Version 2 starts at 2:37 These are my two attempts at making the song "Only You(And You Alone)" by The Platters instrumental(well, vocal-reduced). In version 1, I took a stereo version of the song(Not sure if it was recorded in stereo or mixed to be "artificial stereo") and inverted one of the channels to cancel out the vocals in audacity. For the 2nd version, I simply took a mono version of th...

    How do I remove the platter to inspect the drive wheels? It seems to be stuck on the spindle or am I missing something?

    • @rbmrecordplayers5758
      @rbmrecordplayers5758 10 месяцев назад

      It pulls off. It's friction fit, so it may be a bit stuck on there. It helps to turn the speed switch to the middle, right before it clicks over to the other speed. That disengages the drive wheels from the platter.

      @davidcarson4421 10 месяцев назад

      As you mention, calling these GI home recorders “lathes” is a misnomer. I had one that was incorporated in two portable cases by Wilcox-Gay, which also included an AM radio. By doing some tinkering and using a sapphire stylus, it was possible to make fairly good recordings

    The second song (the one after Chained To A Memory) is a song called The Last Letter. It was written by Rex Griffin in 1937 and recorded by him in 1939. It was covered by musicians such as Jimmie Davis, The Carter Family, and The Blue Sky Boys. Griffin would later write and record a sequel song called Answer To The Last Letter in 1939.

  • @blackhawksnbullsncubsnbear4615

    The last song is "Maple on the hill", written by Gussie Davis in 1880. I believe he was the first one to record it as well. It has since been covered by musicians such as Vernon Dalhart, The Carter Family, Jean Ritchie, Hank Locklin, and The Tumbleweeds.

      It’s unrestored. I’ve rebuilt the cartridge since I made this video, and everything now works 10/10 besides the recording function. One of the tubes is getting weak and recording needs a lot of power to work, so it only works occasionally with the old tube in there

    How did you do it

    • @rbmrecordplayers5758
      @rbmrecordplayers5758 3 года назад

      The trick to how it turned out so well is that it was recorded in stereo. How stereo recordings are commonly set up is that all vocals play through both left and right speakers, and then the various instruments are split between both speakers as well. The difference is that each instrument either plays through one speaker or the other; not both. This allows me to use a technique called “noise canceling” to perfectly remove the vocals mixed to the center(both left and right speakers).

    The first song is 'Chained To A Memory of You". It was written by Jenny Lou Carson and first recorded by Eddy Arnold on 3/20/1946 and released in September 1946. So the record can't be older than 1946. The second song seems to be a fragment of the song "Keep My Mem'ry in Your Heart" which was recorded and released by Ernest Tubb in February 1945 (and apparently written by him). Of course I have no clue who is singing and we will likely never know.

      Thank you for the info(I’m on my other account right now, so just beat with me). Yeah, someone tore the labels off long ago, so the info written on it is long gone. Someone on Reddit said that it sounds like it was recorded in a bar, and sure enough there were people talking in the back. None of them, however, call the guy singing by a name. So that info will likely be lost forever.
