80s Synth Wave Prime Brothers v. Zerg (Alien Hives)
I finally got enough of my Zerg army finished to play a full game with them. This isn't the narrative game I have planned, just a test run. Can the Prime Brothers cleanse the city, or will the Zerg overrun them? For the Swarm!

I've never backed a kickstarter game as they are all to expensive for something i doesn't know in advance will play well and to my tastes. I think whete possible they need to offer "demo" versions like computer games do - cheep or free-to-print versions with the core game. Then if i love that i may shell out for the full version with dozens of fancy parts.

Great battle rep and OPR with zerg models, even more awesome! FYI, melee morale test ignores the wounds at end of activation clause: "Units that were in melee don’t take morale tests from wounds at the end of an activation, but must compare the number of wounds each unit caused instead. The unit with the lowest total loses, and must take a morale test."

GW is Cult Tactics Marketing ( a term I just made up ). People get in because they need a community. They stay in and take the abuse of the Cult Leader ( GW ) because they don't want to leave that community. The social instinct is a type of survival instinct and for many that is stronger than the need for self respect.

Subscription models won't work with a CMON, the "culture" of that industry relies heavily on being sold for that specific game and offering. You wouldn't sign up to buy something sight unseen. What you're describing sounds more like their stretch pay model, where you break your pledge into several payments in case you don't have the cash right then. Long term sign-ups, people buying a year in advance, are all based on an established product, you may not know what new shows Netflix will make, but you know what it is and 99% of its shows and movies over the next year are already available. STL makers all go monthly, a discrete offering that you either accept or don't accept.

So from the miniatures stand point at least, I have a friend who used to be model designer for a US based miniatures company. There was a significant shift in the company after their first successful Kickstarter. Suddenly their entire business strategy shifted to churning out 1-2 Kickstarters every year. It killed the freedom that the artists originally had, and started to mirror the crunch that a lot of game development world has. They're literally spending their days designing the stretch goal minis with their early sketches getting published and the dragged online. I think crowd funding has shifted from a "I have a cool idea, lets see if other people like it" to a "this is our entire business model" and its why crowd funding games has shifted in how its perceived. I mean, do companies like CMON really NEED to crowdfund? And Kickstarter depends on these successful repeat campaigns to make their money too, so they encourage it.

    • @Good.Nuff.Gaming

Really? I suppose it's how much it costs. I spend $120 a year for my subscription to OPR. That would be two boxes from GW. Now, I can definitely see the devil in the whole "5 bucks to this place and 5 to that" eventually adding up to way more than the person intended.

Patreon, in particular OPR patreon, exists as sort of a magazine subscription. I'm totes cool with paying for a magazine subscription to a thing I like. Also, linking the article in the description would be welcome. CMON is big enough that they don't need kickstarter, as are many of the other players in the games space. Their products are regularly available and released through online stores and LGS. They use it as a pre-order system and to push the side trinkets that don't sell well as individual buys at an LGS. No store wants to stock a single-game playmat that's going to rot on a shelf, so make them available with the game itself and make them to order at the number you need for people that actually want it at time of release. A poorly designed kickstarter that makes it basically impossible to figure out what you're actually getting (looking at you, Dakka Dakka Store) is infinitely more frustrating to use than a normal storefront. FOMO crap that adds little to no value to the game only fuels scalpers. There are genuine ongoing supply chain issues due to political and weather events that trigger delays, practically nobody keeps decoupled stock, and just-in-time practices remain extremely vulnerable to disruption that can ramifications for years on a given market. I also think there's a general fatigue on this sort of thing. Getting a new game with 300 miniatures and a thousand cards is cool... once or twice. Most everyone I know has been burned by an abandoned or underwhelming crowdfunding project by now.

I don't like subscriptions, and given the collapse of companies like Netflix and Disney, I don't think that particular business model will work long term. That said, if you want subscription based wargaming, GW has a 40k magazine that comes with minis and paints that is more or less what you describe. So many game Kickstarter feel unnecessary. I'm not a mini expert, but a DC licensed game from a company that has been operating for a decade. Don't they have enough capital to start production? Kickstarter used to be for upstarts and more out there ideas that might not be viable.

@@Good.Nuff.Gaming I was talking about their recent Combat Patrol magazine. I don't know if it's available in the US. I guess not. In short, it's about £10 per magazine, and each one you get something. A mini. Some paint. That kind of thing. I got the first one (£3 for a Space Marine Terminator Captain and a Tyranid Prime leader) because it seemed like a good deal, but some of the stuff you get in future issues is questionable to me. £10 for a singe sergeant. That kind of thing. Also, 9 combat patrols plus paints plus rules for £890 total is a bit steep for me. Especially since only about half the armies seem to be interesting. I'm sure it'll be less than RRP/MSRP if it was all totaled up, but unless you're a super fan I can see it costing more money in the long run. Related to that. One thing I found interesting is the magazine had a d3 table to name and give a backstory to your leader. I don't know if that's a thing in modern 40k.

RUclips seems to have ate my reply (but says there's 2 replies but only shows 1, so sorry if this is a double post) but I was talking about the recent Combat Patrol magazine, which I guess isn't available in the US. £10 for a magazine and something. A mini, some paint, whatever. I guess it would work out cheaper if you totaled it all up, but unless you want 9 different combat patrols, it might still be better to just get them individually.

In my opinion I think after so much perceived sucess previously + over the pandemic period, more companies & individuals saw kickstarter as an easy way to get funding & make money; causing an explosion of offerings at very different quality's and value, in adition to encouraging companies to offer less & less for same price. I feel the sheer number of offerings now has people being more hesitant as well, with too much choice to consider & regular new offerings. Fomo and limited options (smaller no. of wargames kickstarters) created, along with popularity of kickstarter in general historically lead to this over saturation, now encouraging people to better consider their choices along with having less disposable income & time. With the right marketing there are still huge wins but many creators are just still assuming they don't need the marketing or offering very little in real terms, with the more cynical companies using kickstarters as little more than an advert for something they were capable of funding themselves & as a way of taking pre-orders. All this puts me off even considering them now.

I would not subscribe to a company that does not deliver a product every time they get my money. It doesn't need to be a complete product at once, but I want to see some part of what I'm paying for every time I pay. Take OPR - I have a monthly subscription and every month I get some models. I don't get the entire range every month, but I get a part of it, and that makes me feel I'm getting my moneys worth without much risk - if Gaetano suddenly decides to run away with the money I will only have lost one month of subscription, instead of six or potentially even a whole year. TL;DR: I like to get stuff every time I pay for it. On the other hand I love if board games sold components as STLs. and printable PDFs, with the option to buy it in pieces, ie. I'll print my own minis, but will buy the game board professionally printed on a nice, hard cardboard.

Oh I agree with that. I would say if board game companies go subscription they send the items in a stream so that you have something to look forward to every month. Plus it will make people less likely to cancel because maybe next month's item will be awesome

The same thing happened with TSR back in the 80s. Part of why they wound up in so much debt was because the business side of TSR made a bunch of business ventures that sounded reasonable but weren't. They invested into the hobby community hoping for overlap with the gaming community and while that certainly exist now that overlap wasn't quite there at the time. You also had the problem of executives not focusing on making sure the game itself was high quality. Dice Wizards and Killing the Dragon go into this in far more detail.

So how much consultation do you do with the people who commission work? I can see here what you are doing but I was wondering how much input came from the owner?

Most of them say "paint it like the box" as far as color scheme, and want a slight higher than tabletop standard. If they are new I paint one model fully and then see what they think before doing the rest.

I disagree about finding a game. Where I live at least, GW is the only game in town. There are no other local places to play anything. I'm not exactly rural either. The next town over has some FLGS and clubs, but last time I was there they were limited in what they played. The question about tables. The local GW has about 3-6 (the place has closed down and re-opened a bunch). But they're basically half-sized tables. 2x2, maybe 3x3 I've not measured, and due to the layout of the building, playing a full board would be wider than it is long. Why clubs work in the UK. I think it's a matter of space. I'm kinda jealous when US RUclipsrs go to their "basement" or "garage" or "man cave" and they have a huge 10x10 space (or more) to do whatever they want with. This combines with the previous point, where a kitchen table or a even a coffee table is the only gaming space available. This is why I was interested in those "tiny 40k" videos that shrink heroic scale to 10-15mm scale. On not using d6s. I had a similar idea of just using d8s with no modifications and see how that goes. I've never got to play vanilla OPR, so it would have to be someone else. But I wondered if the higher hit rate on attacks would be countered by higher saves. I like your d12 idea though. Maybe that could be a future battle report?

Valid points. I remember from the time I spent in different countries in Europe, that houses just weren't as big and so you're right - it's not a common to have a room to fully dedicate to gaming.
