interestingly this locomotive doesn't feature the original Corpet-Brown valve gear but what seems to be a modified hackworth valve gear version! (the one at the MTVS still features the builder's own design)

That's right, track works on the Ybbstalbahn prevented our special train running so we went to Zell am Zee instead. So, I've still not got to the Ybbstalbahn.but the alternative was a good day out. Bazza

Great video. That was indeed an epic journey. You should have included a selfie to illustrate just how sooty you get when you spend a couple of hours in an open truck behind a hard-working steam locomotive.

Thank youfor you films. Brings back memories of my trip as a child. From Durban via George to Capetown and then up to Bulawayo onto Broken Hill in Zambia. i was then ten We spent 7 days mostly on the trains

The pairing of GMAM and GL garratt locomotive is like taking 2 19D's and class14 'mountain' making 4 of them to the train that would have been easy for either GMAM or GL to handle. That pairing of the 2 garratt locos which were amongst the most powerful in SAR history was extravagant.(2023.11.20-11:35-soacalled South Africa)

Barry - fantastic to come across this today by sheer chance. I was there for a day in May 2005 (similiar glorious sunshine) and this brought back the whole experience - in a way photos just don't. Like a time machine! I travelled to Lamastre and back behind Nr 104 (0440) and saw Nr 403 in action too.

Whatever and whichever advanced technology we have done nowadays though, we will never compete with old technology.

Steam engines are the FORERUNNERS of the latest modern rail industry in the world.

Hi Norman, many thanks for your kind comments. It was a great trip with wonderful opportunities for filming which are just not possible on a busy railway. The scenery, food and the company on the train made this a most memorable trip and I am so pleased I got there while such a trip was still possible.

I rode a passenger tarin in 1981 from Cape town to Praetoria. On one leg a condenser Class 25 pulled us into Kimberly. Great memorable trip. Service was top notch and train was very clean.

Very nice, I've been on this line in 1994. Sadly the line has been closed now for quite some years after a landslide just beyond the Kaaimans bridge and tunnel blocked the line. It's a relatively short stretch but apparently difficult and expensive to repair as the bank is very steep and the N2 main road above it.

The tender behind the 25NC is in fact a rebuilt Condensing tender. Not all the SAR Garrats were built at Gorton, some in Glasgow & some by Henschel at Kassel

The first railway line was laid d in Southern Rhodesia in 1897, running from the Union of South Africa, through Bechuanaland and on to Bulawayo. In the early 1980’s there were about 118 running steam engines in Zimbabwe. Coal was an abundant resource. A few of the engines remain in operational order. Many could be overhauled and re-fired once again…including mini-steam trains at amusement parks (former Round Table). I grew up in the Eastern Border and also lived in Braeside, Harare for a while. En-route to Umtali we used to see steam trains, and there were numerous ones operating from Bulawayo, in addition to one or two at Harare. So, walking along a railway track and collecting the large lumps of coal became a favourite game. They added great warmth to a fire or hearth. It is no surprise, therefore, that I published a book on Zimbabwean steam trains, entitled, “Sam Edward the Steam Train” by Dr. Ross Gordon Cooper, Lulu Press Ltd. This book in the making was worked on part-time for many years, as I gathered useful, genuine historical information to include therein. NRZ Railway Museum curator (Bulawayo), Mr. G. Some of these locomotives were built not too far from where I live in England. Gorton Works, where all the Beyer Peacock locomotives were built, is only an hour drive from where I live.
