Minimoog Model D Complete Keybed Restoration of Vintage Moog Synthesizer
This 1974 Minimoog Model D had a broken key along with a completely unusable keybed when it came by the shop. I filmed the entirety of this tedious process for the benefit of anyone looking to rebuild a keybed on a vintage synth. Hopefully it will give you an idea of an organized workflow that will help you get the project done so you can get back to playing!
There are a number of sites still providing parts to service your keybed. I used Syntar and Rosin Sound for the various supplies needed.
At a minimum you'll need bushings and lubricant. I also had a broken key to replace.
Be aware that there are different keysprings for black and white keys. I had a box for each so they didn't get mixed...

Restored Minimoog Model D - the Original Analog Synthesizer Back from the Dead!

Thanks for watching! I am NOT a keyboard player so be forewarned! It's not often that you'll find a Minimoog in the wild so I thought I'd share what one looks and sounds like. I’ve had this vintage '74 Model D Minimoog on the bench all week and in addition to rebuilding the keybed and bushings I replaced all the electrolytic caps, and performed the Moog factory pitchweel update. That redesign b...

The Terrible Truth About Shipping Tube Amps

    I built one of these also, relatively quick and easy build; it sounds similar to yours. It's not the most versatile tremolo in the world but has a nice old school sound and it's pretty cool to build a guitar effect designed in the 1950's!

    I made one back in 1976 when there weren’t as many electronics options. I want to make another one where the input to the TB comes from the amp and the switch changes the output from the amp to the TB or goes out the amp speakers. I’m not sure how to do that. Any ideas? If I use a lighted switch doesn’t it need to draw power from the power supply? Will that draw too much power away from the amp in the box? Does the switch need to be DPDT or TPDT? I enjoyed your video.

    Anyone have any PDF plans? Not sure why there is not a source of the loose wood component out of China and just finish assembly yourself. The price of these built from Mojo or TAD or Weber or Stew Mac at $150-200 is just WAY too much for what your getting. Good God, you can get a complete guitar with all of the work and paint that goes into them, VOS reliced, electronics, pickups, control, know, and tuners and yes, it's shit, but the whole thing and landed from China for $200 and what these companies are charging for these cradles!!

    My mother says that great grandfather repaired irons and toasters in the 1940s and 1950s. Cleaning out my father's things, I found a box of the cords he used in this in what appears to be like new condition. I found your video as a result (my mom says what a hoot!) of trying to Google them. I don't believe the cords are worth anything, but would love to get them into hands that would appreciate them vs. dropping them at my local thrift store. Can you point me in the right direction?

    So, let me ask this question. When I press most notes on my keyboard, it's like the glide is on., and that just pressing one note or any note. Not 2 at the same time. Is this due to dirty contacts on the keyboard keys. And, it's not on all keys but a majority. Some keys play normally. Thanks!

    Have you ever covered an amp with canvas? Would you recomend it? I am building myself a combo organ and am considering using canvas instead of tolex as a budget friendly option.

    • @FreshOldSchool
      @FreshOldSchool 5 месяцев назад

      Yes! I used heavy waxed army surplus green on a few amps. Look up “The Anvil” or the “Marshal Law” at the Deluxe Amplification website. You’ll see them. Canvas has threads that can pull out and run if you aren’t careful with orientation. So use a really sharp blade and change it often. You can also shellac canvas afterward.

      Hmmm. Maybe. Couldn’t hurt to try! The nice thing about tolex glue is that it can be reworked with a heat gun. Headliner adhesive might not. Been a while since I’ve used it. Back in the day tho… seems like I had a stable of cars that had sagging headliners that I repaired. The downside of that adhesive is that when you use it you’ll never remember the process down the road. Haha.

    • @FreshOldSchool
      @FreshOldSchool 5 месяцев назад

      Yikes. I’d try and save them if you can. If they are shellacked they probably didn’t dissolve real flakes but used something with waxiness in it. The real stuff isn’t tacky. You might get away with just a sealer coat.

      Different models are worth different amounts. Condition is a factor. Without an organ to connect and test it you wont be able to get as much as you could. There’s a tag on the bag that says the model # if you decide to list it on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace.
