Wheeltop EDS TX Battery Replacement and Stress Test
Wheeltop EDS TX Battery Replacement and Stress Test
Hey all, My brother and I were curious about how tough it really is to swap out a Wheeltop EDS TX battery, and whether it would maintain its water intrusion resistance after the fact. Though Wheeltop states that the battery unit is replaceable, we have yet to see anyone report on how easy or difficult it is to complete.
Can the wheeltop system survive a 3000psi power washer? Check out the video to find out!

im confused i see the model with a removable battery?
This system has a fixed battery that requires tools to remove. This video is to demonstrate how easy it is to "replace" the battery in the event of a failure.
@ oh strange the wheel tops I see have removable rechargeable batteries
@@big_bird8597 the original Wheeltop systems had removable batteries I believe, but I think there were legal reasons for them switching to this design. *cough cough SRAM cough cough*
What about the front D???? Do you think its the same???
Hmmm... That's a great question. 👀
I can confirm that the front battery does indeed install and remove as easily as on the RD
😲
Thumbs up for RUclips Zwift rides!
woohoo!
Reminds me of when TopGear tried to destroy a Toyota Hilux
I wanted to also drop it out a car window at 70 and launch it across a parking lot but pookie said no lol
As I'm sure you know, the system was originally designed with a removable battery, but, because of that whole SRAM thing, WT revised it. I always suspected that revision was just cosmetic with a few 'Retaining Screws', to get past the whole issue. I too had a play around with removing it, because I suspected it was as you found. But as we see in your removal, you needed to give it a bit of a shove in order for the battery to let go of the derailleur body. As I was playing with a perfectly good derailleur, I didn't want to force it. Thanks for taking the time to both make this video, and also share it. Jon 👍
Ya I was also unwilling to try this on a new good derailure lol. I was also very glad to see they just used screws to retain the swappable design battery to get around that SRAM thing. In an email they told me they do not currently offer a replacement but I suspect they will in the future. Also in that email they said they do not want the end user to swap batteries preferring you to send it to them for this service. There concern was the weather seal and proper install. I can see the reasoning and to some extent agree but that may be against the new right to repair and warranty laws in the USA. Either way that's a problem in the future and I am just glad it's an easy swap.
@@hill160881 I've considered emailing the marketing team that deals with the promotion for WheelTop (Global One Click), to see if they'd be interested in me doing an 'Official' video for them showing how you replace it. Suspect it'll be declined though. As you say, they're not keen on End Users doing it.
Also, How about the front Derailleur? Can you do a video showing that battery removal etc?
We will try that soon.
Mine had water sip into one of the ic’s in the motor. Wheeltop said it’s a known issue and replaced it with a NEW design. I don’t know what they did as it looked the same (probably the seal). But what I did is to smear the crevices with black engine silicone sealant just to make sure. And I did that to my shifter and RD as well.
I am glad to hear they replaced it. I think I may remove the battery and install sealant around the seam.
@@hill160881 that would be the best approach. I was too lazy to do that. Lol. Still working though. It’s been months.
Thanks for the video. So what are we thinking about a battery replacement? Does wheeltop expect to be making one? If so, is there a way to replace it on a ride without using the screws? Has anyone come up with a clamp, pins etc?
They have not offered a replacement yet. But knowing it’s replaceable without any special tools or sealants is good. I am sure at some point if it becomes an issue they will offer them. No there is no way to swap it without the screws.
really good video
Be interesting to know why it has 4 pins, not 3 like a Standard LiPo, wondering if some of the units "brains" are in the battery box.
It's only three but still a possibility. I suspect they either have as you say some sort of communication with the battery pack or if they used this 3 pronged lead because that lead was cheap and available.
@@hill160881 I must have paused the vid when there was some motion blur or something, you are right it is only 3. Likely just a battery with either a temp sensor wire or (more likely if it's 7.4v) a centre tap between 2 cells for charging/balancing. If that is the case, it might be possible, once spares are available, to make at least the rear road/trail side "swappable" with something as simple as thumb screws, or (and I know I'm getting ahead of myself with this one) 3d print an adapter that bolts to the mech to take an AXS battery.
@@Bikey_McBeardface It is two cell battery - voltage is between 8.4V (100%) and 6.6V (0%) - at least this is what percentage app will display to you.
Pookie it’s just so American having to start something that’s sounds like a motor to use a pressure washer ❤
You just can't get a powerful electric pressure washer. At a certain point you need an engine to get more usable pressure. I agree its very American to need an engine to wash our stuff lol.
haha right?! MORE POWAAA
Aside from a Russian channel showing it taken apart I don't think anyone has taken it apart on camera yet..
Did they crack open the battery box itself? I'm curious to why 4 pins not 3 like SRAM/Standard LiPo.
@@Bikey_McBeardface its 3 pin not 4
@hill160881 Yeah, I think it was just bad luck where I paused the vid it looked like 4, but on second viewing I can see it's only 3, thanks.
a 28 speed?
yep! It's a super cool design. Not for everyone, but still.
sweet!
sweet!
Roadies: (add another gear to the cassette) "WOW! This changes EVERYTHING!" Me: 🤦♂️
Maybe we should all go back to singles, maybe a horse? Hell why not just walk...
This is what a response from a bicycle seller looks like I will receive spare 14 speed sprocket and chain with the bike Evelyn Peng 2024-11-27 11:21 TT-X43 carbon wheels full bike is 969usd, paint is 80usd, 14 speed sprockets and an associated chain is 80usd
That's great you got a fast response as well
TanTan Responded fast and replacement cassettes are $50 and Chains are $30 as well with $30 shipping. No quick master links available atm. Edit they call the master link a magic buckle. They are $10 each.
Update: They DO have master links available. We just had a translation mixup as they call them "magic buckles". What a cool name!
what hub does this uses?
Road hub, maybe a XDR since it's a 10T
This setup uses a custom driver with the same keying as HG. You can technically slide this 14s onto any HG, but it wont actually function as the cassette will overlap the edge of the axel shaft. They managed this by decreasing the spoke flange distance and driver length to push the cassette closer to the center of the wheel.
The chain is 0.2mm narrower than a 12 speed
I've been looking at this bike for 3 weeks..... in a completely white version I'm going to order the bike today...I'm 182 cm tall...would ask for an opinion on what size frame should I buy
Man you are tall. We are 168cm to 170cm and the 52 fits nice. I have no idea on the step up in sizes and how they fit taller riders. I used the geometry from a bike that I know fit me to match up reach.
@@hill160881 Guys thank you made it easier for me to decide for this bike..... They - TANTAN recommended me a 54 frame size......For taller riders, however, they recommend a TT-X 42 frame with 14 speed group
What is the size of this bike ...52?
Yes 52
@@hill160881 how tall is the owner ?
Showing my age a bit here, but this feel a lot like when they started going above 7 speed with freewheels back in the 90's and we would snap an axle a week.
Interesting point, and I'll definitely keep everyone posted on the durability of the hub. I have no affiliation with the company, so if it's shite, I'll say it haha. Due to what I have seen so far with my breakdown of the wheel, I am hopeful in its durability. 142mm through axels are pretty beefy, and I don't anticipate that failing. The cassette has been moved in to accommodate the extra cog. They achieved this by decreasing the flange distance between the spokes. This makes the real concern more about the lateral stability of the rim over hub strength. Stay tuned for updates!
What about Plan B ?? If you don't get 14 gears sprocket Can you use 12 gears sprocket and 12 s chain and re-program the electronic rear derailleur to 12 gears
Yes but you would need a different hub as well.
That's the biggest problem with this setup at the moment. The hub is custom for the 14s cassette. You Could swap out hub/wheel to a 12s if you have one, then yes, you could reprogram it to 12s. It's an awesome bike, especially for someone who enjoys some unique/quirky engineering, but until more parts become available for this platform, my recommendation leans more towards the 12s due to practicality. The parts are replaceable through Tantan though, so repairs/replacements are possible.
Tantan responded and the chain and cassette are $50 each plus $30 shipping. So parts are available
Where do you even get a 14spd cassette to replace it?
Currently only from tantan.
Great question, and yes. You have to source them through Tantan. If anyone else is looking to get one of their bikes, I am currently leaning my recommendations towards their 12s models until more part options become available. That being said, I still love the 14s
Was a beautiful thing!
👀
I know! its actually a thing 🤯
nice project you've got here, boyz.... you've got yourselves a subscriber here! For me, the point of a 14-speed cassette is to have an 1x transmission. Can that transmission be configured like that? I mean... with a 40T front chainring and an 11-46 cassette I could do almost everything. But, is there such a cassette? Will there be, in the close future? I'd love to build such a project with under 8kg - it's realistic. Waiting for further reports on this configuration of yours 2x14... but maybe you test the possibility of an 1x config (with a narrow-wide chainring, mandatory!).
They, wheeltop, do make a gravel system that is 1x. It also is 14s compatible and accommodates up to 51 teeth.
yeap, that's a good ideea. Again, the question is where to find cassettes.
I 100% agree. With the added functionality of 13 and 14 speed rears, it really does make a 1x setup an even better option. I am in contact with Tantan about this build and will ask them about gearing options for their x43s. Currently Wheeltops road drivetrain only goes up to 36t rear, but they just released their gravel groupset, so a 10/11-46 rear may be a possibility in the near future.
@@scherzo0olook up ztto cassettes. They are supposed to be shimano hg compatible. They offer an 11/50 and 11/52.
DON'T CLAMP A CARBON BIKE ON THE TOPTUBE
you can see its unclamped. just perfectly balanced on the rack
yes, it is not clamped, just resting in the stand.
lol we knew we would get crap for that lol.
@@mattaltea I can see that, but don't even make it seem like it is going to be clamped, just run the clamp vertical and hold the seatpost. In fact, why is that clamp even horizontal to begin with?
@@Shadowboost It was horizontal because not all our bikes are carbon. We had a Ti bike clamped into the stand right before the video was filmed. There is nothing wrong with resting your bike/hanging it by the top tube. There are bike wall stands that use this approach to great success.
Excellent review! I'm really looking forward to seeing the bike in its finished state. Looks like an awesome value build. Ride on ! 😂🔥
Thanks! Yeah, it's a super interesting bike. We are in the process of tearing it down and have found some interesting things out about how Tantan made the 14 speed work. I appreciate you hanging out for the live unboxing as well!
14 gears? Why
You must live in a relatively flat area? Around me, it is impossible to get in a ride without adding in a decent climb, so the more gears, the better. Also, it allows for a more linear progression. less big jumps in cadence between gears!
Just guessing, , , single chain ring ?🤔
@@Maggie_n_Mitch23 it's 2x up front believe it or not. I put out an initial review vid on my channel if you want to see the bike from some better angles.
I can imagine what the difference is. The marginal difference between 11 and 12 and now 14.
Nice, I know 13 speed has been out for a few years via rotor, S-Ride and ZTTO 14 speed on HG hub like S-Ride/ZTTO or is it on an XD or Microspline?
I'd be happy with a 1x14 gravel set up. 👍🏼😎
Wheeltop has a gravel system that does 14 speed and I believe goes to 51 tooth rear cog
+1 to Hills comment. Wheeltop makes a wireless gravel groupset now so we might see something like that soon... 👀
Great Video! Love the camera angles with that 360 cam!......oh and....first! Get rekt nerds!
the 360 is so cool!
is there a 13 speed chain?
@@rdsim8589 it works with a standard 12 speed chain
Zwift actually did something nice!
I know it's nothing special in the big scheme of gaming, but that live cutscene was good fun.
@THEEPookiebutt no phased update was another highlight
How did you fit the 13 speed cassette to a normal HG freehub? In theory the rotor 13 speed cassette requires to use the rotor hub that as a slightly longer freehub
Yeah, it's crazy, but the Rotor cassette fits right on the HG driver without any modification. It may be a different story for another frame set, but according to Rotors website, it fits on a standard HG hub and is compatible with 12 speed chains.
I did use a 2.5 mm shim between the frame and wheel hub on the drive side to get chain clearance from the frame.
Very interesting... and the first I've heard of these components. After playing with an online gear calculator, I'm pretty sure I could finally go to a 1x on my road bike with a 13 speed cassette and not miss the 2x.
Awesome! I honestly feel that's the ultimate end goal with gearing. I would love to axe the front derailleur while also not compromising too much on the steps between gears. What do you think about the new Classified system? I hope we see more systems like this in the future, but with less of a proprietary nature and a lower price point. Basically, I want my cake and to eat it as well! lol
Agreed, although chainline being more comprised at the extremes and utilising small 9 or 10 tooth cogs in the cassette will count against it for faster riders.
There's already a 2x14 road bike using the same groupset sold by SERAPH It's called the TT-X43. Info is a little scant, but it supposedly uses a shortened XDR driver, and a special 14 speed chain. The cassette isn't a crazy dinner plate, either, it's 10-36, Which although interesting kind of makes it pointless in my opinion almost everyone I know (myself included) on 12's uses it like 11s plus a "bailout gear" anyway. It's also crazy cheap £900/$1200 full carbon plus shipping from China so it either doesn't work very well or they are just testing the waters, if no one bites they won't bother producing any spares.
@@Bikey_McBeardface yeah, my brother and I have found a couple 14s bike out there, but so far, I can’t find anything about them being spotted in the wild. Only at bike shows. We currently have a 2x14s on order from a company called Tantan out of China and plan to do a review and test ride video in the near future (shipping time dependent).
@@THEEPookiebutt That's the one, I did wonder what the "TT" was as all about, it being a road bike and all.
Also jersey is sexy.
Best of luck in Vegas my dude!
@@JDirom thanks JD! We managed to get it done!
@@THEEPookiebutt awesome my dude! Happy to hear that!
2x10 is more than sufficient
I do understand the concept of it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Going to 13 cogs in the rear does not solve any problem for the average rider. I however do use them all where I live with the hills and mountains. We had 2 speed autos in the 50s then 3 speed then 4 now 10. I can’t see a benefit to going back to a 2, 3, 4 speed when the 10s trans just skips gears when needed. That what I do on this bike. Skip when I can and enjoy the options.
for most, I agree, but it's fun to put together projects like this that may have only been done by a few people around the world. Its more to speculate on the future moves of the bicycle industry and experiment with the possibilities that are currently out there and available to us.
How many people actually use all of the cogs on their 11+ speed cassettes? I’m still riding an 11 speed with an 11-25 array of cogs, and I almost never use the 25. What’s the point of going to 12 or 13 cogs if those cogs are over 25 teeth?
You are not wrong. Most of my shifting is double tapping skipping a gear. I don’t mind the extra shifting because it’s a button. As to the gearing. We have really bad grades. Up to 14% I use the 36t cog just getting out of my neighborhood on the 10% grade getting to the main road. Just going on a basic 10 mile ride here and you climb 1000 feet. That’s an easy day. When I lived in Tulsa I would not need anything but a 10/28. The thing is if you don’t need it you won’t see a point. I love innovation and this is great.
agree with @hill160881. There are many people who will find this stupid, but around where we live, elevation gain during a ride is a guarantee. This is purly a fun project to try out things that maybe haven't been done before. It's also fun to speculate on where the industry will be going in the future.
Tell me you live in flat land without telling me you live in flat land. I've got hills where the low 34x32 gear still puts me over 300W just to get up it.
I use all my gears on my 12-34 12s 🤷🏻. One more would be nice and I could add a 36 and maybe a bigger chainset for more efficiency
you don't need any gears at all then. you think we are all joking with 51 cassettes ?
Ooh, soon we will be up to 27 gears…just like we were 20 years ago with 3x9s 😂
we have almost reached peak 2000s tech! 😂
This is the initial set up procedure. After pairing you start on page 16 and learn the parts. Like the J adjustment😉. FD install is on pg 37 and 43. It’s simple. RD install and initial alignment is on pg 45. Inter the app and assign the cassette you are using. Now enter initial calibration. Remember that J screw adjustment? How many started there first? Set your J screw per instructions and fine tune in the app. Now exit initial calibration and set the limit screw D minimum. Now shift into the largest cog. Now you adjust the B screw for 8mm clearance from the largest cog. Now set limit screw E maximum. (You may need to enter the app and fine tune this gear now) Now you fine tune the rest of the cassette in the app. It’s not that hard but knowing this process is key.
I find it kind of funny that, so many are compiling about the "bad" instructions being hard to follow. The fact is they aren't "bad" it's just that if you speak a major European language you've been spoiled by manuals that don't have to share with other languages. As my best friend in the world (who happens to be Japanese) would say, "Tough s**t round eye" 🤣
@@Bikey_McBeardfaceno people are not reading the directions and treating this like a mechanical unit and installing it. Then when things don’t work they are complaining that the instructions are bad, because they did not use them. That’s what I did 😂
@@hill160881 It was the same with early SRAM Hyro-R brakes, so many people thought SRAM brakes were crap compared to Shimano for so long, and blamed the use of DOT fluid. None of them read the manual that shows you had to strap the leaver down to lock it off from the rest of the system, and they got working spongy brakes with about 70% power.
Yeah it IS fairly straight forward. The limit screws seem pointless though. If you set the *G* screw for the small cog then the rest should be done with presets for the number of cogs, the make of cassette, and the freehub type maybe. Same on the front derailleur... simple presets for chainline and spacing (if that's actually ever an issue?) And yeah, have an advanced mode where you can go outside the recommended options if needs be? Seems to me they just made it a bit over complicated for no reason. Brilliant bit of kit though. Hopefully it'll be properly supported with sensible software updates over the next few months because the hardware deserves it.
@@Bikey_McBeardfaceGreat point... though who the heck really knows what a 'joystick' will be in 10 or 20 years time!!
Thanks for sharing but it's not the first, TanTan has been selling a 2x13 and 2x14 bikes for some time now on aliexpress.
Would you have a link? I did several searches before I built the bike and could not find anything. Edit ok I found them. Very interesting. Ya, so apparently in July they started offering the eds system with 14s option on the x43. I don’t know if they have delivered any as yet. I would bet you could ask for this option on the other bikes they offer though. I cant find a video of it in operation on the road but I bet it won’t be long. Also I cant find the cassette/chain or what hub they are using. I will keep looking. Thanks for the info but until the parts are available and it’s a delivered product it’s not really a thing.
I want to point out any shifting issues may just be me not being a bike mechanic. I am a good general mechanic. I however have no idea if I have it set up properly. I did follow the directions but…
Yeah I find this cool. Bee on the fence between that group and ltwoo. The rotor cassette what free hub and chain did you use?
Shimano hg hub and 12 speed chain.
what @hill160881 said!
My bike still at 7 speed,,, I will upgrade once 15+ speed is available.
haha I know right. Cool thing is that the Wheeltop derailleurs will work with a 7 speed. so could always go that route in the mean time.
so wtf you are doing here with your beater
Dude! Please tell me where you acquired the titanium fork. I've been looking for one since I had my titanium frame made for me in 2021. I have Dura-Ace Di2 11 speed currently but when that group needs replaced I am going with the Wheeltop group.
The fork is made by the company Comeplay out of China. It only supports up to a 32c, maaaaybe a 35c tire (currently waiting on a pair of 35 contis to arrive to test this). This fork took significant modifications due to quality control issues, but it was totally worth it. A link to the product can be found in the about section of this video. WARNING: the fork requires a constant diameter headset, or modified 1 1/2 taper crown race. Not 1 1/2 taper. It does not come with axel or axel insert so make sure to request these items when you make the order. Hope that helps!
I can confirm it fits 35c tires.
