In this episode I repair a common problem with these first generation SLKs, Rusty Front wing bracket. Mine had rusted clean off so a full replacement was necessary. I used my MIG welder and my new wings, headlights, and old bumper to line up the bracket. I show the differences between the original Merc headlights and the aftermarket headlights and why I prefer the newer look

In this episode I conclude the rust patch repair on this car with my most complex repair yet! I use one piece of 1.2 mm sheet steel to match the hole in my sill. I use an angle grinder with a metal cutting disc to remove the rusty material, and then a MIG welder to weld the new piece in. In this episode on my Mercedes SLK BRABUS' restoration we are tackling the rust caused by the car being lowered too far and getting some sick rims. I used a mig welder, a grinder with a metal grinding disc, and an 80 grit flap disc. I am still learning so any suggestions just drop them in the comments!

Wait bro !! Did you put primer straight over rust areas ? You should have used a rust treatment like Ospho, then prime it and paint it final a clear coat for final protection. I'm doing rust treatment on my Mercedes E320 wagon. Thanks for vid.
Yes we did, my bodywork guy advised it would be okay providing I removed enough of the rust with the grinding wheel. 2 years on and everything is still okay. I had never heard of ospho but it looks like a good product. Good luck on your e320 project!! Love those cars

Hi, I owned the same car like yours and I ever owned 5 SLK230 ‘s including regular , AMG, Brabus versions. The Brabus version has the biggest horse power. However, I couldn’t find any information why Brabus version has bigger power than others. Can you shed some light or let me know where I can find the documents? Thank you very much. Peter
Hi Peter, thank you for your question! Wow, you really are a fan of the SLK. Which was your favourite spec? If they were all slk230s from what I understand the standard and AMG trim models are mechanically the same, depending on the year where a small 5 horsepower bump was provided to the engine due to the magnetic pulley being removed from the supercharger in 2000 and being replaced with a boost bypass valve. The brabus has a smaller pulley, wider exhaust, and possibly upgraded intercooler allowing more power production on the 230 engine. Where do you order brand new parts from please? I have a R170 and I am looking for some parts.
Local official mercedes dealer was normally cheapest, just get in contact with their parts guys and they will help you find the correct bits. If they are un-available from there, eBay, autodoc for new or breakers yard for second had used parts. Hope this helps!

Hi mate.Wonder if there is an option to repair old wings?Mean front corners?
Hi, for sure you can, and that was my original intention. But once I had seen how the was no bracket left on the wing , and the amount of filler I'd need around the arches I concluded new wings were more time efficient (I think I mentioned how much they cost me in ep2). As my car body was also missing the bracket I wanted to remove as many unknowns as possible so the fitment when I put it all back together would still be somewhat reasonable. If your car still has the brackets on the body, you can make a cardboard template and weld fresh metal onto any good remaining metal on the wing.Then hammer it to the right angle and drill the holes to meet her body bracket. If you just have surface rust around the arch you can check out the episode where I sand back and use filler on the rear arches. Thanks for your comment and I hope this helps.

paint job does not match with rest of the car
Yes, the paint is not a true match, with the rest of the car being duller. I did paint in the mercedes brilliant silver paint code which is what it came from the factory. I have not yet polished the untouched panels which I imagine makes this discrepancy worse. The only way to get a true match would to be paint the whole car in one go. As I did not have the compressor size, facilities or time for this I had to settle for a touch up. Thanks!

Hi, I am afraid the body kit came with the car. I did have a quick search to find a value, but the only parts I could find were sold a while back. It is called BRABUS R170 body kit. Good luck!

I too inherited a 1997 slk r170 a couple of years ago, and finally got it up and running this summer. Hi there, thank you for watching! I may have a brake disc change video coming out soon, and then gearbox and supercharger oil change videos. The suspension is definitely on the way out so I may just replace or take out the wishbones and get them powder coated filming it all!

I got mine from kontakt@mb-motorsports.eu I believe there are others on the market now if you search r170 wing brackets into Google, but these don't look as good.
Are you going to be restoring the crappy paint used on the interior?
Personally, I am impartial to the look of the paint vs the colour when it's all pealed off. I will probably just wait untill it all comes off. Right now the patchyness doesn't look great.
Hey, you can add the vacuum adjustment to those. You might need to make the rods yourself or maybe your headlights came with them. Then drill a hole and use the light range adjuster from the original headlights. I could send you a link if you're interested. Also bear in mind that, as far as I know, those are not made for a specific market (LHD or RHD) so they won't be optimal.
