Pika Compilation - Pika Calls, Pikas Harvesting and Grazing
See the American Pika harvesting flowers, Pikas calling out and eating greens. I spent 3 months filming pikas at Mount Rainier National Park, Washington in 2023 and made a compilation of my favorite clips. In this video you can watch the American Pika grazing on grass on forbs, harvesting false hellebore and making its alarm calls. You can hear background pikas calling out and other birds singing such as the Fox Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco and Red-breasted Nuthatch. American Pikas are lagomorphs, meaning they are related to rabbits despite looking like hamsters or guinea pigs. Filmed on my old camera setup, a Canon R7 + RF 600mm F11 lens. Saw one this morning at a park in North Houston. ❤
I just had the pleasure of hearing one of these beautiful birds call out somewhere in the woods of my back yard. Some get to hear it all of the time. But after living here for 20 years this has been the first one I've heard in person. They are supposed to be common around here and yet it took me 20 years to finally hear one calling out before their hunt begins. It was an exciting privilege. So cool! I tried to use this sound clip to try and draw it near. It didn't work. It must have went radio silent to stalk its prey. 😅
