Had the pleasure of training at the london bridge Temple school for a year. Was a great place and a magic year!
Love that footwork at the end!
I saw the Mind Body and Kickass Move episode where they had visited the masters of Chow Gar Tong Long. The little bit they did there pales in comparison to what was shown here. Those older men are actually cat quick with those moves. It was also nice to see Grand Master Yip Shui, who was 92 in that Kickass Moves episode, leading a class in his day. He died a year after that Kickass moves episode was filmed.
Excellent.I am a Chow Gar Kung Fu practitioner. It is an excellent Kung Fu.
Why are they all speaking in Cantonese??? HK government doesn't allow Hakkanese in HK schools???

Really think this stuff is over rated as no one in MMA uses this. I believe this stuff will get your ass kicked promptly in a street fight. Best to use these techniques for folding laundry or stirring noodle's in a wok!
Have you considered that nobody knows these styles, that they are rare and take more to train. Even more than that why can’t we just respect it for cultural preservation and general health and wellness. Especially Chow Gar Mantis, the training is very hard but if you train it for your whole life your health will be benefited greatly when you are old.
(How could it be overrated when no one knows about it in general)

Not strikes. Only levers. Like prying the guard and then striking down the center. Heavy conditioning and heavy root is emphasized, only one or two strikes are trained because that's all they're expected to use. A lot of the hakanese martial arts walk in expecting to get blindsided and be ambushed in close quarters, hence the reliance on very small motion.

@@Amalvipls kinda. It's in a way both. The high conditioning on the iron dummy means hitting them hurts and makes sure they can survive a cane to the arm. The finger conditioning makes sure they can attack to hurt from close range, Phoenix eye. The heavy root means they don't get dragged down, dragged down means many boot stomping your head in. Hakanese people were nomads of China, hated by most locals and attacking them was par the course. Hence, their martial arts walk in expecting to get hit with a bat(notice the dummy is hard iron not wood) before they can see and bum rushed. Thus, usually use only extremely painful, high conditioned moves. Like Phoenix eye, anyone without conditioning will break their finger, but it's needed because it concentrates all the force into one painful spike. Unfortunately these arts are dying because the dedication needed is too high and the reward isn't immediate. Can't really blame the youth though.

Tony Leung Sifu created Steel Wire Mantis in London in the late 1980's after learning some Chow Gar Tong Long and added Tiet Sien Kuen (Iron Wire Fist) from Hung Kuen. He then made all his students wear cute off the shoulder monk style robes. The style died it's death about 10 years later when Mr Leung popped off to HK to become a monk and reinvent himself as a self help Guru.
What a great video compilation! Thanks for the upload. Kung-fu is generally such a mixed bag, but chow gar is one of those trad tough styles that provides a specific set of tools and abilities, no-nonsense and hard to train in. Probably maximise it if you come to it as a black belt in some other style.
