I’m Rich, aka Boarding All Rows, a San Francisco Bay Area based printmaker and linocut artist. My original linocut prints are designed and hand-pulled on a monotype press in my El Cerrito printmaking studio.
I teach online linoleum block print classes, write block printing tutorials, research the history of linocut on the side, do public linocut demonstrations from time to time, and review linocut supplies like ink and tools.

The Linoleum Block Printing Process
I'm a San Francisco Bay Area artist making linoleum block prints from my printmaking studio. This is my process for making linocut prints including the carving of the linoleum, inking the block with a brayer, and printing the lino on a press.

Excellent! No muss no fuss just clean fun! 👍👍😘
How is the finished texture of the ink on t-shirt. Is it a soft hand feel?
Yes, it's nice.
recommendations on how to wash it to make it last longer? thanks 💌
Hi - I prewash the t-shirt before printing on it, which helps. What you do after printing depends on the ink. You might check out my linocut t-shirt page for some tips: www.boardingallrows.com/block-printing-t-shirts-with-linocuts-on-fabric
What kind of press are you using please
A Blick 999 Model II Etching Press

NOOOO WHY DID YOU MISS THIS ONE LITTLE SPOTT😭😭😭😭
🤣
I was printing on shirts using linocut technique
This print is incredible, all the trees are different. And I like the idea of a lot of nature with only small signs of civilication, a car at the bottom and a plane at the top.
Very thankful to have found you. 🙏

Hi Rich, A wonderful video, thanks. On your advice I just uncrated my Blick 999 Model 2 press…..super excited. A question from this video…what stone are you using for an inking surface ? Is that marble ? I have been using glass, but I am always interested in other ideas. Thanks, Jesse
Thanks and congratulations on your new press, Jesse. In the video, the two inking surfaces are a small repurposed sheet of glass mounted on wood, and a large repurposed mirror.
@@boardingallrows ….got it, thanks for the quick reply….the press gets it’s first use this weekend……another question…….what size sheet of the 1/4 inch MDF did you use with that press. I just trimmed a sheet to 18 x 26…… but I think that might be too long…….my largest paper will be 16x20
@@jessekramer3777 - for that Blick press I was using a 18.25" x 28" sheet of MDF. You will want the board to exceed the the size of the paper on all sides. I might print with your board as is first and then trim later if you still want.
@@boardingallrows Thanks
@@boardingallrows I have another question about my 999. My question is top roller adjustment technique. My practice so far is to leave the top roller elevated with no contact with even the blanket between uses…..this is “roller relaxed mode” I am using linoleum runners when I print. Do I need to adjust incrementally when I lower the top roller into printing position……with maybe one or two full turns of the screws, alternating side by side……. or can I just crank down one side into my predetermined setting then fully move the other side ?
Such a cool mix of patterns and colors, love it :)
That is very kind - thank you!
I love it!!!!
How long does it take for the ink to dry on the shirt? do you wait for it to completely dry before you heat set it ?
It can take up to a week to dry. While the manufacturers of the oil-based textile inks say that heat setting is not necessary, I hang the t-shirt to dry and then heat set in a dryer on hot for 20 minutes.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks!
Thats a nice drawing and print. Love it. Congrats
Do I have to cure it... or dry it in a particular way for the shirt to hold the ink permanently? Thanks a bunch!
It depends on the ink. While the manufacturers of the oil-based fabric inks say that heat setting is not necessary, I hang the t-shirt to dry and then heat set in a dryer on hot for 20 minutes. The water-based fabric inks generally must be heat set prior to washing - usually done by ironing.
@@boardingallrows Thank you!
Is there any other way besides using an etching press to make the impression?
Yes, it's common for people to hand print their blocks, particularly for smaller designs.
Can i use normal fabric paints for fabric printing with lino stamps? The special lino fabric paints arent avalible in my country!
Good question but, unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you. You may have to experiment with what you have in your country and see how it works. Best of luck.
I suppose for this kind of work on fabric it would help to have a mangle?
Yes...it does help to have a press when printing large blocks, but there are a lot of people who block print on fabric by hand.
Thanks for the tips!
Definitely interested in this video but I can't handle the strobing.
This looks great. What kind of ink?
Thanks...it was Drive By Black textile ink.
@@boardingallrows is it able to wash
@@havvagulsan Yes.
@@boardingallrows thanks a lot
Love the print!
beauuuuutiful
DONDE CONSEGUISTE TU GUBIAS? SALUDOS
Wonderful! I just started out with Lino prints, I have no etching press and it's hard to get a smooth layer of ink... I am using a water based ink with good qualities brayer ... Not sure if it's the ink or the lack of a press... Do u use an oil based ink?
Hey, thanks. Yes, I prefer oil-based ink for printing on fabric. Gamblin and Speedball both make good textile inks. When using water-based ink I find that a foam brayer is helpful.
how well does printing/speedball ink hold up over time on fabric?
The Speedball Fabric Block Printing Ink holds up well to repeated washing, though there will be a little fading over time.
nice print - lovely balanced design
This was beautiful!
The details is so pretty! love this work!!
