How to Eat Enough Food While Bike Touring
Eating well is so important while bike touring. To borrow an analogy from the motor vehicle world, our stomachs are our gas tanks, and just like with motor vehicles, we can run into all kinds of problems if we let our stomachs run empty.
In this video, I share a little bit about how I think about food and eating well on an bike tour overnight to the Anza-Borrego Desert in Southern California. And even still, I managed to make at least a couple of mistakes.
There are plenty of options when it comes to cooking gear, and I'm not necessarily recommending what I use, but here are links in case you were curious:

How to Stay Warm Bike Touring in Cool Weather

One of my favorite parts of bike touring is getting to truly experience the natural world, including all of its moods and weather. How to Plan for Water Bike Touring in Dry Climates

Staying hydrated is among the most important aspects of bike touring, and here in the arid southwest, it can be challenging. Do your self a favour, get some fresh pasta or even better get some couscous. With couscous you pour the boiling water onto the grains and allow them to cook for 2 min. No need to waste fuel boiling pasta for 20 min and you don't have pasta water to drink.

    Canister stoves, If anyone is stove shopping, the JetBoil MicroMo boils water in 1.3 mins. It has a heat exchanger, and regulator so it boils and simmers, a 4oz canister will last almost a week in the backcountry. Open stoves like the MSR Pocket Rocket are light, but inefficient. Multi fuel gas stoves are good above 10,000 feet and for snow camping. That 55 year old brass Svea, yep, I owned one in 1972, there is a reason they disappeared. Looks like you rode Old Hwy 80 to Alpine, then north on 79 or Sunrise Hwy to Julian, down Banner Grade into Anza Borrego. There is a neat way to make a loop of that trip with a lot of off-road away from traffic. Happy trails!☮

      The Stagecoach 400 route helps a lot for off road in SD county. Also road and dirt, from OB, old Hwy 80 to Inkopah, down I-8 is bike legal to Ocotillo, S-2 north to 78 west into Julian up Banner Grade, Farmers Rd in Julian to Wynola, 78 to Santa Ysabel, go north to Black Canyon Rd, turns to dirt, descend into Ramona, from there back roads to Lake Hodges and dirt trails around the lake, or go south to RB and Camino Del Sur to 56 bike path to coast. Complete loop from coast, mtns, desert, and return to coast. Leave OB early am Sat or Sun for low traffic out of SD. Happy trails!

    The whisper lite series is a good stove. Its roots go back to 1898. For some reason the makers have abandoned the simpler original pressurized design made of brass tank and removable tower. The only moving part is the pressurizing pump, which needs a new gasket about every 50 years. No replaceable fuel line that goes from the fuel bottle to the burner tower folding stabilizer legs. My go two for a kick ass power house is the Optimus 00 still available on the secondary market. Fits comfortably in a two liter pot, with room left over for kitchen tools and nests inside a three liter pot and easily feeds four. When put together they look like a canister stove, but Kerosine burns almost twice as hot as a canister stove. For one or two traveling together I use the Seva 123 which is simple perfection and fits in a one liter pot. It has a built in wind screen heat key to adjust flame, cooks using one or two liter pot and runs on white gas. I have used it on week cross country ski trips. How did the hold up? Mine in use after 55 years and still going strong. The secret to getting enough calories in a day is to eat three meals and nosh all day long with finger food in your grub bag.

    Just a few comments from a guy who has lived south of Helena for 30 years. First, the goal of most bears is to avoid humans. The major rule when camping is to not have bear attractants in the tent, and when riding is to not surprise a bear, especially one with cubs, where you might be perceived as a threat. Montana FWP has “bear awareness” resources and classes, as does the Yellowstone NP site. Second, western Montana is home to the Adventure Cycling Assn which has numerous resources for bikepackers - maps, guides etc. There are some large (like, owning the landmass of some eastern states) landowners, mostly corporate magnates, who are notoriously (one might say infamously) touchy about trespassers ( I won’t mention names) but my experience is that most locals are friendly - but stay on public land. Finally, Komoot , gravelmap and trailforks are good online resources to check out potential backcountry routes. Sorry for the bad parts of your trip.

    I am just starting out dirt road touring, in eastern Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota. There is antipathy towards cycle tourists and hikers from some. I catch it on long day rides in my area occasionally. And I am a three decade oil field hand. It is culture war thing. I use Ride With GPS (RWGPS) for route planning and GAIA Premium for public lands for camping safety. Public roads and easements are a problem. Being here in Wyoming, I have the luxury of having time to consult county road maps. Tim Fitzwater fan here too. For Western Montana, or anywhere in the Western UStrip planning, I would consult Adventure Cycling in Missoula MT.

    • @johnsaunders1435
      @johnsaunders1435 Год назад

      @@kyleonwheels I drink lots of water daily. I hardly ever drink carbonated beverages with the exception of a sugar free monster or rock star (I know "very bad") to get me going at my job. I believe in electrolyte tabs and powders. I try to eat mostly good foods. Acclimate to the temps, winters and cold are difficult for me more than heat. I ride with a local kids mtb team and there is a mostly grown group related to that group that ride streets. So I think I'm getting the best of both worlds. I live in a beautiful land locked city that is on a slope so lots of long uphill climbs that arent foreign to me. The big challenge here is longer distance cycling that gets redundant. So drink as often as you can, eat as well as you can and cycle as much as you can. Commuting to/from work if possible is a huge plus.

BTW, I carry the Katadyn BE FREE water filtration system with me, and when I plan to do a tour I'll also bring along my Grayl Geopress water purification system just to be extra safe about not consuming any contaminants from some water sources that may have negative intestinal effects on me during the ride. Thank you for the comment! I didn't know all that, and I'll definitely be keeping the Grayl Geopress in mind as a possible filtration system. Happy new year, and I hope the same for you as well!
