Ghost Trains! Halloween 2024 at NYSME.
The New York Society of Model Engineers tried a new Halloween event this year called Ghost Train at NYSME. Usually the Society has a winter and a spring open house but we thought maybe a new one could attract a new audience. We decorated the layout for Halloween and created a new night time lighting for a section of the O scale layout.
The Ghost Train in the name refers to both the all white 1890’s era night-time express train of the New York and New England Railroad between New York City and Boston along with the many creepy folk tales of phantom ghost trains at night.
Hopefully NYSME can grow a new audience with this event.

    I have a question. How long were the Railroad Boxcars during the Civil War Era? I know about different Boxcar lengths from older 40ft Box cars, to 50ft, 60ft, and up to 86ft. All I inquire is to know the length of Civil War era Boxcars.

    • @este_Pandy_Projects
      @este_Pandy_Projects Месяц назад

      In the Civil War Era is that the sizes varied a lot and many were home built by the railroads instead of car builders. My understanding is that 40 foot car was a long one. 30 foot cars were closer to an average size but they could be even smaller. I recommend John Whites book "The American Railroad Freight Car" for plans and to get an idea of what they looked like.

    What scale is the boxcar? It looks big enough to be O scale. I just ordered a Silver Streak HO model kit and a McKean model kit. Can't wait to get them as I love to build kits. Both are for the Central of Georgia Railroad because I used to live in Jonesboro, GA, so I model the Central of Georgia. I've already build several Tichy Train Group kits, 2 ore cars, a 40' 50 ton flatcar and a 40' 50 ton wooden side gondola all with K-brakes. I model the early 1900's so most of my models have the required K-brakes and it's hard to find RTR rolling stock from that period unless you build them yourself. Thanks for posting building this boxcar. That looks like a fun kit to build. Cheers from an ex-Georgian in eastern TN

      Yes it is really wild to think of it like that. It was intended for WW1 but was not quite done in time.

    Very cool video. Immense possibilities for model railroad. I can easily imagine this as a model RR. Terrific shot Andy

      Thank you Thom. I have always loved the idea of Rail Marine Ops. It is pretty unusual to see it done today but in the past it was pretty common in New York Harbor. As you know the first attempts started in the ACW days. It would make a nicely contained layout.

    A very interesting building and really showcases how much of a focus on rail we have lost.

    • @este_Pandy_Projects

      Yes I agree it is wild how much rail traffic used to come directly into the city and how many industries were rail served now it seems to be the exception rather than the norm.

      Yes it is possible to walk around inside the train. There is nothing stopping you from changing seats or going to different cars. Honestly you could barely feel that you were moving so quickly.

      Absolutely. I agree and if it hasn’t already it should be. I can imagine people jumping balcony to balcony to escape the baddies. I has long been a favorite of mine ever since I first saw pictures of it. I have tried to get in to see it before and been turned away. This time it just worked and I’m so happy it did.

    Glad you had the chance to see the circus train! I can tell from the shot you took I was in the process of pulling all the animals and detail pieces off the layout in preparation for the train's departure from the yard. Thank you for the mention in your video.

    Was that a rat on the other platform when you were talking about the paint? At the 1:08 mark. Everyone just took it in stride.

      @este_Pandy_Projects 9 месяцев назад

      Wow. I think you are right. Nice catch. It looks like I even caught it with my pan shot. I guess as New Yorkers you get a bit jaded about them. I know I don’t flinch unless they are heading right towards my feet. Rats are just taken in stride as a part of nature that you just deal with in your own way. Another part of life to watch.
