MacPherson Strut Removal and Replacment
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.4 года назад
Video on how to remove and replace a MacPherson strut assembly. The radio was on playing music and I don't need RUclips getting angry at me. Perform this auto maintenance at your own risk. There are some very dangerous hazards to watch out for but it is as simple as it looks. Good Luck.

My stick shift knob was going crazy while driving so I decided to investigate and fix the problem before it became serious. Watch me diagnose and replace an engine mount at the back of the engine on my front wheel drive car. Holy shit dude! Wind them compressors down slower. Do them opposite each until they're as even as possible and you've got control of the MOFO. Personally I'd have three of them on there. That's a fukkoff big spider waiting to launch at your face! You're a long time dead and your car will be getting some bodywork action!

And this whole time I thought I was doing it the safe way. My uncle always did them by wrapping coat hanger wire around them then raising the car. No joke. May he RIP.

@@TheMechanicalManiac Feck Blud...you're jesting right? Coat hanger wire! Would just contribute shrapnel if called on to arrest its flight towards your lip! Dude. Keep it all Straight A. 😉

Just did this to my daughter's 09 Aveo5 Automatic. Same torque mount, but torque specs are 59 ft. pounds to engine, 35 ft pounds to frame

The choke is in choking position when the engine is not running then when running the air flow opens the choke.

as a safer alternative for those DIYers, you can also jack up the wheel hub slightly by placing it under the brake rotor, and loosen the strut nut from your hood just slightly. Then you can proceed to disconnect the rest of the wires/cables attached to the strut. Once that's done, you can go back to your hood and completely remove the nut (while car jack still jacking up the strut). The car jack will act as a spring compressor in this instance. Once the top strut nut is removed, slowly lower the jack. Much safer than playing with spring compressor tool.

To DIYers- This is a dangerous job if not done correctly. Not all struts poke through into the engine bay like this one does. Just because you removed the top nuts then raised your vehicle, it does not mean the spring tension was released. Some cars have a plate that bolts to the top of the strut housing and that will come out with spring at full tension. Always use some specialized tool to squeeze and hold springs while you're working with them.

@@TheMechanicalManiac good info, had no idea about the plate. Do you have a video that would illustrate this kind of setup? I've always thought strut sticks out at the top

Did your vehicle happen to vibrate when this motor mount was bad? I mean like vibrations inside while car was at a complete stop?

Sir. Do i need a jack stand for the engine?

    • @TheMechanicalManiac
      @TheMechanicalManiac 3 года назад

Not for the rear, stabilizing, engine mount. I didn't change the front two but in either case, left or right, you will need to support the engine when you remove the engine support. A jack stand, some wood blocks, all good things to use.

Nice video. You tightened the first two bolts before getting the third bolt in place. That is why you struggled with the third bolt. You should keep all bolts loose until all bolts are in place and started.

Unfortunately the Torque Strut Mount isn't carried by Oriely's or Autozone. I bought mine as a set with all the mounts since I was under there already but I really only needed the Torque Strut. I put the link to the one I bought in the description.

The problem of oxidation and dirt begins with ignorance of the maintenance that should be given to the vehicle, here in Mexico, the freemasonry controls everything, even the mechanics, who pass it scamming the population with their exorbitant charges and composures that do not work, break the hoppers, break or lose screws, do not know the torque meter, etc etc ... I had to realize and be responsible for the almost total maintenance of my vehicles, learn mechanics, tinsmith and electricity is important especially in a failed state like Mexico.

Really good video, very descriptive, but from what I can see this car looks very rust free. I was doing this same job in Toronto, Canada on a rusty 06 Aveo with about 150000 KMs and it's a much different situation. The 2 bolts which mount to the subframe have severely rotted into the subframe and where they sit through the metal part of the mount. Even after heating them up with a torch AND using a 400lb ft impact wrench I was only able to get 1 of the 2 bolts out, the other finally rounded. The old mount is still in the car while I wait for new mount-subframe bolts from the dealer and I take another shot at getting that rounded bolt out. Also, the bolt that goes through the front bushing/engine bracket was fairly rusted into the collar of the bushing, but after a soak in penetrating oil and a few good hits it made its way out. What should've been a very simple job turned out to be a complete disaster.

That's the nice part about living out of snow country, the cars last longer and bolts are less likely to be destroyed. That sounds like a complete PIA. I hope you can get that other one out otherwise it will be a PIA to drill out. Not sure what equipment you have but maybe after drilling you can tap or helicoil it. Or just drill all the way through and put nuts on the backside with a longer bolt?
