This movie captured such a wonderful sense of hopelessness when it came to a tripod appearing.

I always loved this scene in this movie, literally humanity unleashing everything it has against the invaders (except nuclear bombs), we see all types of ground and air combat vehicles in action (the most notable being tanks, fighter jets, combat and helicopters), that squadron of helicopters all firing so many missiles at once is so epic, however, the scary thing about this is that the soldiers claim that in the end they are only delaying them so that people can escape and take shelter, damn, If it were not for the shields, the tripods would have been in serious trouble. The human army is rarely effective in combat against aliens with machines in science fiction movies. It's not on topic, but imagine that somewhere in the universe there exists a race with weapons power that would be able to pulverize humanity and its army in just months or weeks, infinite space is terrifying.

This scene is existentially haunting because it’s like humanity’s last stand, and even the dialogue proves the military knows they have no chance. This movie was so fucking good. Enough said.

This is why people misunderstand how the light side of the force works. It isn’t that the jedi can’t feel love or be attached to someone in a relationship. But that they must be emotionally stable enough to not mass murdering rampage just because something happened to that person that was completely out of that persons control. And that grieving and feeling loss isn’t in itself a bad thing. But drowning yourself in grief and anger is. Thats why the jedi council must approve of any marriages because they have to make sure you are emotionally stable and not going to go crazy.
