George Lucas was the chief editor on the original Star Wars. He oversaw the entire process and edited the acclaimed gunport sequence himself. His wife Marcia only edited a third of the movie and left to work on another movie before the final edit was even completed. There were two other editors who edited the other 2/3 of the movie. There has never been an unedited film or book that has been truly good. There may have good elements, but they always, always need edits. It's not a Star Wars tradition... it's a publishing tradition.

I'm a bit dubious about the "saved in the edit" narrative concerning Star Wars. I don't mean to devalue the contribution of Marcia Lucas, the editing and pacing of Star Wars is tremendous, but it seems to me that she was doing what she was meant to do: editing the movie. The suggestion almost seems to be that no movie ever had an editor do cuts, call for reshoots or insert b-roll footage and ADR, that the film just rolls out the camera already made and edited by the director, thus Lucas is a bozo who was rescued by his wife. Personally speaking, I think that Star Wars was a "lightning in a bottle" type situation and that there was a lot of lucky breaks but there is a whole load of talent in there as well, including both Marcia and George, not to mention the whole cast, John Williams and all the talent at ILM. What should be judged is the final film that was released, which was a masterpiece of its time. This is one of the reasons why I dislike George's subsequent tampering with the film and his refusal to release a theatrical cut; it does a disservice to the work of all the people who worked on that film. Which leads us to the Acolyte. The shocking thing about the series is that it was released in the state that it was and not subject to subsequent edits. It is obvious that there are issues with pacing, dialogue and plotting. One would think that there were some people working at Lucasfilm who have some experience working on film who could have spotted these. In the end up the failure to do a decent edit seems to plague nearly all the Disney Lucasfilm productions, so I would suggest that there is some issue in production - maybe related to the demands of streaming platforms or franchise mentality or possibly just the fundamental corporate culture in Disney - which makes the production of quality film not the priority.

As an editor with a 25+ year career in TV and beyond, I can surmise what happened with The Acolyte with a +/- of 5% of correctness... Leslye Headland was given free reign to write & shoot what she wanted and then everything broke down, most likely in the edit room when K Feige and K Kennedy took a look. They probably felt the show was off the rails... I know there were extensive reshoots of this show which is why the budget for this show was $180M plus more for the marketing events. I know (from personal experience) that Disney has a real problem with managing their creative projects and this issue is well known in the industry. This project was silently taken over by Feige to "fix" the show... But it was too far gone for him to do so. That's why the show comes across as oddly paced and confused with its own direction. Leslye Headland is not a good creative for this type of Star Wars based show and Kathleen Kennedy should have rooted this before it went off the rails.

Thanks for the video, currently downloading the fan cut and I will be watching it tonight. Overall I did not have such a negative response to the series as others on RUclips and Like you, I felt if it was directed and edited correctly it could of released with a warmer response. I think this is going to open up a rabbit hole of fan edits and to that, I thank you again.

Yeah the Corcoran edit does fix up the story quite a bit. I do wish the lines about getting sick at hyperspace were cut. I do agree that it at least makes the stoicism of Osha seem a bit reasonable.

If you edit shit, it’s still shit

Bad editing can definitely make or break a film. Many directors once they find an editor/s they trust and work well with they stick with them. An example that comes to mind is Quentin Tarantino who used Sally Menke as his editor until she passed away in 2010. I didn’t know this then but I noticed his films after that felt different to me. As for Star Wars, there are things I enjoy about the prequels and things I don’t (I’m looking at you Jar Jar) but I think not having the same editing team shows. George is a big ideas guy and Marcia, Paul and Richard helped stitch them together into a wonderful story. I’m also reasonably sure Carrie Fisher could have improved all the Padme /Anakin scenes. Romantic dialogue is not his strong suit.😁

As someone who mixes paint for a living, reds/pinks are some of the hardest colors to match. It will be less noticeable when they’re not on screen together. Besides they also look nice on you.

Your fantastic content about The Corcoran Cut is further proof that Kathleen Kennedy should be fired and to take Iger with her. Kennedy is ill equipped to handle Lucas Films and it shows.
