I was lucky enough as an excited 16 year old to see Phil with both Brand X and Genesis on the same day at the 'Midsummers Night Dream at Knebworth.

Along with Robin Lumley on keys is the great Peter Robinson, a brilliant player in every respect. My band opened for Brand X in Chicago in 1982, Robinson had the first Prophet V I’d ever seen. I asked him how voices it was, he held up 5 fingers…

For those who like this kind of thing, this is the kind of thing they like.

Although the studio version is far better, there is no debate about Brand X's world-class level of musicianship, edgy, inventive and innovative. Most people do not recognize how great a drummer Phil Collins was and special shout outs to John Goodsall who was a great guitarist and Percy Jones who never attained the level of recognition he deserved as one of the greats of his instrument. As far as being an original, he was on the level of Jaco.

Love Brand X! The first time I heard Nuclear Burn I flipped!

Once you put aside the name Phil Collins comes with its own baggage and listen to his drumming you soon realise there were times he was great. His Brand X stuff stands out for his ride patterns and for me his best stuff with Genesis was Selling England by the Pound. Some great drumming on there but probably overshadowed a little by the big beasts of prog Carl Palmer, ridiculous snare work and Bill Bruford a rock drummer who manages to blend seamlessly into jazz.

Saw Phil Collins and band play this on his first solo tour. I was blown away by it and subsequently found out that it was from Brand X. I was fortunate enough to get to see Brand X play it in 2018 or 2019.

I loved watching and listening to John Goodsall play, IMO a fantastic player who was at home in many genres. RIP John you brought me so much pleasure.

A short but sweet musical adventure

Compare this version with the Live at Perkins Palace 1982 version (also on YT). Larger band (more percussion lol), higher production values, stronger vocals from Collins, tighter arrangement. But the same drummer's slouch, the posture that, if not noted and corrected soon enough, can kill a drummer's career. Collins is a brilliant drummer. I don't know if his current health issues have anything to do with his back; I truly hope not. But any drummers reading this: please, please be aware of your posture and take care of your back.
