have my original issue one and i consider essential kit both as rainwear and as a shelter. In fact I’ve just ordered another mint one for around 30 quid but shock horror these are going for absolutely silly £ now. So guessing these will become very tricky to source. Bulletproof but yes a little heavy but remember how good it is on a wet evening especially if you fix 2 together. This video didn’t show it worn in poncho mode over top of a bergan… but it can. Get one whilst you can.
Granted little heavy, but lighter than a rain jacket and Basha combined. Ideal weight and size for the minimalist however. My channel is only to show case kit, with no personal opinion given. Viewers can make their own mind up given all the stats.
Good piece of kit Bex , thanks for sharing, YAH bless mate !
Thanks mate
Happy New Year, really enjoy your video’s
Glad you like them!
Best waterproof jacket ever
Thanks for your work, Bex ! I remember in the 90s in France a few surplus stores were selling a DPM "kit/bum roll" from the British Army, made by SASS, to carry the basha and poncho over the PLCE pouches. It was very similar to the pattern 58 bum roll, but made of cordura and camo. Was it ever issued ? This piece of gear is so rare, I'm thinking about making one by myself.
I have a non issue basha bum roll in MTP demonstrated on the (Main channel) Mine fits great on my Jay Jays webbing order.
The pcs LIGHTWEIGHT thermal smock is not a softie replacement, but a different garment completely. Hence their new nickname is 'buffalo' not softie. The softie replacement is titled, "pcs thermal jacket" which is more akin to the softie as it's an insulated jacket with smooth lining, not a fleece lined smock with no thermal insulation. Lots of people complain that the fleece lining makes it difficult to get on and off, but I'd argue it's user error as it's designed, as you said, to be worn alone or just with a fitted base layer
The army did not issued the softies for dessert war ware, issued garments were these PCS. "Buffalo" is a company that makes (Aquatherm Fleece Lined Smocks) Buffalo was never issued to the army. I have reviewed the Buffalo Special 6 Shirt as a matter of fact.
there are two versions - short and long flap ones
Thanks Bex. All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧🍂🍁
Good piece of kit Bex , thanks for sharing, YAH bless mate !
Thanks 👍
Excellent cap, I just bought one of those last week and its warm, waterproof and very comfy also got the version with just the single ear flaps too
I’ve got a pair of these 👍
👍
Perhaps you could sew a kangaroo pocket
I have the Buffalo Special 6 smock which already has a Kangaroo pocket. I only showcase original kit on this channel.
Do they just come in camo or do they do black too?
great review mate, any links on where to get them
Good review Bex , thanks for sharing, YAH bless mate !
Swear by the softie trousers for staying warm, nothing else like them.
Hi mate long time no speak lol. How's your back mate??
So the green softie is just another version of the pcs thermal smock? I thought it would have a polyester wadding rather than inner fleece lining.
Thank you for the video and specially converting inches to cms😊
Spent many nights under these poncho’s back in the early eighties, 3 years as a cadet and another 3 as a TAVR infantry soldier, very robust brilliant bit of kit . It was part of the 58 webbing set and was carried in poncho carrier we use to call a ( Bum Roll) which was worn below the kidney pouches at the rear of the soldier, hence the name. Airborne troops had a tendency to wear their bum roll above the same pouches, which was a preference of mine, as it made the webbing more snug to the body when running with.
Cheers, I was about to buy the Softie version but I just want them for winter wild camping and probably sleeping in inside my bag if it gets that bit colder.
Had mine a long time bought it brand new. Use to use it a lot to wear in wet weather but then the pu coating started to peel off after only few years making it useless in wet weather so only occasionally use it now as a ground sheet.
The five presstuds at the bottom of the Poncho are for attaching to the presstuds at the bottom of the 58 pattern sleeping bag. Making a bivvy system 😊.
Yep used it that way in the Dutch army in 89/90 ....only the Dutch Marines had these poncho's. We in infantry had the WW2 model raincape so i bought one in a army navy store
The strip of 5 stud poppers at the bottom of the poncho are to attach it to a sleeping bad
The Poncho was a good piece of kit, though no one was ever allowed to use it as a Poncho, only as a Basha!
I was lucky to get too of 58 poncho about three years ago ,still going strong .I use it for my tarp good bit of kit
Hi this awesome Item i got the trouser i ❤ it. I try to make a ultra Light Winter equipment. A Backpack Max 10kg. For Marsching or Hiking. I payed 29.95€😊 Greeting form Germany.
I used my old issue one last year in a rainstorm and was soaked in seconds 😎😎 yours looks like a brand new buckshee 😎😎🍺🍺 I’ve now got the Snugpak patrol poncho. Cheers bud.
Could be a nice wee sleep suit in winter for us hotbodied folks, and I like the sidezip idea for pocket access.🤘🙂
I bought a surplus new old stock and the studs are used to attach it to a 58 pattern sleeping bag
Great bit of kit, I’ve got two
Poppers at the tail are for connecting to the 58 sleeping bag
Poppers on the bottom to connect to the 58 patern sleeping bag to make a bivvy

I paid $25 US for mine "used" even though it was brand new. Turned mine into a field trauma/medical kit. Thinking about getting one or two more for another LBE project.
Those aren't mag pouches, They are pouches for spare filters for the GSR
NO ITS NOT. I MOLLIED THAT POUCH ON, IT DIDN'T COME WITH ANY POUCHES. THE SPARE CANS HAVE THEIR OWN HOUSING INSIDE THE FIELDPACK THE POUCH I PUT ON WAS FROM THE SA80.
certainly the first time ive seen that being worn that way. most of the time, its thrown under the top flap of a bergan, or strapped on with the waist and leg strap. usually never gets used for anything other than the GSR
THE GSR FIELD PACK HAS MOLLE TO ATTACH TO THE FRONT OF BODYAROUR OR BELT ORDER. CHECK OUT THE LINK TO FACT CHECK YOURSEL.talesfromthesupplydepot.blog/2017/08/24/gsr-haversack/ As I clearly said in the video, it can be repurposed for the hobbyist (Such as metal detecting) was my example.
Got one a few years ago. Id like to get it to ride without hanging away from the belt.
As I said in the video, try threading the webbing strap thru the D loops of the GSR bag.
Hi Bex, hope you are well. I have one of these. I find it great to hang from the chest strap D rings of your ruck sack with a pair of carabiners, as a chest pack/ rig. Helps to balance you out, too, and easy to detach when needed. All the best.👍🏾😉🇬🇧
Great idea.
If you don't mind me asking we're did you purchase your belt and yoke set up 👍
Mostly car boots. But the platform belt is (Osprey) mine. from years ago
Good piece of kit Bex , thanks for sharing YAH bless mate !
You bet
One of the best bags. Backpack or EDC... I have three as a hip belt with the yoke. A lot fits in there.
I have seen three on on belt before on Yt. Great piece of kit.
Hi bex, wondering what happened to your channel... How's ya back doing mate.?? Great to see you again 👍😎
The main channel is still there airing videos every Friday, but is due end very soon, & replaced by 2 other sister channels, with (Surplus Only) being one of them. bexbugoutsurvivor is filmed a year in advance, and I haven't filmed anything for many months now, and when the remaining episodes are aired the channel will close. My back is ok but on very strong meds with heavy side effects. The second part of the social experiment will restart bexbugoutsurvivor in October 2025 with 36 episodes, and the more familiar (bexbugoutsurvivor) content moved to membership or Patreon. OTHER CHANNELS I OWN. bex-treks (Lightweight camping) bexbugoutsurvivor (Original ideas) none mainstream thinking. Surplus Only (Military kit) displayed without personal opinion. An announcement will come soon to all subscribers.
Hi Bex. Hope you are well. These boots were really common, in the early ‘80’s. I bought a couple of pairs for beach fishing down Chesil in Dorset. Great boots for shingle, as nothing would get caught in the treads. I probably only paid a fiver for them back then as, like you say, they were not the comfiest of boots, but fine if you just wanted something to throw on. Hope you are well, all the best.👍🏾🇬🇧
Good video Bex , nice find , thanks for sharing YAH bless mate !
