How to Get Your Company to File Your Patent
After learning the basics of Python and developing two machine learning algorithms for his team at Wells Fargo, Zach discovered that his company would provide the resources he needed to file patent applications for both inventions. A few years after filing, both patents were issued by the US Patent and Trademark Office. You can find them online here:

Because Zach developed these algorithms and filed their patent applications using Wells Fargo resources, Wells Fargo owns these patents. Still, Zach can list two patents on his resume, and that has been useful in his career....

Python is the Language-Like Interface of an Abstract Machine
Просмотров 397Месяц назад
In this video, Zach begins by asking, “What is a machine?” and then walks through explanations of machine interfaces, layers of abstraction, and the language-like quality of programming languages. Finally, at the end of the video, Zach addresses the difference between two major parts of the official Python documentation (the Language Reference and Library Reference). In summary: A machine is a ...
Abstraction in Computing Explained
Просмотров 5372 месяца назад
Computer hardware offers massive potential but its also incredibly complex. In computing the way that we deal with that complexity is through abstraction. Abstraction makes it easier for developers to produce useful applications and its important as a new student of programming to understand this concept but it can be difficult to wrap your head around it. This video provides some illustrations...

    Very nice video! I would just add that the cost of some abstractions are not equal, but besides that it is a very good analogy. Loved it.

      Hey, Adrian. Thanks for the comment. I’m curious - what exactly do you have in mind? Are you thinking about varying sacrifices of low-level control, or something else?

    I really appreciated the thoughts on abstraction, distinction. The infinite possibility of language in conveying meaning with a varying level of possibility given the vocabulary available was another take-away. But perhaps the most important concept for me was understanding how important it is to choose the appropriate level of abstraction. As someone who is autistic, I tend to communicate in a less abstract way which many find difficult because it requires parsing more information and a larger vocabulary. Finally, I believe that we are approaching the leverage of AI and machine learning when writing instructions for machines (coding) in the least efficient way. We are using languages designed for humans not AI. The next step will be to create languages with varying levels of abstraction that are easily manipulated and constructed by machine learning models allowing for a very high level of abstraction for even the most complicated of tasks. Bringing an almost PowerPoint level of abstraction to the process of writing good software.

    Why has this not been viewed more times? I absolutely loved this discussion. I am relatively new to writing software and these are exactly the kinds of fundamental concepts that build a good framework of how to think about code and the machines that it controls. Thank you!

    As a python dev I dunno... Maybe learning Javascript would have been a better starter - at least then you can first create websites with backend. Though you're forced to learn decently massive frameworks such as REACt, vue or angular. Python rules the back end though. But you could solve that with JS.

    The short print example shows nothing about the language. I use Python and there are a lot of great things about it when it comes to syntax, the short Hello World is not one of them. By the way, an adequate example of what you showed in Python is: def main(): print("Hello World!") if ___name___ == "__main__": main()

      @Py_Fi 3 месяца назад

      The example shown at the 12 second mark compares how to calculate a simple calculation in Python, Java, and C. By comparison, you can see that Python is a simpler language. Thank you for sharing.

    • @michaczerw7510
      @michaczerw7510 3 месяца назад

      @@Py_Fi Yes, it's a modified version of hello world - the calculation itself is the same in each of these languages and they take up the same amount of space. Replace "2 + 2" with "hello world" and the result will be the same. Use jupyter and you will be able to skip "print" - it will be even shorter. If you want to show the economy of python, show comprehension or lambda, not that python can be executed from the terminal as a script. If it's all about this, replace Python with JS and it will look practically the same, but you probably won't recommend JS to beginners to learn programming.
