    I'm not sure I get the point of this. Like ok sure now we have less cigarette butts, but we've expended a weirdly high amount of energy to do it, and all to get what's already a readily available material? I appreciate the effort in reducing litter on Earth, but if it's not practical or financially viable then it makes no difference, and I don't see the viability in scouring the planet for cigarette butts to burn at high temperatures in sealed vessels (i.e. a lot of effort) just to make carbon. And I know we sealed the vessel to avoid inhaling toxic gases but what after? Is that gas just condensed into a different state? Isn't that just another extra thing to dispose of again?

    • @yoeyyoey8937
      @yoeyyoey8937 7 месяцев назад

      I mean people are still littering them so if we put receptacles for them everywhere then we can collect as many of the new ones as possible

      Well ideally we ought to move to a more circular economy, where as many waste products are then used or reconstituted into something that can be sold again. Not using the waste will only end up in us draining our available resources even faster. This is the idea of sustainable infrastructure, it doesn't serve us much good economically in the short-term at all but it the long term it would save a whole lot of resources. Plus, it may serve as an incentive to properly bin the butts considering 4.5 trillion of them are littered every year!

    • @William_Asston
      @William_Asston 7 месяцев назад

      @@grimcrafterra2691 "ideally we ought" why? when you say "as many waste products", what metric do you mean this by? and with short term and long term, HOW long term do we think vs HOW short term? all these are already being answered constantly all the time in the free market, and if you have a better answer, the financial sector serves for you to execute on it and be rightly rewarded.

    • @William_Asston
      @William_Asston 7 месяцев назад

      Indeed, the value of recycling comes from finding used resources for cheaper than the alternative (producing more of them). The problem is when a resource is so cheap and effective that it's easier to throw it away than to recycle it. The problem lies in that these resources are thrown to the wayside and the cost of disposal is externalized to nonconsenting parties. The resource here isn't the butts/carbon itself, it's the *disposal of butts*. Turning them into carbon is hypothetically a cheaper way of disposing of butts than a shipping them to a landfill. Sadly, I don't think this is the case either lol.

    Correction, sodium carbonate's chemical formula is actually Na2CO3 because the salt requires two molecules of sodium cations, which each form a 1+ charge, to stabilise the 2- charge from the carbonate anion.

    One of the things that I think is often lost when membranes are discussed is just how difficult they can be to produce. with some chemistries, the yields can be all over the place even with sophisticated and expert production chemists and casting operators. "all over the place" means "scrap runs" are common, as opposed to runs that produce a big roll with only part of the roll meeting the validation requirement for that particular product (Membranes are usually post-sorted into different product categories by flux, kind of like "binning" with semiconductors). More than any concern about cost or fouling or even application consistency? Downtime. If your membrane supplier can't absolutely guarantee a steady supply of filter elements, any concerns about fouling or efficiency are moot. This is part of the reason why the industry continues to lean heavily on older chemistries, despite an abundance of newer alternatives. CA and PS may be old, but CA is so cheap and nearly commoditized that you can run it with dirty biological water and even if you get fowling, thee cost allows you to do crazy things like run bleach or other oxidizer through it to extend the service life a bit. I think the only thing that will end the CA "crutch" would be an outright regulatory ban, which is very conceivable considering how utterly disgusting they are to produce (Dioxane and THF and sometimes methanol).... I mean, not that PS and PES are not much better (usually straight DMF or DMF/NMP cast)
