Is Intermezzo by Sally Rooney Actually Good? Reading Vlog + Review
I was so so so so excited to read Intermezzo by Sally Rooney - it was such a privilege to receive this book and get to share my thoughts with you!
This book was different for Sally Rooney - I found the characters more emotionally intelligent than her others and didn't find myself wanting to scream due to lack of communication lol - but watch my review near the end for more on that:)

    This is such an interesting video about something that I have never thought about. When it comes to nonfiction books, I love annotating and I have to do it because otherwise I will not really take in what I have read. I love messy relationships but I stand corrected that this book is viral because it is written by sally rooney. Period. Your review isn't very objective rather it is showing your love for sally rooney as a fan and your passion for liking her writing. I mean VALID! why the hell not! But if this book was written by any other author, the story itself isn't really so interesting. Actually its been done so many times. But I guess I'll have to give it a try though, this is not going to be a high priority.

      I am interested to where you've seen it done before? I love exploring sibling relationships and haven't found many in the lit fic genre. I would argue that all of rooney's stories on the service aren't all that compelling - beautiful world where are you is one of my favourite novels ever but just the blurb on the back doesn't sound that interesting. It is how Rooney writes and how she fleshes out her characters that makes it amazing. Of course I have bias having liked Rooney's other work, but I would say it if I didn't love the book.

      @@CreativityDiaries There are a lot of Urdu books that deals with messy siblings. One that is translated into english is called The Idle stance on the Tippler pigeon. I love promoting translated fiction books so genre books are my jam! 😝As a reader, I love nothing more than finding the perfect book irrespective of who has written it. But I often feel with prominent names that, the books are massively overhyped and not attractive. However, thanks to marketing, they are everywhere, but that is both a pro and a con. A vampire but not vampire book that I highly recommend is House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson. (You'll get what I mean if you look up the synopsis.) I read it last spooky season and LOVED it. Its a slow kinda Dickensian type world start. A woman who feels out of options applies to a job as a "blood maiden" for a wealthy house. The story builds to a super gory ending. I loved Henderson's writing so much that I am about to start her new release "An Academy of Liars" which is a datk academia book. PS: I try to make TBRs and then my mood says otherwise lol. I wanted to read Once and Future Witches but then I got sucked into A Darker Shade of Magic for the first time. I will probably continue after the read I mentioned above. I ditched Jack after that White Nights thing. I live in Ukraine, and that Western uncritical inherited obsession with Russian classics just feels like a bad joke at this point. Most of that literature is overrated at best, and most of you guys love it because it's acceptable level of exotic and it allows you to consider yourself familiar with Eastern European art without thinking why you haven't encountered that many Ukrainian, Romanian, Moldovan, Czech, Slovenian etc authors. I couldn't help but question the judgement of a guy who thought it was appropriate to hype up a book by an imperialist who would've supported the hell out of what Russia's doing right now and that Dostoevsky's tiresome, forcefully profound, 'suffering = divine' writing is a sign of a genius. Kinda shame tho, he's really charismatic, even though my taste in books is vastly different.

    • @Readatrix
      @Readatrix 18 дней назад

      I appreciate your perspective. I don't think people will ditch (classic) Russian authors, but there are so many other perspectives out there that we don't consider, including stories that represent those victimized by Russia. I would love some book suggestions, if you have any and would like to share them (translated to English) of Eastern-European authors, specifically Slovenia. (My maternal grandmother was America born of Slovenian heritage and her parents were immigrants from there. I'd love recs from any of the countries. I've searched a bit on my own, but had no luck. Obviously, you didn't sign up to offer me recs, and so your ignoring this is fine.

    • @justwonder1404
      @justwonder1404 16 дней назад

      @@Readatrix Yes, realistically, I don't think this will ever happen and I'm not even sure that's what I want, I'd rather people just were a little more critical when talking about Russian literature and more aware of its context. There's more than one way to read a text, of course. You flatter me with your request but this is where I must confess my ignorance. I'm currently sort of re-discovering Ukrainian literature for myself along with reading books in English, and there's so much more that I don't know about this wider region's literature it's crazy. I believe we did read some Slavic authors in school (which was a while ago) but our world literature curriculum was basically overrun by the Russians with, obviously, some European and American classics, so I'm at square one. I bought two Moldovan books when I was in Chisinau and am very slowly trying to get through one of them with my rudimentary Romanian and Google translate lol. In general, the language barrier is the main problem. Not that many Ukrainian books are known worldwide and, after your reply, I looked into Slovenian books and can't seem to find many translated into Ukrainian. Some are translated into English, 'Southern scum go home!' and 'Alamut' sound pretty interesting, but as I haven't read them (I probably should tho) I can't say if I recommend them. If talking about Ukraine as the country I know most about, Serhii Zhadan's *The Orphanage* is the go-to when reading about the current war in Eastern Ukraine, it's a rather local story set in the time of the beginning of war in 2014, very gritty but also very humane. *Marina and Serhii Diachenkos* connection to Ukraine is pretty questionable as, to my knowledge, they moved first to Russia, then to the US. But I must admit their fantasy works are like nothing else and there should be at least some translations. I can't find English versions of their books that I read years ago (The Gate-Keeper, The Ritual and The Copper King) but Vita Nostra - that I haven't read - is translated into English. Not a fan of their life choices but they are definitely talented. It seems like Valeryan Pidmohylny's *The City* is finally translated, if you can find it, I totally recommend checking it out, it's a modernist novel about a young man trying to make it in Kyiv in 1920's, set in a really interesting if sinister era. If you're into folklore, Lesia Ukrainka's *The Forest Song* is available online in English, it's a pretty quick read. It's a play, hopefully the translation does it justice. This is what from the top of my head what I'm familiar with and what is available abroad. If you search #ukrainianliterature tag on insta there's a chance to find more. I try to occasionally post on my bookstagram about Ukrainian books and authors in English getting translated, but I still have a lot to cover and, again, not all of it is translated. ...sorry about all the text, I got carried away😅Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

      You yourself haven't read any and you expect the entire world to? People who love reading are mostly open minded about reading books from different cultures and races and ethnicities. Its not that people would intentionally ignore a really good ukrainian book if it was translated and recommended by atleast one person. Even before social media, people only read or discovered new books mostly by word of mouth. If people who are part of the culture don't spread the word, how is someone supposed to randomly sit and go hey let me read a ukrainian book even though i don't know if theyre even translated into english. I understand your point about being more critical towards russian literature but then again, which book or author according to you is overhyped or overrated? There is a reason why people love most of these authors and their works and they do relate to them deeply. White nights talks about loneliness which is so relevant in today's times so its no wonder it blew up on social media. I'm really sorry but not every person who reads a dostoevsky book sits down and looks up on his political views and if he would've supported Russia politically or not. If there is someone out there who does then it has nothing to do with literature and has more to do with that person's individual political inclination.

    Last year he read over 200 books, this works out to just under 4 books per week. Anyone that tries to tell you they are able to thoroughly consider and analyse nearly 4 books per week is lying both to you and to their self. The main reason I've stopped watching his content is because the commentary in all of his reviews is so superficial and unoriginal, like he's just read the cliff-notes of the book. Your rating or opinion of a book means practically nothing if you haven't been taking notes and analysing it as you go along (especially if it's your first time reading it), otherwise you might as well have simply not read it lol. You can take this thorough approach and still read 100 books in a year with a lot of work and consistency, but 200?

    • @CreativityDiaries

      @@GuyGetsBetter I’m not sure how much I agree here - some books don’t really need that much analyzing and they’re lighter reads. He likes Murakami’s work. He didn’t slander it. He said the quality of his work is great, he just called him out for not being able to write women (and rightfully so). Holding an author accountable for things like sexism does not mean they are “slandering” them or saying that their work in its entirety is objectively “bad”.

      @reihino6347 this. You can love an author's work and still absolutely drag them for their shitty portrayl of something or their less than stellar politics concerning... the human rights of others.

    Hi, great video! I'd definitely recommend reading the second book in the monk and robot duology called "A Prayer for the Crown-Shy" :) I think I might love it even more if that's possible

    Hiii, I watched your video earlier today😊 I really loved this video, your opinions are very well thought out and I appreciate your analysis. White Nights was already on my list (b/c of Jack Edward’s Lol) but I now added Crying in H Mart as well😊. Your doing a great job with your videos💛👏!

    I've not read any of these, but I'm gonna add these to my reading list. I honestly enjoy the general talk about the book, rather than a specific rating. On the subject of they/them pronouns: in Chamoru (language of people from Guam, Saipan, and Rota) there are no gendered pronouns. "Gui" is the pronoun for he/she/it/them, so I agree that they/them pronouns really aren't confusing, because most people can understand context.

      Thank you - I also enjoy talking more in-depth. It makes for a very chatty video but I think moe informative nonetheless. So interesting about your other point! Not confusing at all I agree

    Another good rec: the stranger in the life book by Mitch albom, it’s 271 pages and very focused on how you view the world (the he blurb on the back for whoever wants it:” what would happen if we cried out to god for help and someone claiming to be god actually appeared before us? In Mitch albums profound novel, a group of shipwrecked passengers must face that challenge when a strange man they pull from the water says he can save them all, but only if they believe in him.”
