Wood Made Here
Канада
Добавлен 6 авг 2019
A small Canadian company finds a fun way to enjoy the harsh cold winters by sourcing, cutting and drying high quality slow growing woods for musical instruments. With a rich history, built on three generations of sawyers this little sawmill is home to a massive collection of woods used in all sorts of stringed instruments. Everything is produced using a small sawmill, and a fleet of wood slicing, chopping, lifting, and grinding machines. Unlike other mills this one is powered by a 20kWh off-grid hydroelectric generator, and a handful of gas generators.
David, eagerly taking the helm of the business from his father, Gordon, in 2019 began prototyping all sorts of eclectic products: cedar saunas, wood speakers, and large piles of wood chips. Research and development quickly escalated. One day, a container arrived from Germany carrying a 2-tonne, computer-controlled, self-feeding, wood stove.

I'm still in the experimenting phase right now, but believe it or not if you go get a bucket of old organs and intestines and blood and guts from the butcher shop it will jump start a pile very quickly, you just.need to make sure it's got plenty of air and water, I personally rotate it with the tractor once or twice a week. This works especially well when you have mostly wood chips. Also I think 160f to 165f degrees for compost is perfect, it's just like cooking pork. You want to get it hot enough to kill of any bad bacteria and parasites. And also sterilize any left over seeds from plants and grasses. If you can pump air and water through the pile to control it you'd have it made
Is this kind of woodwork something one can do for a living?
If you compete maybe. There are some competitive events. Other than that just RUclips maybe. Ha
@@MountainVoiceInc Then, what are we doing here? Preserving culture, practices that don't actually have a place in society - no offence, that feels kind of pointless, unpurposeful.
@@xCorvus7x This a local historic event we run once a year, consider it more of a participation museum. History holds value, plenty we can learn from it even if the technology is outdated. But I hear you. You are looking for more relevant information.
Just amazing how the skills and knowledge are passing down to the younger folks, he didn't even break a sweat
😢miss these old timers
❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Nice stuff fellas but im poor
Never heard of guitars made with 1 piece tops.
It’s amazing what’s possible. Violins use one peice tops sometimes. It would work for guitars.
What was the horses fed? Hay treated with grazon will contaminate your compost for up to 5 years. I used 3 yr old horse manure this spring and all my tomatoes, beans, peas are dying from the Graz on still active in the manure.
Just grass, all natural no fertilizer. But that’s an interesting point. I would think if you got the pile hot enough you would cook most of the toxins out of the manure. But maybe not. 🤔
Did the fast cut depend on hp or rpm
Hp was slightly less on the new motor, rpm’s might be higher on the new motor. In either case we are trying to cut as fast as we can without saw dive. That depends on a lot of factors so it’s not a direct speed race between motors, but the Honda is better.
But how long is it?
That beam is 41 feet even.
You Legends!
I'm confused. Sharpen the raker, but then hammer it 🤷♂️
Yep. That’s what he says. It’s not sharp so much as lowered, and then the hammer is for the hook, needs the angle just right. Apparently this is how it’s done.
Beautiful! What an Amazing trade/ thing to know 🎉
Rare, somewhat unusual, but interesting.
Awesome
Thank you, always wondered.
Definitely threw me for a loop when the hammer came out.
It’s a world of difference having a sharp saw!
Thanks for this 👍
You bet!👍
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Any red spruce in your area? I stopped using engleman to make my violins a few years ago.. the grain isn't always so straight in red spruce but the sound difference is astronomically better
You haven’t tried our Engelmann, do you like high density or low density when you build?
Absolutely nailed the soundtrack well done
Thanks for the feedback!
That's impressive work
Thanks.
We making it through 2077 with this one
Good tunes
Agreed!
The difference between men and boys is the size of their toys.
Ya buddy! Gotta love more room for those long log!
Never quite long enough, these mills
Hahaha you guys think your old!
This is so redundant. "Traditional" is redundant when you have the technology to do it better. Wood ovens have very uneven heat, which explains why every pancake looks like the forst pancake. I'll take new age 9 times outta ten
I grew up cooking on a wood fired stove, it’s just interesting because most people wouldn’t know how to cook if the power went out I guess. The flour type also affects the look of the pancake, it’s an enjoyable way to cook if you ask me.
How long did it take to make the sap become syrup? Cause as far I remember it take a long time, like tommorow pancake level of long.
You can get it down quick it it becomes a lot darker almost burned.
Maybe 2 or 3 hours. Or longer if you want. It all depends how sweet you want it and how amber or dark you are going for.
@@MountainVoiceInc Ahhh I see, so you can make it fast, but colour become darker? Or longer but the colour stay golden? I just remember when I was little they would start late into the evenings and it would kinda be ready the next morning.
@@Izzy2u Ya basically, the reduction can go faster on something like a wood stove. Most people go slow because they don’t want to overcook it. If it gets burnt it becomes darker, the last 20 min of the process is quite important. The first hour or 2 not so important.
Actually time of harvest is also a factor for colour. The early sap is often more clear and makes an amber syrup while the late sap is packed with nutrients and makes a darker syrup.
I finally catch a glimpse of one of my favorite people! 💚
Ha mine too
is the stack hot enough that cold water running through taking heat wont slow or stop the whole process?
Not really no. If it’s a continuous stream of cold water it does cool the pile too much. So either slowing the water down probably by increasing pipe size or increasing the size of the pile is the solution to that problem. Cycling the water also works but it cold shocks it every time.
It's all about what you can find around you, and you did pretty well. sticking road kill, some dead fish, as you mentioned manure, urine and my favourite, spent bags of mushroom substrate. Water and mycelium chomp through the mass with moisture management without thinking about temperatures
Ya some sort of starter and then just lots of compostable material sized appropriately and air to keep the process going. I have lots of wood chips.
I love the old saws becsuse they sound like they got a friggin cam in em. By no means is the poulan a good brand or the same tier as an 090 but my 245 and 306 sound badass compared to my 460 rancher
I've changed hundreds of me in my life believe me it sucks
Everytime
Perseverance, brother. Perseverance.
I really like the cooks bandsaw roller guides...
Ya they are good. not exactly light or compact, but they work well for 1.5" blades.
That sure is a clean machine!
Its in good shape. A little dusty but otherwise clean.

We know Sarah, 😁
Mohawk???
It’s looking that way. Not really intentional. Bit of a crazy hair day
Now does the piano wood good to go from there or does it still require a little more drying of the natural kind?
@@timberwolf7350 it’s good to go, but it will probably sit in a shed or outside for another year before it goes through the factory.
@@timberwolf7350 it usually does half a year outside with us and up to a year at the factory before it becomes a soundboard.
You could make some good adulterated bread by mixing in that sawdust.
Hah
Ha ha, that looks like Home Depot lumber right there.
All heart wood
Good tree to leave in the woods!
Agreed
That one would be cool to cut, place in poured resin, and make it into a coffee or sofa table!!❤
Definitely holding together would be the challenge.
It needs cut down because it is dying
Na all the big cedar trees in our area are hollow. It’s just how the grow.
you need to lube those rails . itill make every thing go easier.
There are wheels under there just so you know.
