The Back Of The Winter - folksong
The Heron - folksong by Karine Polwart
Angela Hicks - soprano
Tom Gamble - guitar
Filmed at Castle Howard
***
The back of the winter is broken
And light lingers long by the door
The seeds of the summer have spoken
In gowans that bloom on the shore
By night and day we’ll sport and we’ll play
And delight as the dawn dances over the bay
Sleep blows the breath of the morning away
And we follow the heron home
In darkness we cradled our sorrow
And stoked all our fires with fear
These bones that lie empty and hollow
Are ready for gladness to cheer
Long may you sing of the salmon
And the snow-scented sound of your home
While the north wind delivers its sermon
Of ice and salt water and stone
By night and day we’ll spo...

Angela Hicks - The Snow It Melts The Soonest
Lyrics Flow my teares fall from your springs, Exilde for euer: Let mee morne Where nights black bird hir sad infamy sings, There let mee liue forlorne. Downe vaine lights shine you no more, No nights are dark enough for those That in dispaire their last fortuns deplore, Light doth but shame disclose. Neuer may my woes be relieued, Since pittie is fled, And teares, and sighes, and grones my wearie dayes, my wearie dayes, Of all ioyes haue depriued. Frō the highest spire of contentment, My fortune is throwne, And feare, and griefe, and paine for my deserts, for my deserts, Are my hopes since hope is gone. Harke you shadowes that in darcknesse dwell, Learne to contemne light, Happie, happie they that in hell Feele not the worlds despite. Flow, my tears, fall from your springs! Exiled for ever, let me mourn; Where night's black bird her sad infamy sings, There let me live forlorn. Down vain lights, shine you no more! No nights are dark enough for those That in despair their last fortunes deplore. Light doth but shame disclose. Never may my woes be relieved, Since pity is fled; And tears and sighs and groans my weary days, my weary days Of all joys have deprived. From the highest spire of contentment My fortune is thrown; And fear and grief and pain for my deserts, for my deserts Are my hopes, since hope is gone. Hark! you shadows that in darkness dwell, Learn to contemn light Happy, happy they that in hell Feel not the world's despite. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_My_Tears
A like button is not enough for this kind of jewel
Delightful.
that look @ 0:26🤭
Amazing to think that this was composed in 1596 and was one of John Dowland's signature pieces. And it's still being aired. Beautiful!
This was GORGEOUS!!!!! Thank you for posting this.
I agree to every comment below. Can't say more. Thank you.😍
Beautifully sung and wonderful lute accompaniment 🎶
Beautiful 😊
This lutenist is a wonderful accompanist
Votre voix est un oiseau blanc - qui palpite, tremble, & monte naturellement vers le ciel! Qu'il soit toujours libre!!
Beautiful.
An unusual version of this traditional song. Outstanding to hear such a vocal approach. It's not by John, though - he just has a well-known arrangement, of which 'prittle-prattling' stories is more faithful to the Yorkshire roots than you have. Otherwise, you do it a lot of justice. Thanks a lot.
Une voix chaude et scintillante - tres rare!💓 Pronounciation parfaite, vibrato fluide et bien place, sublime!
A marvelous performance, first rat musicianship. Thank you very much, very much.
This duet is sung best by lovers, but worst by married couples
This is our culture. This is the beauty of which our civilization can be justly proud.
Amazing!
thank you
thank you
thank you
pure beauty
Thank you. Absolutely beautiful
brings memories, wonderful performance...
I first heard this song back in about 1981, written and performed by Silly Wizard. A great night in Glenelg village hall on the west coast of Scotland.
is there a record with thes beautiful foklsongs ?
❤❤❤❤❤
This kicks ass just saying...
Unbelievably
What if she wasn't physically "beautiful". What is in all appearances she was hideous? How many men would actually listen to the song let alone comment.
Ez egy kincs.
Amazing performance, stunning vocals and presentation .
This is so beautifully performed I can't get it out of my head and having heard this, no other version will suffice!. Hats off to Sound and vid engineers too.
I'm so in love with this song and your performance, I can't stop listening.❤
So beautiful! the song, the voice, and the accompaniment.
I think I like this version better than Emma Kirkby's. It's so clear and smooth. Very melodic.
Notable
