Understanding the mathematics of modular group, fundamental domain and modular symmetry
Просмотров 15014 дней назад
In this video, I explain modular groups, modular symmetry and how the fundamental domain for the modular group is defined, in a mathematically rigorous manner. However, since these are pretty advanced topics in mathematics, I have discussed everything relevant so that even a layperson or a beginner can make some sense of the video. That's the reason behind this video being so long, but if you a...

ADvercity: How Physics Saved My Life (See description)

You must have heard the famous saying: "Adversity causes some men to break, others to break records." In this video, I discuss how some people around me, posing as "friends", tried to break me, and how I won yet another difficult mental battle. I have been mentally residing in a city called ADvercity during this time, hence the title of the video. ADvercity is the only city in ADverse, or AD's ...

    Some topics or thoughts I came across the video while seeing it. (Probably would be updating it as i watch it) 6:19 I am presuming H here extends to infinities as the Complex plane is unbounded above 15:26 Ohh this is n-fold symmetry. 120° results in 2pi/3 fold symmetry and reflection is basically 180° rotation and hence 2 fold symmetry 18:16 Can this be checked through Hamiltonian canonical equations? As in, through the conservation of the conjugate momentum through the generalised coordinate being cyclic ( in case of time, it is trivial but does it hold for position or momenta?) 30:49 So does the general Linear group also needs to satisfy this condition or is it an additional condition? Aside from being a matrix multiplication group, does it need the elements to be satisfying the condition that they musn't lie in a hyperplane or does the property automatically come from the idea that the vectors are linearly independent ( Taking the case of 2d:- if the vectors lie in hyperplane - in this case line, they are linearly independent as one vector is basically a scalar multiple of another) 31:31 I am guessing the Field that is associated with the vector in this case is R (taken arbitrarily) as in the previous case it was defined over R 36:49 Yes, there can be some x,y € G and x,y is not in N , then there is no guarantee that these two will satisfy the condition. However does this mean N is abelian? since for x € N and y € N, but x,y also € G as N is a subgroup of G implying that xy = yx making N an abelian. 37:49 the assumption is because in GLN , the operation is multiplication or is it a specific case? 40:28 This also includes xN or is there any restriction that it must be right coset? 43:53 We can also define the lines as vector segments a,b such that if a,b is parallel then the dot product of them is maximum provided a is translated on top of b 45:32 So for positive infinity and negative infinity, the corresponding point will be the point at the top of the circle right? Isn't this also how we define a riemann sphere which we use to define complex numbers in Complex plane 56:37 So only in case of g = e , is it true... in case of other values of g, if it is true, then it is not faithful

      @ArpanD 13 дней назад

      You are right about the first two points. Coming to the third point, yes of course. If the Hamiltonian is not a function of the generalized coordinate (cyclic coordinate), then the time derivative of the conjugate momentum corresponding to that coordinate is zero, meaning the corresponding momentum is a conserved quantity. In fact, you can intuitively understand that conservation of linear momentum is a consequence of translational symmetry just from Newton's second and third laws. Consider the collision of two bodies, initially separated in space. Applying Newton's laws on both the bodies, we can show that the total momentum of the entire system remains unchanged before and after the collision. Now since you applied the same laws on both the bodies, and one of the bodies was shifted from the other, you assume that the laws of physics don't change if we shift (translate) from one position in space to another. That's translational symmetry. Of course, using Hamilton's canonical equations is the more mathematically rigorous way to show this, but for high school students and laypeople, the above explanation might help. Now the fourth point. The condition that the points must be in general linear position is not an additional condition, it automatically follows from the linear independence of the vectors defined by the columns (or equivalently, rows) of the matrices that belong to the group, as you rightly said. Both the conditions (the invertibility of the matrices and the general linear position condition) are just different ways of saying the same thing. One is more mathematical while the other is more geometric (kind of). You are right about the fifth point too. Although of course, you can define the general or special linear group over the field of complex numbers too. Coming to your sixth point, N would be Abelian iff, as you said, x ∈ N plus y ∈ N (and of course x, y ∈ G), but x ∈ N is not necessarily true in general. We have defined x to be the elements of the parent group G, so if any arbitrary x ∈ N, essentially, we are talking about the parent group itself. In other words, N and G are the same group, and thus y ∈ N implies y ∈ G as well. So, both x and y represent any arbitrary element of the group G (or N), and now if xy = yx for all x, y, then of course G (or equivalently N) is an Abelian group. As for the seventh point, it is a specific case, just an example. Coming to point number eight, yes you are right, we could also have written xN instead of Nx. Since we have already defined N to be a normal subgroup of G (and not just any arbitrary subgroup), it automatically implies that xN = Nx. Point nine, yes true we can do that too. For point number ten, you are absolutely right. Riemann sphere is actually the projective space for complex numbers. It is kind of an extension of what I discussed, for complex numbers. For the last point, yes you are again right. This is very important to understand, we will use this later in the video when studying the fundamental domain of the modular group. Thanks for your questions and for watching the video!!

    Phenomenal video, I think one of your best yet. A very beautiful way to explain such dense material. Even forgetting almost all of my linear algebra from college, a layperson like me is able to follow the concepts to a manageable (though very slow) degree. I originally thought that the essay-format you used might be a bit confusing, but as I progressed I realized how valuable it was to be able to pause on an entire chunk of text to understand the content a bit deeper. Only an hour in so far but hope you keeping making videos like this, this will definitely be one that I return to repeatedly to continue digesting!

    would you please quantify the reasons society pushed you towards being not human? you can give vague hideous answers, i'd like to reflect on them(you can ignore if you dont want to answer)

    • @ArpanD
      @ArpanD Месяц назад

      Thanks for the question! Well, first of all, of course I am still a human. Let me clarify this. Society is not the only one to blame here, but it played its part real good! It's not that there are no good, genuine and trustworthy people in my life. There are many: my parents, some of my relatives and a few others. But initially I did the mistake of putting my faith in the wrong kind of people. I mean I gave them more importance and time than I should have done so. The significant change that has come in me is that I stopped caring about the wrong kind of people, that's all. Of course, it is not as easy as it sounds, but I managed to change myself in the end. Plus there's always that feeling of not fitting in the crowd. That was difficult initially, although I'm used to it by now. Another last thing is that I've always been dissatisfied with the system. But I've realized nobody will listen to your rants against the system if you are just average (average as measured by the standards set by the system, I mean), and after this realization, I shut myself out for a while from some of the toxic people around me and focused on getting good grades (even though I myself don't judge people, especially not their potential for doing research in the fundamental sciences, by their grades). In conclusion, I have formed a negative perception of humanity in general, although the percentage of humans I've interacted with (in-person or virtually) is an extremely small portion of the world's population, so I shouldn't make a general claim on humanity. Anyway, I hope this somewhat answers your question and thanks for watching this video! Cheers and all the best for your studies and future!

    The greatest fear I have about artificial intelligence and consciousness research is if it someday makes immortality possible in practice. I know that is scientifically a very far-fetched idea and will only be realizable if the computataional hypothesis of the brain is true AND we are able to not only build an artificial brain with billions of connections arranged in the precise right way, but also simulate it in the perfect manner (say, using electrical impulses). But if one day it becomes possible to achieve digital immortality, then the rich people will have access to this technology and the poor people will not. That is the worst that can happen to humankind, from an unbiased perspective. Even today, money can buy almost everything except death. All of us are subject to death, rich or poor. But it would be extremely, extremely unfair if one day money can even evade death, I'd personally prefer complete destruction of humankind to such a future. And of course, AI has the potential to make this job of building a digital consciousness much easier, assuming it is possible.

    You can find the video I mentioned in "Related Videos" on this Short. Or directly look it up on my channel! Also, if you're hated, remember people only hate you if you're perfect and doing great, since that makes them feel insecure. People love you only when they don’t see you as a threat to them. In my view, it's more pity disguised as love. Also, just wanted to let you know I've recently released another original song "Goodbye World" inspired by all these realizations, please check it out on the Arpan Amplified RUclips channel if you haven’t already (you can find it featured on the homepage of this channel or just search for "Arpan Amplified" on RUclips). Hello Arpan. You might not recognize me but I've seen you in your growth years since when we around 4th or 5th standard. Yes we were in same school, DPS. You were one among the masses I always thought was brave and smart. I've noticed you were invested in science and factual stuff since forever. I remember you used to collect facts from everyone's last pages of notebooks, Infact were very dedicated to it, seen you make fun of your friends so much especially SD(cant take his name), make the whole class laugh from it (atleast me always), smart minds do have a very humorous personality, make a fun sound and beats out of random words like "disturbing" (I remember your DIstA-DiSTa-Dista beat), even though it was a little annoying.😭😭 And many more little stuff, but my point is I've seen a very lively side of you. And looking back now, I must admit I've always admired you since then. You might not think so but you've made a lot of positive impact on other people around you. In recent years, with your achievements growing, writing a book, pursuing your intrests, making music, starting a youtube channel, I've only admired you more and I'm sure there are much more which I'm not aware of. Hearing about your journey made me really disappointed in the world around you to make you this way and suffer. I can see it made you stronger, but I also cherish the lively phase of yours, which seems to be supressed in the deepest of depths right now. I genuinely wish things get better and better and you get what you deserve. I hate the way your mental health has deteriorated so much and again, I'm glad you were able to cope and come out of it. I want you to know that nomatter what path u choose consciously or the system makes u choose it, YOU'LL ALWAYS BE DIFFERENT FROM EVERYONE. You'll always fit in that one principal of yours of being different. You'll always be much more than the generalized idea of going thought the path. You have grown, become wiser, lost contacts, but have continued to inspire people (Not meaning the general idea of inspire as in motivation or anything but more like giving a reality check and making people realize its fine to be conventional). Some things which you spoke about indeed were eye opening. And I'm utterly grateful to you for making this video.

      Thanks, I have no idea who exactly you are, but your comment reminded me of those old school days (I won't say "good old days", but those days were probably better because, well, ignorance is bliss, although I would choose truth over bliss anyday!) Anyway, all I can say is thanks for following my works and for your kind words, I don't deserve all those compliments (I'm not being humble, I really don't), but I'm still glad if I had a positive impact - no matter how little - on you and on anyone else. Thanks for the time you took to write this comment, it makes me feel slightly better and restores my faith in humanity. Although I said a lot of negative stuff in the video (most of which are true, nevertheless), I feel like there still are a few good things left in this dark world, and precisely because the world is dark, these good things shine brighter. For instance even in college (and in general), as I've mentioned somewhere in the video, most people are negative, marks-oriented and - to use a slightly strong word - nasty (if anyone from my college is reading this, I don't care, I further emphasize what I said). But there are a few (one or two) genuinely good people in my college as well (not naming them here). Anyway, all the best to you, although I don't know your exact identity, my very best wishes to you, you'll do great in your life too. Cheers - Arpan

    Hello Arpan! I'm Bipasha from you class 🙃 I'm here for a really long comment. I haven't watched the video completely yet, reached 12:39. But I think it's really really true whatever you are saying. Many people end up hating a subject because the way they were taught the subject was not interesting enough, or in some cases, the teacher who taught them didn't do it interestingly enough. Though this was not the case with me in the case of Physics and Maths (they were always my favourite subjects as a child), it was the case with Statistics for me. In all classes, the "Statistics" chapter of Maths was SO boring to me - just bar graphs, histograms, mean-median-mode formulas, and later on standard deviation formula - I found them extremely boring. Now I have Statistics as an elective subject and it's my favourite subject after Physics and Maths because I see it is actually so different than the way we were taught. So for me the video is like: How NOT to hate Statistics 😂 But also with Physics, although I liked it in school, I do remember my interest increasing by a lot on reading "A Brief History of Time" and a Michio Kaku book (and also my father kept on advertising Physics, but let's leave that 😂). So for someone new to Physics, I think what you suggest is absolutely great! Read some of these books which are not study-study but still give you an idea of certain fields in Physics and then decide whethe you like it or not. Same should, I think, go for all subjects. Very good video ❤️ Keep creating more (ofc you'll do that even if someone says otherwise). Also found it really interesting to know the story of how you got interested in Physics and Consciousness and have so much knowledge! (Lend me some🙋🏻‍♀️) Yours Bipasha 🤗

    Here is a bit of criticism: Nobody is going to watch a video that long unless they are heavily interested in it and you are able to provide content worth listening to. People dont have much patience these days. And the fact that it is 50 mins long goes to show that you had to include various details that were digressing from the topic or were not really important. Next the video, There are loads of things to do to make the video interesting. Just having a nice background doesnt do all the work. The presentation skills are another matter. You sound as if you just woke up from sleep. You have to radiate energy. I found nothing. I dont know why this just popped up in my recommendations but I would never watch it. I just thought perhaps these advices can help. Anyway Not telling u to give up. Learn to change and be a better youtuber in the future. Peace out

      Hey, thanks so much for the constructive criticism. You're right of course. I understand people don't have the patience to watch a 50 minutes long video, but I willingly didn't put my best efforts to this video, to all of my RUclips videos for that matter. I just kinda speak what I want to say in front of the camera, and since I don't have a well-written script, it's only natural that I end up including irrelevant stuff in my videos and making them longer than necessary. But why should I put all my efforts into making professional RUclips videos, if I'm not getting a good response from my audience? There are loads of channels uploading even more nonsense stuff (maybe "well-presented" stuff, but hollow stuff nevertheless) and garnering thousands of likes and subscribers. I know I might sound a bit resentful but I'm only replying to your comment. RUclips is not my profession, and of course I can't and don't force anyone to watch my videos. However, all that said, I really appreciate the fact that you took some time out of your life to write this comment and share your valuable suggestions. Especially I completely agree on this part that I seriously need to improve my presentation skills, not for my RUclips videos but in general. And as a fun fact, I recorded this video at around 3 AM in the night cause that's the only free time I could find, I was too swamped up with other tasks during the day. So you say I sound like I woke up from sleep, although actually I was yearning to go to sleep while recording this video! Finally, I don't want to sound rude or anything, but you say "not telling you to give up", well I just want to assure you that I'm not gonna give up. Many people in my life have oppressed me and told me to give up in a much, much harsher manner, but I still haven't, and I never will as long as I'm myself. Thanks!

    It may well be that current assumptions in physics will prove to be "just a phase" in our scientific understanding of Reality, as scientific insights, understanding and our consiousness expand again from the contraction it has experienced since metaphysics was separated from physics. As a wise man once said, "Without full vision, man has divided the indivisible." The mounting crises we are experiencing in our volatile world are a mere reflection of the truth of that statement.

    As you are now reflecting on your interest in metaphysics as "a phase", it will be interesting to see how you will look back on your comments in this video in 20-30 years time! 😀

    Neither do physics nor meta physics tells you the truth. Let me ask you a simple question. According to physics, matter is colorless and what we call color is just reflected light of different wavelengths. So how do your brain interprets those wavelengths as color if color isn't a fundamental property of the matter your brain is made out off? And this question applies to sound, taste, smell as well. You can watch mary red room video for a better explanation.
