Occasionally I fly for a Part 91 gig out of Las Vegas to Mexico. I decided to make a VLOG for you guys, so people can get a better idea of what it's really like to fly down there. I wish I had something like this before my first international flight. Just before landing at San Felipe, my inside camera died, sorry! Next time I make the trip I'll try to include more of what happens on the ground ...

    That's exactly what it's like in the cockpit side of one of these great planes. Very reliable birds. I wrenched on them back in the day, they're great planes. Love 'em. A 19000C freight hauler flys over me almost every evening. I can still it's a Pratt & Whitney PT6 by the sound. I look up & say 'Hi girl ' with big smile. Loved those planes.

    No internet access in Mexico is INCORRECT. You CAN do Eapis while in Mexico. I live in Mexico 6-8 months a year. Been flying there for 50 + years. Internet in the little fishing village where we live is better than where we live in US. Beware GPS data base in Mexico. Have seen both Garmin and Jepp misplace airports or show ones that never got built. WAC charts do NOT cover all of Mexico. Neither do Sectionals. ONCs do. ONCs are semi useless, unless you annotate them yourself. Somebody puts out WAC scale charts, but they are not from US gov., and are as impoverished of information as ONCs. Jepp IFR very expensive, 346 usd, but has all you need to know about big airports and airspace system. There are all sorts of airports where neither Jepp nor anybody else gives you any reliable info. Many of the most interesting of them are unimproved. PA-18 better than PA-28, if you have to fly a Piper. For info before you depart US, I think AOPA better than Baja Bush, nicer, more efficient, cheaper. Helps a lot if your Spanish is good enough to talk to the controllers, plus understand what the other pilots are saying. Huge differences in ability to speak and understand gringo among various controllers. Myself, would not fly IFR in Mexico if I could not talk to the controllers in their own language. Seen some near disasters caused by stress of weather + language misunderstandings. When flying over the Sierra on nice mornings it's fun to listen on 122.8, hear what the squadrons of bush pilots are doing. You do NOT file a flight plan for flight you've just flown. You fill out an arrival form. Do be sure you keep your last flight plan. Army and Marines stationed at almost all boonie strips will want to see it. Why does this guy need an ATIS for an airport with a tower in and unlimited vis and no other traffic? PS: Foreflight won't help you in the least finding and landing at San Juan Peyotan, Nayarit. And, when touring Chiapas, you'll do better looking out the window than trying to get useful sat weather.

    Just guessing, without having researched this airport or ever flown in Mexico, that the tower here really is AFIS (Aerodrome Flight Information Service) doing just that, providing service but does not issue clearances.

    A couple of years ago I went for a flight out of Tobias Bolaños Airport (MRPV) in San Jose, Costa Rica. The controllers in the San Jose area all spoke English, but with an odd quality that made me wonder if that was all the English they knew. Outside of the central valley all the radio chitchat was in Spanish and I was glad I had a local instructor with me.

    • @skyhawk_4526
      @skyhawk_4526 3 года назад

      Across the world, pilots who fly international and controllers who deal with international flights must all be able to communicate in English. But yes, for both pilots and controllers, that proficiency is often very limited to proper aviation phraseology and deviating from that can cause problems with understanding what a pilot or controller is trying to say. As a pilot, I have to admit that those deviations and problems often come from the pilots, not the controllers. The best way to deal with it is to be as simple and basic in those communications like you were initially trained to speak as a student pilot. Using slang and non-standard terms in a country where English is not the primary language will cause confusion and misinterpretations that can not only be frustrating, but dangerous. The last thing you want as a pilot or a controller is to misinterpret (or have the other misinterpret) an important instruction or request.

    I've been flying this airplane for 9 years. I'm about to do my 10th and final renewal and will move on to a much bigger bird. When my career is all said and done, the 1900 will be the one that stole my heart. What a fantastic machine. Great video.

      @johndonald3566 Same here, great plane. Had to go to Chicago or Minneapolis to do an A check or another maintenance task. We were on the taxiway behind a massive DC10. The DC10 throttled up to enter the runway & I thought ' with all the airflow over our wings, how are we NOT going airborne?!' Beech 1900s, great planes. Don't wrench on them any more, but in the short time I did - a lifetime of great memories 😊
