    I'd like to see a picture of that today, because dollars to donuts that tree's either dead because of all that chain-sawing of those massive roots so close to the tree killed it or caused it to tip over the first windstorm that came along or the roots have overtaken that barrier. He said they used 12" barrier. Leaving 2" above grade, which that wasn't 2", would leave only 10" below grade. With roots that massive and aggressive, in search of water the tree needs to survive, which all that chain-sawing of the present roots just deprived that tree of and so the tree, if it's to survive, will start aggressively regenerating roots in search of water, and with roots that massive, they will have no problem hitting that barrier and deflecting down and up. Some will crawl under it and some will crawl over it and they will essentially wrap around that barrier and crush it. And if the ones on the surface I kept in check, like the property owner or manager has landscapers eliminate the roots that deflect upward and try to crawl over that not even 2" of above-grade barrier, then the roots deflecting downward and then under will heave that barrier back up out of the ground as they go down then under and then start pushing up on it as they thicken and expand. Also, the roots were not just 6" down, like what was said, the basis for using only a 12" barrier. A 12" barrier is for a small tree, like a fruit tree. The root ball of that ficus tree, one as massive as that one is, goes several feet down, and where that root barrier's being put is right at the root ball or along its perimeter, the root ball being primarily stabilizing roots, not drinking roots. The drinking roots that extend outwardly from the root ball of a ficus travel along the surface and down 18" to 24". The minimum depth of root barrier needed for a ficus that size would be 36" and the time to have installed it would've been when it was young. As it was there, the only option to save the foundation of that adjacent building and the pavement was to remove the tree. Of course, if I'm wrong, which I'm not, I invite the makers of this video to prove it by uploading a video of that tree and pavement today, now six years later.

    Is that a trencher, though? Or is it just a chainsaw? It looks like a chainsaw, not a trencher. Unlike a chainsaw, a trencher is on wheels, so you're operating the working end of it from a distance and behind a pair of handles and controls, as opposed to the working end literally being at the end of your arms. Also, unlike a chainsaw, a trencher has hydraulics and built-in safeties to prevent injury to users if and when a user hits something it can't cut through, like buried objects such as a large rock, piece of concrete, or a metal pipe or even just the side of the pavement you're trying to edge next to. With a chainsaw, the kickback from hitting an object like that could easily result in one doing great bodily harm to oneself, even maiming oneself. Don't use a chainsaw. Use an actual trencher, which doesn't mean buying an expensive piece of equipment since they are available for rent at many hardware stores and home improvement stores.

    Dude, poor advice..cutting tree roots that close to the stem is a sure way to end up with tree failure. If hardscape is that important to you, save yourself some money/chemicals/wasted PHC efforts, remove the trees and get yourself a shade structure cause it's gonna get hot.

  • @tsmith8567
    @tsmith8567 2 года назад

    Not solving the tree situation; very obvious by the roots around the tree that you have a soil compaction and irrigation problem, you need to do an airspade and soil modification and while the airspade was there the roots at the sidewalk could have been revealed, pruned in a less invasive manner to prevent root rot, then use your product.
