Thank you for another great video.
Thank you for watching our video!
Tip.......put washers under the back side of your rivits when fastening to plastic.
Thank you for your feedback.
That solar power bank will NEVER power that repeater. Ask me how I know. I tried the same idea with a meshtastic setup. With a 10ma draw, in the blazing Florida summer sun, the battery bank was empty in three days. Those solar battery banks are a joke. I updated with a 12" 5v solar panel charging a 8000mah 1s RC car battery. This setup actually worked.
Thank you for your feedback.
Hi, I tried to program various 888s radios but after writing, the radio remains with the channel open and the green LED on... I also tried using the boafeng application... it's always the same
I have programmed literally 100s of the Baofeng 888s radios without any problems. Reminder to always read from the radio first into Chirp and save a copy, and then copy and paste the channels into Chirp you wish into what you read from the radio and write it to the radio. Don't forget to save the new program. this will prevent you from having issues with potentially different firmware revisions between radios.
@@theoilykrafter thank. yes, I believe you. until 2022 I was able to copy all the 888s, even with the boafeng program... but after that they always remain with the green LED and open channel and when I read the frequencies they are the same as the original source. Can I send you a video to help you understand the problem with my radios after programming? I thank you
@@theoilykrafter this is my problem whit all 888s - ruclips.net/video/cB0c9IXF8Ks/видео.html
I have some Baofeng 5RM’s 4 have the same version 14 and 2 have version 11. Can I transfer version 14 data to the two version 11’s? Also, is one version blocked? Which is better? Or should I go to Baofeng Website and upgrade the 11’s to version 14 or whichever version is the latest? HELP😮😮😮
Thank you for watching. You should be able to use Chirp to export your channel programs and then import them into a blank tab in Chirp for your other Baofeng model. I would suggest always starting with reading from your radio. Save that to a file. Then importing the channel program into Chirp then write to the 2nd radio. Don't forget to save the radio program under a different file name.
Hi, thank you for a great build, I note the file link does not work. Thank you anyway.
@Sgtoscarcolon 4 hours ago Hi, excellent and very well explained. Very useful detailed video. Thanks!!! What were the HT settings? Squelch off/on?
Sorry somehow the original comment got deleted. Here is the answer I tried to post when RUclips accidentally deleted the comment and support was unable to retrieve it. @theoilykrafter 1 minute ago Thank you. I recommend setting the squelch level to 0 unless you have a lot of noise. If you have a lot of noise try it set to 1 but no higher. The only other radio settings were the frequency. That will be determined by the Winlink gateway that you are attempting to connect to. In my case it was 145.030 simplex with no offset or PL Tone. The volume knob setting on the radio will be determine during your tuning setup. As you saw in the video you have to play with the volume knob settings as it has an effect on the Drive Level, S/Noise, and VU.
I need some clarification. Help me understand. Why do you need to program any transmit settings in the Receive Radio, as it never transmits, and vice versa on the Transmit Radio?
Thank you for your question\feedback. I tend to put both sets of settings in the radios to be thorough.
Two walkie talkies is not a repeater or at least not a good one
Thanks for your feedback. This was a project to see if it would work. I am no way recommending using two handhelds as a critical purpose repeater. This would be for an emegency situation and you didn't have a commerical repeater available.
Please keep quiet
Did you have a question ?
please try to use power supply if working good thank you sir
Thank you for watching.
You did a great job that was a so useful video
Thank you for watching our video and for the kind words!
Thanks. I'm a couple of years behind you on this but appreciate your help catching up. W5XTT tom.
Thank you for watching. We are glad to help.
Way back in the late 80's and early 90's my Ham buddies built and operated half a dozen "Repeaters". We NEVER had to use cheap "toys" from Communist China. And a few of these "Genuine" Repeaters are still going strong! Even after a full third of a Century of hard, daily use.
Thank you for watching the video. This is meant to be a temporary scenario repeater. Like a camping weekend or something simlar.

Hi - How do you set the channel spacing?
Use a Windows computer, running Chirp, and a programming cable.
The plug to power the radio what is the #s and where can I find it? Hopefully I can find one with other end a USB to then plug into solar bank. Can you tell me where you found and what it's called for the sma and so239(?) Plug mounted to box? Tks
The cables came in the bundle with the radios and antennas. Here is a link to the cable to charge the batteries. amzn.to/3X5Aa1m If you need the batteries and cables try this link amzn.to/3YHk7YQ
Great video. What did you program in the channel freq, is the 145.030 one that you use the most?
Thank you. Most of the VHF Winlink nodes in my area use 145.030. That is why I programmed it into my radio. I could have also just used VFO mode since it does not use an offset or a PL Tone.
Thank you for sharing this video.
You are welcome.
Good Job..... thanks for you ,,, this is A65PP UAE ,,,, 73 brother

Little 20w duplexer
Thank you for your feedback.
I tried the 720 second and the image came out way too dark. Like it was burnt. Any suggestions
Thank you for watching our video! I'm not sure why it turned out dark. I'd suggest checking the program color profile with the ink you are using. You should be able to get the color profile for your printer from the company you got your ink from to make sure that they match. I have found that not all the programs support the color profiles needed for sublimation right off the bat, you have to change them.
Thanks so much… I would have loved to have seen in the video the CAT control actually controlling the radio. It seems you showed both cables working but not the advantage of one cable over the other. But thank you for taking the time to verify settings. I have the exact setup and just got it working - of course the day BEFORE I watched this video. But this will allow me to go back in and double check my settings. Thnx!!! W5HIM
You are welcome. I had several things I was trying to display at the same time. I like the one with CAT control so I do not have to change any settings on the actual radio. Only unplug the microphone and plug in the Digirig cable.
@@theoilykrafter So does CAT on the 578 only control PTT? Does it change the radio frequency? I am very new at Winlink and my only radio experience is on a 578 and 878.
It does trigger PTT. I will have to test to see if it will change the frequency. I will be starting testing for the AnyTone 878 and Winlink.
Greg AI5HV here. I was able to make both the AnyTone 578 audio only cable and the AnyTone 578 CAT and audio cable work. Tests were performed with the following equipment: AnyTone 578UVIIIPro Digirig Rev 1.9 AnyTone 578 audio only cable AnyTone 578 CAT and audio cable Windows 11 laptop With the audio only cable the user MUST do the following: Radio setting changes · Set the squelch to 0: Menu / Settings / 1. Radio Set / Other Func / 6. Ana Sq Level / 1. Ana SQ OFF was set to 1. It will work if there is a lot of background noise that you set the Ana SQ Level to 1. · Change the audio to mic: Menu / Settings / 1. Radio Set / Voice Func / 7. Speaker Mode / 1. Mic Spk was set to 3. Both · Change the mic type from serial to voltage detection for PTT to work: Menu / Settings / 1. Radio Set / 4. Other Func / 28. Hand Type / 2. Volt-Det. (Note: Don’t forget to change it back to 1. Uart-Det for normal hand mic operations.) In WSJTX, PTT works fine with the audio only cable for testing. In VARA FM the PTT setting MUST be as follows (the COM port will vary from one computer to the next depending on what COM port is assigned in Device Manager) PTT Via COM Port is COM3 and PTT Pin RTS With the CAT and audio only cable the user can leave the settings as follows: Radio setting changes · Set the squelch to 0: Menu / Settings / 1. Both (This setting can be left set to Both but the user will hear the data transmit tones on the radio speaker). · Change the mic type from serial to voltage detection for PTT to work: Menu / Settings / 1. Radio Set / 4. Other Func / 28. Hand Type / 1. Uart-Det. DOES NOT NEED TO BE CHANGED. In VARA FM the PTT setting MUST be as follows (the COM port will vary from one computer to the next depending on what COM port is assigned in Device Manager) PTT Via CAT Brand: Anytone Port: COM3 Model: AT-D578UV Bauds: 115200 RTS I even tested unplugging the CAT cable from the Digirig in this configuration and confirmed that PTT DOES NOT WORK without the CAT cable plugged in. In WSJTX, PTT works fine with the audio only cable for testing, but it does not appear to work using the CAT and audio cable. There is no entry to select a radio type of AnyTone 578 within this software. Using the CAT and audio cable appeals to me because I can leave the radio settings alone and not have to change anything.
Thank you for posting this.
Why not use the digital caliber?
Are you referring to digital calipers ?
@@theoilykrafter I don’t understand why you are marking your hoes with a hole saw. I guess you go with what works. You could have divided the width in half marked 1 line all the way through each hole. The line would run the length of the black plate. Mark one end then measure to center of each hole from that point. Mark along the center line you established in step one. Bam 💥 precision.
I like your video. My experience with doing this very sameproject was a jolt to my brain. 3 or 4 trys and i found my sweet spot. Now i did mine for gmrs . I used a much bigger box. I put a 10 ap hour lipo battery in and a bigger solar charger. Now most of the rest isthesame . I did find the charge cables to be a problem . Did away with them that have the chip and lights. Plain jane usb cable and no more issues. Also i used very different antennas . AND THE ANTENNAS wanted to be about 6 to 8 feet part. I will be doing a whole new set in a couple months. I hope that works for how you plan to use it. Oh oh i found that i am getting approximately 10 to 15 miles coveage in a circle around where i set it up depending on weather its an ht or mobile rig . Mobile rgs clearly get better rsults.
Thank you for sharing your experience. It is always good to hear from other folks with different experiences so we can learn from one another.
you dont need 2 antennas
If I add a duplexer you are correct, then I could run a single antenna.
Thanks Uncle.
You are welcome.
My CHIRP program says that there is "No response from radio" after clicking "OK" to "communicate" with it. Do you mind telling me how can I fix that?
There are a number of things it could be. A bad programming cable, an in correct baud rate on the COM port, an incorrect data bits and stop bit setting. It could also be that you have the wrong model radio selected or a radio that is not supported by Chirp.
Anyone in Washington state that can help me with this
Are you wanting help to build the repeater ?
I'm in Washington too, been doing a ton of research it doesn't seem too hard. Just have to figure out if you want 1 or 2 radios, there's a few ways to do it. If I get it figured out I'll keep you updated. This video was a ton of help, I'm just gonna wing it and see what happens.
Another great video.
Thank you.
You worked real hard to make that look professional, but you forgot to take off the label that came on the box when you bought it ... nice setup though. I like it.
Thank you for watching our video! We don't mind that the label is there, we like sharing what we're using with our viewers. Thanks for the compliments!
Only if your cross banding will this be maybe worth while.. for a same band repeater such as gmrs with only 5mhz offset these radios will desense and trip all over each other without a duplexer. Personal experience.. you need at least -80db seperation between that 5mhz spread to be able to use more than a few watts and its input radio be able to hear anything beyond the transmit radio.
Thank you for your feedback.
power supply? not sure how long 3600mAH batteries will last for on standby, but pre going the whole 9 yards with solar, would battery eliminators connected to a small motorcycle battery be worth doing for a mid term repeater solution?? ""BL-5 Battery Eliminator Replacement for Baofeng UV-5* - pretty sure these have a built in regulator (they're designed to be plugged into car lighter socket) 2 for $20 on Amazon
How long they last would of course be directly related to how much traffic is on the repeater.
I had one of those cos-play antennas I bought for UHF CB (477mHZ), "Bingfu Foldable CS Tactical SMA Female Ham Radio Antenna 2-Pack Dual Band VHF UHF 136-520MHz 42.5 inch Antenna" - 2 for $23, what could go wrong? up to 520mhz printed on the base yet it had a SWR of 8 with the whip, base by itself was about 1.2 haha... Be interested to hear what the Arbbree SWR's are?
I will have to attempt to measure the SWR and let you know.
This is a great video and exactly to the point, however I'm still unclear why I would be doing this. Is it to make sure that all my BF888s radios share the same frequencies for each channel? And you replaced the settings with an existing file; where did you get that file?
I used Chirp to create the program that was written to the radio. After programming the first radio. I read from the next radio and copy and pasted the frequency table into the tab that I just read from the radio after saving the original configuration. Then after pasting would save and write to each subsequent radio to ensure that they all have the exact same program.
Please attach the name of item using,
I don't understand your question.
Nice build watching from Philippines
Thank you.
I like this design! Having the fuse block on the lid right next to the switches and accessories is smart
Thank you for your feedback.
Nice idea 👍
Thank you.
I thought the radios should not be charged while they are on?
I know the manual specifically indicates that while in the charging cradle.
Very cool, a suggestion though. You could have glued the things to the inside rather than running screws through.
Thank you for your comments.
Kinda looks like a rats nest to me. 😊
Thanks for the feedback.
Very cool.
Thank you.
just missing a real inverter.
Agree. With the Group 31 sized battery it doesn't leave a lot of room for an inverter of a decent capacity. Trying to figure out a place to install it. Maybe attached it inside the lid.
dump the uv5rs ,,,, there junk ,,,,,, get 2 uv13 pro v2 ,,,better receive and kicks out 7.5 watts and 5 dollas cheaper lol or the best radio for transmit would be the Retevis RT86 , best long range radio ive ever had, also that solar panel on that power bank wont cut it
Thank you for your feedback.
You been underwater too long....
Great job sir
Thank you.
Congratulations..!!
Thank you.
Is thier a reason ur doing a neg shift & only.600offset for a reason since normally it's + and 05.000 or is setting the direction and offset doesn't matter as long as it's the same on the all radio s
Transmit is offset Receive by 600KHz. Given this specific setup I had to configure it this way to function. I could have used a duplexer but then it wouldn't have been VHF only or UHF only. It would have used VHF and UHF in order to function. Hopefully that answer helps.
U have a Pic of ur setup the video was blurry
at 22:39 in the video there is a very clear picture of the inside of the setup. You can also check the playback settings of the video and make sure that it is set to at least 720P if not 1080P.
Another great video. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for your comments.
