African Violets - Zippering, a.k.a. Fasciation
Hi. I just put 6 of my violets on wick watering. I had previously repotted them so did not want to do that again. I used a large needle to thread the wick up into the soil. My questions are how will I know if it is working? Should the soil always appear wet/moist? Will I know it’s working because the water in the jar is disappearing? Thanks!
@@karenvknight6516 It should work, as long as the wick is presoaked, the potting mix contains at least 50% coarse perlite, and the plants have well developed root system, strong enough to grow on wick watering. I would water it sparingly from the top, after you thread the wick, to get the capillary action going. Yes, you’ll know it’s working when the potting mix remains moist and the water level goes down in the reservoir over time. Happy growing!
@ thanks for your wonderful videos!
Thank you for sharing this beauty
I always wondered what “Sport” meant, so now I understand why mine are two different colors.
I've had that same experience with starter plants not blooming with the fantasy, and Streaks as parent.even after 2or 3 cycles. Thanks for sharing your experience. .It is very disappointing .
@@SS11660 We’ll see how this one goes - will make sure to grow if not all, at least a few more propagations to see which one has best fantasy. Sometimes, change in growing conditions can change the blooms too, e.g. the intensity of color pigment in the blooms, etc. I will need a lot of patience, lol!
Very helpful!
You know your stuff about your violets , enjoy your videos, thank you, Oly. Wa.
Hi, I always love looking at your violets, thank you for sharing their beauty with us. I always look forward to the new mini and semi videos. Do you disbud your plants at all? They always have a nice head of blooms.
@@verajfgcs Thank you, glad they are enjoyable! Yes, I disbud them periodically, and when I repot them twice a year. Because of the collection size, there is always something blooming!
Yet another awesome plant! Love ❤️ 😍 that vibrant PURPLE! S.
Me too!! Definitely quite a looker!
And those gorgeous leaves!!! Stunning! I'm very envious of all of your "babies" 😂
So lovely.

Beautiful! 🤩
You grow the most beautiful plants , great videos too.

I love African violets I love watching you are very good with plants
@@DarleneMiller-z2j Thank you!🌸
I got a mini over the weekend noid but beautiful flower
Do u water them until the water comes through the bottom
@@DarleneMiller-z2j For standard varieties that are top watered - I normally give them about 8 oz water with every watering. Sometimes I see a bit of water coming through the bottom, sometimes not. Much easier with wick-watered, there I simply re-fill the reservoirs.
Love this one!❤
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have been doing it wrong! Thank you for teaching me.
@@sharonlane5647 Appreciate your feedback! Happy growing!
Love, love, love! It's soooo perfect, and my favorite color purple! 😊❤
So beautiful 🩷
Very nice! I have this one but it is so tiny! No blooms yet
@@dianetaylor1699 Mine took some time to start blooming, too. I grew it from a freebie leaf received from the hybridizer - so grateful to have it now that I see it bloom!🌸
@grayturtleviolets thanks for giving me hope!
What symmetry you got on this one! ❤
Beautiful 😊
Gorgeous! I have one exactly like this one and makes me wonder if its the same. How can it be so the same looks. All your violets are so especial and I admire you for your dedication. I will always blame you for I now having over 60 violets ..LOL...Following your teachings have served so well. I did not know it was possible to have them flower all the time . I thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Not only are the flowers beautiful but so are the leaves.

Wonderful video, everything explained so clearly, it is encouraging…thank you! 🤗🪴
Also like your glass jars are they on amazon?
@@nanci357 if I remember correctly, the one I used in this video was from a dollar store a few years ago.
Looks like youve changed alot of things, is this mix more simple and do you like these lights better than barrina, also someone said that jacks was burning there roots, are you still using Dynamo grow? What do roots look like when there burnt? Thanks
@@nanci357 I did simplify the potting mix, everything else is pretty much the same as before. I showed these lights in All My Lights video: ruclips.net/video/8evlmRe58Fc/видео.htmlsi=VQadIY761ZJO-rLF, and I still use them all. I switch fertilizers occasionally and have used both Dyna-Gro Grow 7-9-5 and Jack’s Classic, no burnt roots.
As usual a winner ! Can't wait to see it bigger. Thanks so much for teaching us once again the repotting of these beauties.💚💚💚
3:31 Brilliant idea to make a paper support collar to hold the propagation.
This is so helpful..I have been wondering how it was doing and if you had it domed. I think I can do now. Thanks!!
Very helpful, always learn something from you. Thanks.
Thanks! Have you ever done tissue culturing with AFRICAN VIOLETS?
I haven't tried it. Sounds interesting!

Love this variety
Oh my goodness - so pretty!!! What size mason jars do you use beneath for the wicking?
@@chantelljunk8342 Thanks! Ball Glass Mason Jar with Lid, 8oz, from Walmart.
Hi Gray Turtle- I wanted to be in touch about the potting media you use. I watched a video that you had here and then messaged you about it on Ebay and you told me that you did not use that same mix anymore but I cannot find that message. I have purchased quite a few violets from you the past few months and know that I will need to do some repotting in the Spring and want to keep the plants growing in the same media since your violets are so very happy !!! Which makes me happy! Thanks for your help- Julie from Maine
