It's not about him, I think their point was that this performance took place quite soon after his passing and the parallels to the lyrics are a little chilling, considering.

Thisi is one of my favorite songs. Regina Spektor not only writes thoughtful, quirky songs, but she's a truly talented performer. To me this is the power of a great live performance. She doesn't need elaborate choreography, or a glitzy costume, or high-tech lighting. She conveys more emotion with the sound of her voice, the piano, and the beauty of her songs, than all the Beyonces and Lady Gagas and all the other over-produced studio products pawned off as music.
