Geode made into a pendant by cutting a groove into the edge

I grind and polish a geode, then cut a groove all around the edge. Then wrap a silver wire around geode in the groove and loop it at the top to fit a cord or chain.
using a dop stick for lapidary
Просмотров 9 тыс.5 лет назад
How to attach a dop stick to a stone for grinding and polishing. One way to do lapidary is to attach your stone to a stick that just makes it easier to work with. You cut pieces of dowel and heat up some special wax. You take the dowel and dip it into the heated wax and then push it on the back of the warmed up stone and it sticks. Once it cools it's ready to grind.

Great video, very informative
Cool info. Great video. I needed to know that. Thanks. Jerilyn in GA.
amazing thank you I use gorilla glue on a golf tee other people use super glue on a head of a nail
Thank you so much! I just received a 20 lb block of amazonite and I'm dying to get started. Video much appreciated!
I was wondering if there was another option of maybe drilling a small hole in the top of it instead of having the wire around the outside of it but that is absolutely gorgeous
sure you could do that. on a lot of geodes it would knock some crystals out on the why through.
I’m just getting started with working with rocks and trying to shine them using those wheels. I have been for over two years tumbling rocks that I find in Wisconsin and Illinois and I’ve got some beautiful rocks that I have found a lot of Jasper a lot of quartz, etc. but thank you so much for just sharing this information because it helps me to figure out what I have to do next to actually make jewelry out of some of the stones that I have.
thanks appreciate your comment
Do you have to use a wax melter ?
yes for sure. its very hard for me to film myself and remember to show everything. www.lapidarymart.com/collections/dop-pots
Great - and told how to get wax back off stick!
Awesome piece
How long does the wax last? I mean is it reusable? What if the wax gets dirty? Do you ever have to throw it away and start with new wax? Can you mix new wax to refresh the old wax?
you can use it over and over. it does start to get rubbery so you just srcape it out when its hot and put more in. its inexpensive

Thanks for the video Quick, simple and to the point plus and no annoying music! Insert smiley face icon here --- X
Beautiful
CJ isn’t epoxy. Vacuuming that short space of time with draw the air out of the cracks only, not the rock itself. Vacuum pumps are supposed to run hot. Soaking times for 2x is for wood, not high density things like rock. Sorry but this video is spreading misinformation.
I just tried this with mecican turquoise chalk...total failure
Very Very useful ,interesting, and necessary. Thank you
I have some beautiful natural rough gemstones for you ruclips.net/channel/UCu6L_p1ONScaWo84r-2IdzAvideos
In my opinion we should drill hole on the middle of polishing process stones, because after we can take out some chipped! Thanks for your video and attention!!!!
Nice job, man! Please, Make video about an explanation of scratches on stone or minerals, which one disk is cut of all deep scratches, etc!? Thanks so much!!!
Señor .¿como preparara el pegamento?...porfavor.
Alao ❤️❤️🙃🙃💎
Where do you buy your belts?
Wow mazing sir 🤗
W Where do you get your belts?
Dave, that is the dirtiest shop I’ve ever seen.
Thanks. I'm about to try this with some very fractured pietersite. Can you tell me what rock you are stabilizing as I can't quite catch the name?
Hi, just got the message. That method will work really well on pietersite. I do the stone until almost finished then stabilize, then maybe the last two or three wheels.
Who keeps the metric system down? We do. We dooooo. - Simpsons, stone cutters episode.
Sometimes when I'm selling someone will stop and sing that song. I love it
Can you show drilling a hole in flint?
I don't have any flint. But it's very hard and would be difficult to drill through. You would have to go slow.
How do the gem out of the rubies that look like hexagons?
If the crystal is really well formed it will be a hexagon. The rubies in ruby in fuchsite are not well formed and not of gem quality.
Dave, i am a wood carver but starting to get into stone work. Very helpful videos. Would love to see more, cheers bud.
Thanks, i'm having trouble thinking of topics
Daves are all cool. That stuff sounds good and hard. 😁
Is that a stabilized stone or a raw one? If raw means, aren't those very fragile?
that was not stabilized, some is ok to cut just like it is.
@@DaveTheStonecutter Thank you... And the video is great 😊
Can I drill moldavite.plesse respond back
I would not do that, a good piece of Moldavite is worth more to keep it natural. So should be put in some kind of setting that just holds it. Of course that is just my opinion and you could drill being vary careful because it can be break easily being like glass.
The very best from indonesia, almost glass clear bro👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you Patricia
You are obviously very experienced! I am very new to rock tumbling, not sure if I’ll get into making jewelry but I’d appreciate any help you can offer in purchasing affordable unfinished stones from around the world, as well as identifying and classifying rocks I find right here in Norfork AR. Thank You for an Outstanding informative video! Dan
find out about gem and mineral clubs in your area. They should be able to help you. They may have sale or swaps and know of any gem and mineral shows around
Thanks Dave!
Thanks!
Can this soft material be tumbled after stabilizing?
soft material is difficult to tumble. Only put it with other soft material and maybe skip the course grit and shorten the times
yes,the problem is when you go to drill holes on more hard material, like quartz cristal,it take a lot of time...
Wow ! Love the finished product!looks gorgeous. How would you stabilise flourite? I have a piece of blue john i wanted to polish for my girlfriend.
I don"t think flourite would stablize or work for lapidary. Most i know of wouldn't anyway.
Great set up Dave 👌👏👏👏 I wonder what are your favorite polishing compounds ? I am just starting out ...lol a newbie 🙅 and any advice would be appreciated 😘
i usually just use the diamond wheels. Sometimes i will use tin oxide and hard buffing wheel or zam
Not enough explaining going on.
Looks easy here... But it's not. Amazonite is super hard. You need diamond bits for it for sure.
I like this👌 A new subscriber from Sweden🇸🇪 here😀👍 Thinking of making some jewelry of the stones I collected all these years ( You can have look on my channel if you want of course 🤣😉) Your channel will definitely be a " go to " place when I start🤩😍. Thanks for sharing , And keep them vids coming. VGV Prospecting 🇸🇪
This is tadulako ruby, not corodum ruby. Correct me
corundum, ruby just not gem quality
What model is your dremel-like tool?
i think it is a dremel, I have a few and use the cheaper ones with a flex shaft for drilling because of the water and don't want to get a more expensive fordom hand piece wet
GREATLY appreciated sharing your valuable skill and work..
I appreciate that!
Thank you ✨
thank you....I have not found anyone else who explained this process. do you buy your bits from fordam or elsewhere?
I think Johnson Bros Lapidary sell them. 1mm is small and very bendy 1.5 is good as well. I bought mine from china and got a great deal on 100 of each size, don't think they have them now
