A Brief Photography Guide to Milford Sound / Piopiotahi, Fiordland National Park
When writer Rudyard Kipling visited Milford Sound, New Zealand, in the 1890's he famously declared it the 'eighth wonder of the world'. Today, it's still very easy to understand how he reached that conclusion, for it remains one of the most magnificent natural places on the planet.
I've been fortunate to visit Milford Sound (btw, actually a fiord rather than a sound) multiple times over the years. No visit is ever the same; the ever-changing conditions and light always offer something new. For a landscape photographer, this place is heaven on earth!
I hope you enjoy this little photography guide. If there's something I haven't covered, feel free to ask a question in the comments :-)

Mt Titiroa: 4 days exploring the most surreal landscape I've ever visited
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.7 месяцев назад
Just 24 hours after getting back from my adventure to Mt Owen, a perfect weather window down south led me to jump in the car and drive the 8 hours from home to Manapouri. Ahead of me was 4 days of absolutely epic conditions in the Fiordland wilderness. Every time I'd previously been down this way, Mt Titiroa's shining white ridgeline - which from afar can be mistaken for snow but is actually gr...

After 20 years of dreaming about climbing Mt Owen, I finally made it to the summit at the very start of 2024. It was everything I'd imagined and so much more - what an absolutely stunning place! This vlog chronicles my solo adventure over 3 days. I won’t give anything more away; I hope the imagery and experience convinces you that this needs to be your next hiking trip! DJI Osmo Pocket 3: test footage from its first adventure!
Просмотров 43610 месяцев назад
Yesterday I visited Craigieburn Forest Park on my first proper outing with the DJI Osmo Pocket 3. Filming/photography in a forest on a blue sky day is always super challenging ... was great to put it to the test in some harsh lighting conditions. All sequences here were first attempts and no post-processing has been applied. With a bit more practice, and in better light, I'm very much looking f...
8 hours up Mt Oxford and a visit to Ryde Falls
Просмотров 57811 месяцев назад
This loop walk around the Oxford Forest Conservation Area takes in some great sights, including expansive views over the Canterbury Plains and Lees Valley. A side visit to the picturesque Ryde Falls is a must do. There are a number of points of entry; this particular trip starts at the end of Mountain Road, near Coopers Creek. Thanks for watching! #walk #hike #newzealand

Foggy Peak - a super fun day walk
Просмотров 431Год назад
Foggy Peak (1741m) is located in Korowai/Torlesse Tussocklands Park, New Zealand, and is most easily accessed from the top of Porters Pass on State Highway 73. It's a leg and lung buster to get up but should only take 90 minutes or so for those with reasonable fitness. Getting down is twice as fast, with lots of fun to be had running down the loose scree. Note that in winter this peak is usuall...

Some more ancient DV footage retrieved from the archives, this time from an overnight tramp in July 2004 to Cedar Flat Hut on the West Coast of the South Island. Ten minutes beyond the hut, in Wren Creek, are several natural hot springs which vary in temperature according to the river flow at the tim...
Peak climb, STORM incoming

Woolshed Hill is a superb half-day (~4 hours return) walk in Arthur's Pass National Park. A total elevation gain of 850m gives access to some fantastic panoramic views into the Waimakariri and Hawdon Valleys and across to the Southern Alps. The track is well marked to the bush line and after that dwindles to a route, but following the ridgeline is reasonably straightforward. I made this trip ju...

Trig M: A stunning and easy day walk near Porters Pass

Trig M is a great little walk located in Korowai/Torlesse Tussocklands Park near Porters Pass. There's some hill climbing involved so reasonable fitness is required, but otherwise the route is straight-forward and should be within the abilities of most people. This video was shot in late winter so there was some snow about, but for most of the year, the area is snow free. #hiking #adventure #ne...

On this 5-day hike we connected the Routeburn Track to the Caples Track to make an (almost) loop walk. By "almost" I mean the trailheads are 28 km apart (via road), but that's still far closer than the 315 km (via road) separation between the Routeburn Track trailheads. Plus the Caples makes a very worthwhile hike in its own right with some truly stunning scenery. We did this trip during the of...

Did the Dusky in march 1988. From Lake Manapouri to Dusky Sound, Dusky Sound to Lake Hauroko, Lake Hauroko back to Lake Manapouri, so doubletracked all the way. Took me 12 days, including a hutday at Dusky-sound for fishing, and a hutday at Lake Roe for climbing Mount Tamatea. Tough hike, but I was in great shape then, and was lucky with the weather. Great to see your vid on youtube, brings back great memories ! Wish I could still do hikes like this, but I'm 73 now, and live in Holland, where we don't have this kind of stuff !

There are no restrictions on camping around there, although given how popular it now is, maybe that day is coming! There are a number of places to pitch a tent but good sites soon get in short supply when it's busy.

Hello! Your video remind meI was lived and hiked here, the trail name "Dusky track", because at that moment I was a beginner, so I couldn't finished it. But after the fail experience, I start to hike a lots when I leave NZ and back to my country. Your video really beautiful, remind me the most beautiful memory in NZ. May I ask which track you did in this video? It is so beautiful.... I'm thinking go back Milford national park and hike again this year, so I need more information and research more homework, thanks a lot. Greeting from Pei Han.

One extra tip as someone who has been to Milford Sound on a few tours: you need to either drive yourself or spend the night at the port so you can be there to see the sunset. The tours take you in and out as quickly as possible because so much of the "day trip" is the long drive to get there. So despite living in that area for years, I never got to see sunset in Milford Sound! I also didn't have a youtube channel for scenic sunsets at the time, but this is a bucket list sunset location for sure! Thanks for the inspiration.

    • @DanielMurrayPhotography
      @DanielMurrayPhotography 6 месяцев назад

That's a great tip. It's definitely a long drive back out to Te Anau if you hang around for sunset. I've been fortunate enough to stay in Milford for most of my trips - in the busy season booking ahead is a necessity; winter visits are much easier in that respect.

A couple of us walked up the Spey River from the Wilmot Pass road one fine day - well, two, there and back. We weren't carrying much and it was quite dry - hadn't rained for at least two days! We got to the Upper Spey Hut and the track was pure mud from there on. Centre Pass had a bad rep, too. That, and the three-wire bridges were enough for me ... Mind you, this was in the 80s.

Thank you very much! Getting there is always the most challenging, especially on a trip like this where off-track navigation is required - once you know the way it tends to be faster and easier. On this trip I bumped into a few people in the first couple of hours of Manapouri, which is popular for day walking. After that I saw two sets of couples across the 4 days. 99% of the trip I was on my own.
