Spectacular NZ scenery! PhotoPills 2024 expedition - 13 days of photography bliss
In June 2024, at the start of the New Zealand winter, I had the honour of co-leading, along with the amazing Marco Grassi from PhotoPills, a group of 12 landscape photographers around some of the most iconic locations in the South Island.
PhotoPills had run many expeditions in other countries, but this was their very first adventure in New Zealand. It was an absolute privilege to assist with the NZ-side logistics, help with my knowledge of our ever changing weather and light conditions, and provide tutoring and guidance. This video provides a taste of our wonderful experiences. Bring on 2025 with all-new adventures awaiting!

A Brief Photography Guide to Milford Sound / Piopiotahi, Fiordland National Park
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.8 месяцев назад
When writer Rudyard Kipling visited Milford Sound, New Zealand, in the 1890's he famously declared it the 'eighth wonder of the world'. Today, it's still very easy to understand how he reached that conclusion, for it remains one of the most magnificent natural places on the planet. I've been fortunate to visit Milford Sound (btw, actually a fiord rather than a sound) multiple times over the yea...
Mt Titiroa: 4 days exploring the most surreal landscape I've ever visited
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Just 24 hours after getting back from my adventure to Mt Owen, a perfect weather window down south led me to jump in the car and drive the 8 hours from home to Manapouri. Ahead of me was 4 days of absolutely epic conditions in the Fiordland wilderness. Every time I'd previously been down this way, Mt Titiroa's shining white ridgeline - which from afar can be mistaken for snow but is actually gr...
Mt Owen, New Zealand: 3-day solo hiking adventure through The Lord of the Rings country

After 20 years of dreaming about climbing Mt Owen, I finally made it to the summit at the very start of 2024. It was everything I'd imagined and so much more - what an absolutely stunning place! This vlog chronicles my solo adventure over 3 days. I won’t give anything more away; I hope the imagery and experience convinces you that this needs to be your next hiking trip! DJI Osmo Pocket 3: test footage from its first adventure!
Просмотров 452Год назад
Yesterday I visited Craigieburn Forest Park on my first proper outing with the DJI Osmo Pocket 3. Filming/photography in a forest on a blue sky day is always super challenging ... was great to put it to the test in some harsh lighting conditions. All sequences here were first attempts and no post-processing has been applied. With a bit more practice, and in better light, I'm very much looking f...
8 hours up Mt Oxford and a visit to Ryde Falls
Просмотров 622Год назад
This loop walk around the Oxford Forest Conservation Area takes in some great sights, including expansive views over the Canterbury Plains and Lees Valley. A side visit to the picturesque Ryde Falls is a must do. There are a number of points of entry; this particular trip starts at the end of Mountain Road, near Coopers Creek. Thanks for watching! #walk #hike #newzealand
11-day landscape photography adventure around the South Island | New Zealand

I recently had the privilege of being invited by Josh Cripps (@JoshuaCrippsPhotography) to co-lead an 11-day landscape photography tour around my home, the South Island of New Zealand. This video provides just a little taste of the incredible scenery, amazing conditions, and great times we experienced over those 11 days. All clips captured over the period 27 October - 6 November 2023, principal...
Foggy Peak - a super fun day walk
Просмотров 460Год назад
Foggy Peak (1741m) is located in Korowai/Torlesse Tussocklands Park, New Zealand, and is most easily accessed from the top of Porters Pass on State Highway 73. It's a leg and lung buster to get up but should only take 90 minutes or so for those with reasonable fitness. Getting down is twice as fast, with lots of fun to be had running down the loose scree. Note that in winter this peak is usuall...

Some more ancient DV footage retrieved from the archives, this time from an overnight tramp in July 2004 to Cedar Flat Hut on the West Coast of the South Island. The hut is reached following a 4-5 hour walk up the Toaroha River valley, inland from Hokitika. Ten minutes beyond the hut, in Wren Creek, are several natural hot springs which vary in temperature according to the river flow at the tim...
Peak climb, STORM incoming
Просмотров 706Год назад
Woolshed Hill is a superb half-day (~4 hours return) walk in Arthur's Pass National Park. A total elevation gain of 850m gives access to some fantastic panoramic views into the Waimakariri and Hawdon Valleys and across to the Southern Alps. The track is well marked to the bush line and after that dwindles to a route, but following the ridgeline is reasonably straightforward. I made this trip ju...

Trig M: A stunning and easy day walk near Porters Pass
Просмотров 942Год назад
Trig M is a great little walk located in Korowai/Torlesse Tussocklands Park near Porters Pass. There's some hill climbing involved so reasonable fitness is required, but otherwise the route is straight-forward and should be within the abilities of most people. This video was shot in late winter so there was some snow about, but for most of the year, the area is snow free. #hiking #adventure #ne...
From the archives: A stunning 5-days on the Caples-Routeburn | New Zealand
Просмотров 568Год назад
On this 5-day hike we connected the Routeburn Track to the Caples Track to make an (almost) loop walk. By "almost" I mean the trailheads are 28 km apart (via road), but that's still far closer than the 315 km (via road) separation between the Routeburn Track trailheads. Plus the Caples makes a very worthwhile hike in its own right with some truly stunning scenery. We did this trip during the of...

3 days exploring the magnificent beauty of Nelson Lakes National Park
Wonderful scenery, great hike and adventure. Great photos.
Wonderful video Daniel of your trip. My wife and I will be joining you and Joshua in October and are looking forward to meeting you and exploring your beautiful country!
Oh that's fantastic you're heading here. Likewise look forward to meeting you and your wife, and showing you around a few of my favourite locations!
Cheers Daniel for show casing our amazing home, NZ can certainty compete as a world class photo destination. Kudos to you and appreciation to Photopills
Thanks very much for watching! We're very fortunate to have such diverse and grand landscapes on our doorstep :-)
Amazing video! So beautiful! And those mountains are so beautiful!
Yes the Southern Alps are amazing eh!
Thank you for making this video! The spots were gorgeous and I loved catching glimpses of Marco, Bruce, and Jessica. So very glad that I signed up for the 2025 expedition….June can’t come quick enough for the “Lazy Girl”!
That's so cool you're coming on the 2025 trip, look forward to meeting you!
Brilliant, thanks! Too many participants by the look of it 😮
thanks, no problem! Yeah it's a big group but it's not so bad when you've got a big bus (with dedicated driver), a couple of guides, and everyone knows what they're doing with their cameras.
Thank you for sharing this. I was here in 2012 from Hungary! :)
Thanks for watching :-)
Amazing video. Thanks for taking us along! "By nightfall these hills will be swarming with Orcs! We must reach the woods of Lothlórien. Come, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, get them up."
Thanks for watching, and love your quote!
“The walk in takes around 90 minutes but with all the scenic treats along the way it can take a lot longer” sums up travelling through the South Island. I did a trip there some years back where I kept stopping every few kilometres to take more photos. It takes a while to get to your destination when scenery is that stunning. That was a great video & brought back some good memories
Glad you enjoyed the vid! Agreed, the whole South Island is just so stunning, a new landscape around every corner.
Been following you for a long time on Insta. Great to see this. Congrats!!
Thanks for watching and following along, much appreciated! :-)
Being the sharp weather awareness man is a secret to traveling NZ. Being a prebooked tour, one can easily miss out on the best scenery in NZ. Being flexible and keep checking the weather forecast frequently is one of the secrets... and then being able to adjust the itinerary accordingly (Westcoast wet/Eastcoast dry and the other way around...). Kudos to accomplishing the feat
Thank you. It can be quite stressful at times, but yes flexibility and having plan Bs, Cs, and Ds is key. About the only location I don't get stressed about is Fiordland, as those landscapes are spectacular rain or shine.
Mate that is some Kms .....Even living in NZ (chc) I reckon I would struggle to get that done in 2 weeks....epic adventure though
is that a regular photo pilss trip Now......?
Haha yeah it was a mission and a half! And yip, there's another one happening this June, but with a few learnings and refinements from the 2024 trip. And an all new trip/itinerary coming soon after that.
Wheres the North Island pics? You only show the south island. Totally diff landscapes on north but just as good.
The lack of North Island pics is due to the lack of not going to the North Island on this particular trip 😄
Looks like it was an amazing trip mate!
Thanks Paul, certainly was an incredible trip - had such a great run of conditions!
awesome
thank you :-)
Thank you for capturing and sharing this beautiful country we call home so well Daniel. What a treat for all attendees!
Thanks so much Tascha, we're very fortunate to live here eh!
Looks like paradise. Great video!
Thank you ☺️
Wow this is such a beautiful part of NZ and you have captured it very well! thanks!
thanks very much :-)
Beautiful cinematography mate
thank you :-)
luv your work bro...very inspirational footage
Much appreciated, thanks for watching!
you got a LOT into this/ top work
unbelievably great vid, you’ve documented a part of our changing landscape brilliantly plus your edit is impressive. cheers
Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated :-)
I must look at my TA maps because I noticed you mentioned the track is not that far away so I must investigate if I can add it on and do Titiroa as a side trip.
Yip it's not too far away from the TA, would make a superb side quest!
Wow Daniel! Am watching this one right now. That scenery blows my mind. Just epic as was your first days hike in (following you explaining the timeframe between doing Mt Owen to starting this one). Can’t wait to see more so back to viewing. Going to move into the theatre rm to view this one so that I can do it justice. Thanks so much🙌🏼☺️💁🏼♀️
Thanks for taking us along for the journey. NZ is unbelievably beautiful, it really is like another world.
To save expensive bandwidth on my hotspot I usually watch YT on 360p. But for you I bump it up to 2160p (4k) to do it justice! (Only trap is to remember to drop it down again afterwards.)
Wow!
That ford over the Dart River has been repaired now and is far better.
That's awesome,. thanks for the update!
Did the Dusky in march 1988. From Lake Manapouri to Dusky Sound, Dusky Sound to Lake Hauroko, Lake Hauroko back to Lake Manapouri, so doubletracked all the way. Took me 12 days, including a hutday at Dusky-sound for fishing, and a hutday at Lake Roe for climbing Mount Tamatea. Tough hike, but I was in great shape then, and was lucky with the weather. Great to see your vid on youtube, brings back great memories ! Wish I could still do hikes like this, but I'm 73 now, and live in Holland, where we don't have this kind of stuff !
Sounds like an epic few days! I must get back down there and do it again.
Visited in 1989 90 via the Fyfe river. Camped among the marble on top, back the steep route. Fab but lethal in low viz. Fab video tx
thanks for watching :-)
As @smilesandlaughsalot said, absolutely superb. Tight editing and frozen ankles and feet win the day and evening photographs. Thanks to you I can enjoy our Aotearoa beauty from the warmth of my living room 😊💯🤙😍
Thanks for watching! Currently editing together an extended version with voiceover etc, hopefully release in the next few weeks.
JUST WOW :)
I’ve been to Lake Angelus many times. Loved your video.
thank you :-)
Do you have any tips for getting started on photography! I love your videos!
Lyell Lake - OMG!
Winter is way better than autumn in general
Hi, did you have any hassles camping there? Are we allowed to pitch a tent in that area or?.... do we just hope not to be moved on?. Would love to take my teenagers but would hate to plan a hike and end up in trouble lol
There are no restrictions on camping around there, although given how popular it now is, maybe that day is coming! There are a number of places to pitch a tent but good sites soon get in short supply when it's busy.
@DanielMurrayPhotography thank you so much for the reply, can't wait to get down there now. Great video , Thanks for the inspiration 🙏 😊
Hello! Your video remind meI was lived and hiked here, the trail name "Dusky track", because at that moment I was a beginner, so I couldn't finished it. But after the fail experience, I start to hike a lots when I leave NZ and back to my country. Your video really beautiful, remind me the most beautiful memory in NZ. May I ask which track you did in this video? It is so beautiful.... I'm thinking go back Milford national park and hike again this year, so I need more information and research more homework, thanks a lot. Greeting from Pei Han.
Thanks for the kind words. Not sure what else I can tell you that's not already in the video - check out the map at 1:46 for some key info about the location.
Ethereal!
Sure is, amazing place!
This is spectacular thank you for sharing🔥
Thanks for watching 🙏
Gorgeous! I’ve been there in person but was saying “Wow!” throughout the video. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, such a spectacular place eh!
Epic, Daniel. EPIC! And you've captured it so beautifully also. Very well done! Was that Aoraki I could see in the distance in some shots??
Thanks Jono! Not 100% sure which mountain you might be referring to, but Mt Tutoko is prominent in some of the shots looking northwards.
Stunning mate!
thank you :-)
I wanna Party with Daniel! You really get to the very special bits out there. Inspirational. We did Owen and Brewster after seeing your videos. Please don't stop.
Cheers, nice to hear when people are inspired enough by the vids to get out and do it themselves ... thanks for following along!
Love that place. Both times I been there the weather was "too nice" lol. Definitely need to see it with the rain someday.
Yip definitely head back with a bad weather forecast, it's something else altogether when it rains!
One extra tip as someone who has been to Milford Sound on a few tours: you need to either drive yourself or spend the night at the port so you can be there to see the sunset. The tours take you in and out as quickly as possible because so much of the "day trip" is the long drive to get there. So despite living in that area for years, I never got to see sunset in Milford Sound! I also didn't have a youtube channel for scenic sunsets at the time, but this is a bucket list sunset location for sure! Thanks for the inspiration.
That's a great tip. It's definitely a long drive back out to Te Anau if you hang around for sunset. I've been fortunate enough to stay in Milford for most of my trips - in the busy season booking ahead is a necessity; winter visits are much easier in that respect.
Oh my god, what a magical place !!! Thank you very much for sharing mate.
Yeah, truly magical - not too many other places like it eh!
What a breathtaking views! I really don't know what else I could say. Amazing.
It's a very special place, thanks for watching!
@@DanielMurrayPhotography Thanks for sharing! I wish New Zealand would be a little closer to the Europe.
Stunning visuals as always. It is one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Thanks so much!
Stunning shots! I prefer visiting Milford Sound in the rain ⚡️
Thanks heaps. I'm with you on that, the rain gives you a much greater appreciation for the elements that have shaped the landscape.
