Welcome to my channel. My passions are photography and my XJ and unfortunately for me, none of the two is cheap. Here I will try to introduce you to both of them. First to my "Green Goblin", my modified XJ, and (if it will ever be ready), I'm hoping to do some videos about my photography trips.

I have a few pieces of advise. 1: Speak louder and more clearly, I has to raise the volume considerably. 2: Show more of the vehicle than just one side view. I'm curious to see what was involved and how the swap actually looks.
Thanks for the comment. For the first one, I agree, I have to speak louder. For the second one, I had already uploaded 2 other videos showing the Jeep from all sides, inside and engine compartment. And I have another from last year, same topic, if you like to check them :)
@madjimms Showing what's involved at every step would require a series of time-consuming videos.. Footage/photos would have to be taken at every step. I try to explain to people what I went through so far but unless they see every step and/or have ever undertaken a not-straightforward motor swap, they don't get it.
@@miked5789you are absolutely right. In my case, I was not present for the entire process of the swap so I don't have videos, even if I know what was done every step of the way. I do have photos, but they would not make a very good video. I think I will just try to make a series of videos taking the car piece by piece and explaining the process.
@@thegreengoblin76I had considered doing the same after the fact BUT after having completed & documented many of my projects over the last 15yrs or so, l realized had no desire to do so. Sounds wierd but going back to do that with this project, had I documented every little thing, would just lead to posttraumatic stress.
In the middle of my XJ/M57N swap, this man is correct. There is way too much to explain/clarify in this response atm. Research, set your budget then add 50%. All in all, not the hardest swap BUT if I had to do it again i'd do it a bit differently. The 2nd time would cost me less $, less hassle, less time, less hair-pulling. If you want a Jeep w/ m57 that's comfortable & good-to-go, get an E53 X5.
@@miked5789 thanks, man, hope you get yours done soon. You're absolutely right, if I had to do it again, I'd do it differently. But, it is what it is, the music is playing and I have to dance to it :))
Nice to see an XJ in the EU. We've got two XJ's here, her's being a stock '89 while mine is a minor lifted '87. I was just browsing to see what others might have done as I finish off my "quality of life improvements" as I stripped the interior down and bedlined the floor from the cargo area to lower front firewall. I also refurbished the headliner, while it was out I installed Kilmat decoupler as needed with some Siless insulation on the ceiling, as well as the flooring, quarter panels plus the doors. I heard the door right at the beginning as you were getting in to start it and it made me cringe a bit, but I know you will address this when given the chance. But very well done on the conversion. 👍✌
Oh, yes, the work is never done. Still have some issues I want to adress, but for the moment I am happy that it's running fine. Thanks for the comment!
I'm in the same process.
Thanks for your videos!
Good luck!
If you want, watch my last video. Maybe my experience will benefit you a bit with your swap.
@@thegreengoblin76 I see all your videos tanks!
How did you connect rpm signal? Cheers 😅
I would highly recommend adding support around the frame where you drilled those holes! Love the build
Why not bmw e53 transmission? Infact you can get m57 engine and transmission intact ofcourse you have to make an adapter to connect it to the transfercase but you will have either 6 speed manual or automatic
I didn't want to cut any unnecessary holes in my console for the bmw gearbox shifter and such. I like this setup. It's not an offroad build, it's a daily driver.
Salutare!

@@thegreengoblin76 I’m on the middle of the swap but I’m not sure if there is room for the intercooler and the ac condenser. Was the factory intercooler good enough?
@@cesarsuarez2954 not very good. I fitted mine in the front bumper. Since I made this video I put back the original bumper, I had no real need for the which. Hi, I've got a 2001 VM diesel XJ. I'd love to do the M57 swap. Besides the engine and gearbox adapter plate, what other mods were needed to make the swap work?
Hi. It all depends what you want. But as a minimum, the engine, ECU, adaptor plate, engine mounts and a good electrician :) no two swaps are the same :)
Thanks for the reply. Just trying to get an idea of how much it could cost and how many headaches it'll cause.
@@WillJotner well, just to give an idea, I've been working on mine for a little over two years. Almost everything on the car is new. And I still have a little issue to deal with. The idea is if you are like me and you want a daily driver, something you can take out on the road, not just on a trail from time to time, then be prepared to spend time and money :)
Yeah that's the issue. It's my daily driver, and not being a mechanic myself I'd have to pay someone to do it. So I reckon it could get very expensive. Think I'll have to stick with the VM for now (which tbh is not as bad as everyone says. Could just do with a not more hp and fuel economy).

Nice Job....let us know how the test drive goes and what happened with that clutch disc. Quick? regardling your swap: did you use (2) fuel pumps, the original XJ pump plus an inline pump?. Thx
Thanks! The clutch problem was fixed. Seems that the disc was a bit too thick and was not completely disengaging when the pedal was pressed, or something like that. But it's ok now. Unfortunately I had to leave for my job and I only got to drive it once 😢 oh, well..for the next three months I have only memories 😂

Your injectors are bad
Probably they are not great, but what makes you say that?

What happened with the clutch?!
Looks like something is wrong with the pressure plate. I won't know until we take the gearbox down, but it doesn't really go into gear 😢😢😢
Well, looking at the original hybrid disc seems to have an offset of 'zero' let's say.. The cut down XJ disc has it's friction surface offset to one direction. Sounds like it's not engaging all the way?

Quick question: where did you mount the ECU/DME? I ask because the individual BMW harnesses for the injectors, glow plugs, engine electrics aren't terribly long. If mounted in the engine bay, it'd need a housing...
You're right, we had to fabricate a housing for the ECU on the driver side in the engine bay, roght where the battery used to be, and we moved the battery on the other side.
Ahhhh, that's what that box is. Wasn't sure... Thanks.
How much lift are you running? would a bit more have helped with the clearance instead?
3 inch lift. But it's about lateral distance to the driveshaft, not the lift. If I drove over obstacles, it would touch.
Was this motor out of an E46 or e39? How much do their oilpans differ? Wanna know if one is a better fit clearance-wise when I start looking.... BTW killin it with the tempo of the update videos. Thx & keep it up!
@@miked5789 it was from e39. I really don't know how the oil pans differ. But if you don't plan to keep the AC compressor, you can move your alternator and T/C and you won't need to worry about the pan touching anything

Thanks for this video... Planning an m57 into XJ. Going between manual & automatic. A follow-up video with the clutch working properly with the cutdown disc would be much appreciated. Which FW would you be using? PMC has one but it's aluminum with a replaceable surface, wouldn't be my first choice. BUT FCP Engineering has a 6kg(13.2lb) alloy steel unit for the same price(just under €400). Is that not too light for the M57??
@miked5789 thanks for the comment. I will upload the next video as soon as I finish. The new flywheel is actually a modified dualmass FW. Here the aluminium ones are way too expensive, going to about 1000 euros, so a big hit to my budget, having sunk a lot of money in my XJ already.
